Quest: Cannonball - Issue 12

The large pavilion had been collapsed by Windblown and DarkStar. They and the Cultist of Stellar Propitiation are trapped underneath. Four Cultists were incapacitated from the falling pavilion.

Earlier Agent America had escaped his bonds, grabbed Mystic, throwing her with a Judo throw known as the Tomoe nage.  Mystic flew into the circle of Cultist, knocking one of them out.  Mystic was prone but conscious on the ground.

Adamas grasped his amulet in hand and thought toward his teammates, "Can anyone warn those agents off?  I don't want to see anyone die today." At the same time, he swooped down by the shoreline of the island, scanning for a boat he can use as a projectile, finding one of sufficient size; he grabbed it, and sped toward the Devourer.  He flew at top speed and released the boat just before impact on the side opposite the Valkyries.

KRAWWKKK!

The Star-Devourer stopped its progress toward the bridge and turned to find its attacker.

The Ceremony of Control had been thrown into chaos.  Disguised as one of the cultists, Agent America leapt on top of the tent and start beating anything that moved, through the canvas; mercilessly.

The merry ferocity of his attacks reminded Agent America of something he once dreamed about but no longer remembered. It was probably nothing.

Five forms no longer moved under the canvas.

"Maybe we should have done this from OUTside," Windblown grumbled as he extricated himself from the collapsed pavilion.  He took to the air, looking to see if anyone escaped.

As the pavilion roof had started to fall, the Cerulean Commander pulled out an empty rucksack and calmly moved to the display of Mystic Orbs. Hmm, what do you know, it worked like a charm . . . that can’t be good news. “Windblown, I’d say quit your grumbling, but that seems to be a wizard's thing I guess.  Can you round up some of these geriatrics as they try to escape? Maybe AA or Doc can use one to get a lead on our next arcane object, or better yet get a clue to who is manipulating these bastards.”

Maintaining a cool combat awareness of his surroundings, as the coven of cultist started to panic, Rose secured the offending orbs in his backpack. Focusing his thoughts through the amulet on his chest “Hey Doc! We’ve scattered the cultist and I’m collecting the orbs now. What’s the next step for putting that Star Demon back in his hole? I own real estate around here and he’s going to kill property values if he gets loose.”

There was no response from Dr. Arcane.  Checking the Amulet, it didn’t look broken but it didn’t feel the same either.

Opening a channel on the comm-link “Adamas, how’s it going buddy? I should be able to give you a hand in just a minute”

SSSKRRRKKSSK (static noise, sounds like a radio when it can't get pickup a radio signal clearly)

“Cybil give me a real-time holo-image of the battlefield on the heads-up-display please.”

No response, performing a quick diagnostics showed there isn’t a connection because Electronic Counter Measures are flooding the area.

[GM Note:  It is military grade quality; it will take 6 actions for DarkStar to bypass the ECM through electronic means.]
Watching from above Windblown summoned a wind to help lift the canvas from Commander Rose.  Windblown saw that none of the cultists are trying to escape.

Not only does the wind free Commander Rose but several of the cultists and the Orbs.  They helped each other up.  There were 8 of them.  The Orbs had a silver glow around them.  Windblown can still see the silver glow even when they were in DarkStar’s rucksack.

Mystic is focus on something in her hand.  There is a transparent box around it.  The transparent box has a bronze glow to it.

[GM Note: Windblown failed Detect Hidden roll to try to determine what was in Mystic’s hand]

A raven is flying up toward Windblown. It is not acting like a frighten bird but as a predator.  It strikes at Windblown with its claws.   The raven’s claws ripped his hood but missed Windblown’s face.

Having had his information gathering resources blinded, both electronically and mystically, the titan of transport decided to switch to a different approach. "Cybil, please remind me to upgrade your ECCM programs when this is over."

***I would appreciate that very much Joshua. I find this 'fog' very disturbing***

The last of the Orbs having been secured in the rucksack, the steely blue hero braced himself. "Time to go Cybil"

WHOUMP

A few hundred few above the Festival and the Star-Devourer; DarkStar appeared. "Cybil, would you please triangulate the source of the ECM interference using the data recorded from our previous and current locations, thank you" Although it doesn't feel quite right, I'm assuming CHESS is the source of the interference, but I'll need a full 15 seconds to accelerate to terminal velocity and who has that kind to waste the time doing nothing?

***Joshua, the source of the ECM interference is MEDUSA***

At the center of the collapsed Pavilion, Mystic recovered her Rod of Power. Calling to her people, she yelled, “Form up! Focus your minds.  We need to retake the Orbs before they are hidden from the light!” Raising the Rod of Power, Mystic aimed at Windblown.  A reddish green aura surrounded the end of it.

KER-ZING!

The aura flashed from the Rod toward Windblown.  It sailed by Windblown to his left.

Adamas began to circle the beast blasting it with his power vision.

ZZWWT!!
ZZWWT!!
ZZWWT!!

All three blasted the Star-Devourer guaranteeing its attention was on Adamas and not the bridge.

The CHESS Knights and Valkyries held their position.  Only one-third of the Knights were providing protective watch over the bridge. The remaining Knights are busy freeing people for crashed cars and carrying them off the bridge.

All of the Valkyries were rescuing people from the water and trapped in boats. Festival attendees ran to the shore line of the Island.  The Valkyries started ferrying them across after the rescues were completed.  Megalopolis First Responders provided medical attention and transportation to emergency relief centers.

The 8 Cultist of Stellar Propitiation started to move together.  They moved into groups of three, holding hands.  Agent America remembered the Cultists did a something similar in the Museum security footage.  As he ran toward them, he focused his mind on his investigation.

Watching the security footage, the Superspy is shocked. What he sees is unexpected.  Several men walk into the museum wearing business suits.  They strategically place themselves throughout the building.  Then in groups of three they grasp hands and look at the other people.  The people faint as a trio looks at them.  Very quickly everyone except the men in suits is on the floor.  Looking closely, the America Agent realizes the victims are asleep. [Issue 8 ~ed.]

One set of 3 Cultist turned to face Windblown.  The second set faced Adamas. The third set had only 2 Cultists.  They signaled for Agent America to join them.  Realizing the chaos had reestablished the effectiveness of his disguise, the Superspy signaled he was on his way.

The second set was between the Cultist in disguise and the third set.  As he ran by them he carefully averted his eyes.  He watched their feet instead.  Measuring the distance down to the millimeter the Man from MEDUSA prepared his attack.

HI-YAH!!!

Agent America launched himself into a spin kick.  With expert precision, his foot struck each of the second set of Cultists on their jaws.  THUD!! THUD!! THUD!! All dropped to the ground. Landing on his striking foot, Agent America pivots toward the two Cultists.  Simultaneously: POW! His knee struck the Cultist firmly in the torso. BAM! His fist smashed the nose of the other Cultist.  The first Cultist flew back 10 feet. THUD! The second Cultist crumpled to the ground. Both are incapacitated.

The remaining 3 Cultists had their backs turned so they did not see the others fall.  They focused their gaze upon Windblown.  Windblown felt their gaze upon him.  His heart started racing.  He perspired. He felt tired and sleepy. Windblown focused his mind.  He steeled his will.  To his surprise he felt the presence on 3 minds.  He heard them telling him he was exhausted.  Flying was difficult. He didn’t have the energy to continue.  He should sleep. Windblown closed his eyes.

NO!!!!!

With the full strength of his will Windblown forced the foreign minds away from his.  His energy returned.  He wasn’t physically tired he was being mentally convinced he was.

Suddenly, his breathing became labored.  He couldn’t fill his lungs with oxygen. Before panic could set in Windblown focused his mind once again.  He steadied his breathing and relaxed his body.  Fortunately, his flight comes from the wind lifting him; not from force leaving his body.  The stress didn’t alter his flight position.

[GM Note: The successful Willpower defense use to defend against the Cultists’ mind control attack activated Windblown’s weakness. This was because there attack while mental had the same effect as Devitalization Ray.  A roll of 1 was made for his Endurance Save, so he has no adverse effects for his next action]

Windblown heard Mystic command Blackwing to attack him. Windblown reacted first. He blasted the raven with a gale force. The wind blasé knocked the bird across the Island and into the water.  KER-SPLASH!

With the transparent box with a bronze glow in one hand, Mystic aimed her other hand that was holding her Rod of Power at the Cultist who had attacked her other followers.  A silvery blue aura formed at the end of the Rod.  KER-ZAP! The aura released a magical bolt which struck Agent America.  The Agent in disguise felt his body changing. His hand started to become transparent.  He felt like he was disappearing.  He was losing substance. He fought back.  He willed his body not to change.  He focused on being solid.  He was a man of iron and grit. He controlled his mind, body, and soul.  No one was going to change him.  No one was going to transform him into a ghost.  He willed the magic to leave and it did.

Above all the Festival, something large was falling and it was falling fast.

ZOOOM!!
WHOUMP

WHOUMP
WHOOOSH!

Downward flew the Cobalt Man Mountain toward the Star-Devourer. DarkStar used his teleportation to align himself on to a collision course with the World Devouring threat. The man of Stellar Armor raised his fists, activating his electrical powers.  Lightning danced across his knuckles.

Adamas saw his partner diving toward the Dhole.  He moved out of the way of DarkStar.  He is confused to see a rucksack strapped to DarkStar body.   There was a silver glow emanating from the rucksack.  He wondered what surprise the earth genius had planned with the rucksack.

Fully stretching his body into a power dive, DarkStar’s double fisted electrical strike attack zoomed toward its target.

!!!!KA-BLAM!!!!!

DarkStar slammed into the Star-Devourer.  The alien beast’s body shuddered as lightning arc across its body.

[GM Note: PR=28 used to deliver the two fisted attack with electrical carrier attack.  This is a move through attack. DarkStar takes 38 damage which is half the damage delivered to the Star-Devourer. Armor is now ADR 67.]

The Star-Devourer curled up; squeezing DarkStar in its folds.

[GM Note: The crushing embrace does 46 points of damage: -31 to Armor, now has ADR 36 and -15 to Hit Points, can’t roll because of crushing squeeze. Since all of DarkStar’s body is being squeeze his ADR of 67 routed 67% of the 46 points to Armor and the remaining 33% went against Hit Points]

At the edge of the Festival a lone figure stood watching DarkStar.  She was focused on the silver glow emanating from his rucksack.

"Maybe we should have done this from OUTside," Windblown grumbles as he attempts to extricate himself from the collapsed pavilion. If he is successful, he takes back to the air, looking to see if anyone escaped.

<If he sees any escapees> He throws a blast of wind to knock them off their feet.

<If he sees no one> He summons a wind to help lift the canvas from Commander Rose.

[OOC] Hey now! You had movement to spare. You could have gone outside if you wanted. Okay I didn't expect a huge tent to fall that fast, but it didn't matter because I planned on DarkStar snatching the Orbs with his next Action. So he was stuck inside anyway. Oh and appreciate the thought but unless Doc advises otherwise I'll be teleporting out after snatching the mystic baubles. Someone needs to keep that Mystic busy. I think she could still be trouble.

PS: Dude nice quick response, good to have you back in the game(s)
--------------------------------------------------------
[OOC]
Why do I have the sneaky suspicion Rose’s call into Kevin has resulted in the Adamas’s plan to lure the Dhole off the bridge to be thwarted, and the death of one CHESS Knight? What? Not one of those clowns from the Super Force could make it? (Dude I just revisited Super Force – When did you add Meganaut and Technomancer? I think he might be boyfriend material for Cybil)

[OOC]
The response below is predicated on Commander Rose having been in close proximity to the Orbs when he tore down the main support structure. It would make sense both were located in the approximate center of the tent.

[First Action] Will be to secure the Orbs, using the chaos created by the collapsing pavilion as cover.

<DarkStar IC:> As the pavilion roof starts to fall, the Cerulean Commander pulls out an empty rucksack and calmly moves to the display of Mystic Orbs.

Maintaining a cool combat awareness of his surroundings, as the coven of cultist start to panic, Rose starts to secure the offending orbs in his backpack. Focusing his thoughts through the amulet on his chest “Hey Doc! We’ve scattered the cultist and I’m collecting the orbs now. What’s the next step for putting that Star Demon back in his hole? I own real-estate around here and he’s going to kill property values if he gets loose.” Opening a channel on the comm-link “Adamas, how’s it going buddy? I should be able to give you a hand in just a minute”

“Cybil give me a real-time holo-image of the battlefield on the heads-up-display please.”

[Goal:] is to secure the Orbs and collect comprehensive information from Dr. Arcane, Adamas, and Cybil of the battlefield Sit-Rep and set the next Mission Objective accordingly. I'm hoping AA keeps the thing with Mystic handled. He's our best bet to keeping her controlled.

I will determine DarkStar’s 2nd Action after getting responses from Arcane, Adamas, and Cybil. It of course might also be affected by the appearance of Street urchins – who knows. (Suddenly I see the appeal of 3.0’s one action per turn to a PBeM GM)

Hit me baby – apparently I’m in the mood to channel Wolverines combat style.

You can still communicate verbally with AA and Windblown.  AA can communicate with DarkStar, Windblown, and Adamas.  Windblown will be able to communicate with Adamas when he leaves the pavilion.

How is that for my best shot?

IC: Adamas grasps his amulet in hand and thinks toward his team mates, "Can anyone warn those agents off?  I don't want to see anyone die today." At the same time, he swoops down by the shoreline of the island, scanning for a boat he can use as a projectile, when he finds one of sufficient size, he'll grab it, and speed toward the Devourer.  He'll fly at top speed and release the boat just before impact on the side opposite the Valkyries.

He'll then begin to circle the beast blasting with his power vision, saving one attack for evasion, but trying to gain it's attention and keep it away from the bridge.

DarkStar

Dude really? (It's friday, I'm channeling my surfer persona - cali not silver)

I just want to check and make sure it's a storyline and not a continuity issue.

When we initially teleported into the pavilion, DarkStar was able to communicate with Dr. Arcane through the amulet. Now he can't? The ECM I can buy, even if I'm not exactly sure what brought it on. The amulet thing I thought was worth double checking since it had worked before, and it didn't appear anything had gone in the bad guys favor.

"All will be revealed by the mighty Kreskin"

On the other hand if he can't collect information, I guess its a perfect excuse to switch to the Wolverine combat mode I referenced earlier.

Thanks for the info - I'm 99% sure of the answer but had to ask

GM reply

You are correct that something did happen but DarkStar failed his detect hidden roll to know what it was.

Since there isn't a map to check, I will let you know that while Hill's Angels were very effective last turn. None of your opponents were KO last turn and even were able to take their action.

Tom
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
DarkStar

(Hallowed) Hills Angels?

You are one warped demon-puppy my friend. Sometimes if you ask the right questions (i.e. role-play) those detect rolls become less damaging when missed. Even a hayseed can put two and two together and get four sometimes. You stated the cultist were in a panic which fit Doc's criteria for breaking the ritual, but obviously something’s up. I'm sure AA and WB can handle it. Thanks for the clarification.

DarkStar will go with what he thinks he knows - that the cultist threat has been neutralized for the moment.

I'll post his complete and revised 1st Action a bit later this morning. His 2nd Action could be very dependent on his teammates reaction to his current plan of action for the next Turn

(Oh going with clarifications - "in campaign" - you've allowed DarkStar to teleport  each time he's had an Action available to him and I wanted to know - is that legal? - I assumed so because unlike other movement, it cost PR, and will be a moot point come 3.0 - but would still like to utilize that ability while/if it's available)

Thanks Again
John
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
DarkStar

How is that for my best shot?
Tom

lmao   Okay, fine. if that's how we're gonna roll, I can roll that way.

***Seriously though guys. As far as DS knows the cultist are just normal (read level 0) guys who read one too many Lovecraft novels growing up. Without info from Doc, he has to assume the ritual is ruined (as per Doc's instructions) and the big threats are Mystic and the Dhole. So he's going to switch gears.***

AA and WB should be able to handle a girl i a bad bikini and some old geezers right?

<DarkStar IC:> Having had his information gathering resources blinded, both electronically and mystically, The titan of transport decides to switch to a different approach. "Cybil, please remind me to upgrade your ECCM programs when this is over." ***I would appreciate that very much Joshua. *Whoump*

[OOC] It takes approximately 15 seconds for an object to reach terminal velocity. When done so in a power dive formation one can attain a velocity of approx 200 mph, or 880 inches per turn on the Projectile velocity chart.

<DarkStar: Action/Goal> will hold his second action while in a power dive, and try to regain mystic and electronic contact with his companions. If possible he will inform them of the action he has initiated. If not they'll figure it out when they hear the loud noise by the bridge - at the beginning of next Turn.

The "plan" is to assault the Dhole with as mighty an impact as possible, using his strength (2d8), velocity (+3d10) and his electrical carrier attack (+2d8) plus damage modifiers, into the monster with a multi-strike from both fist. (so potentially <4d8 + 3d10 + 6> x2 ergo <8d8 + 6d10 + 12>  )  Tom I think that's 10 PR if I added it up right. Oh and add 6 PR to that because I'm sure he'll have to adjust his assault with a second teleport also.

So he'll be down a total of 22-28 PR (holy crap) by end of his 1st action next turn - assuming no one talks him into a better plan of action during the power dive. Clocks ticking

Wolvie would do it - if he could teleport

GM reply

In V&V 2.1 Teleportation (non portal type) require movement only, no action.  So performing the teleportation is a part of the Character's movement for the phase.  It does have a power cost.

What we have been doing is perfectly legal.

DarkStar

Thanks Tom

I find it a bit confusing but if multiple teleports each turn are good for you then that’s good for me too. I think I got dizzy with all the teleporting and being teleported at the Dragon Temple.

Actually Im a bit at a loss for what’s really going on at the pavilion so if any of my teammates can suggest a better action I'll gladly use a teleport to abort the power dive and do something useful. Aiding Adamas was only thing I could think to do after panicking the Cultist and collecting the Orbs. I suppose destroy them or something but hell a trip to the sun is a bit out of our way right now. I miss my quick and easy reference guide to the arcane

***Was curious if how well you thought I was staying in character, with two of them "on scene"? It was awfully tough to not just have Archer's curiosity get the best of him. DS on the other hand is so (over)developed his actions tend to just flow more naturally. He hasn’t had a chance to really cut loose yet - and I’m not going to count the Star Devourer. Might as well be fighting an earthquake.

Hey I suppose the ACLU would start bitchin if we installed some Lo-Jack implants in bad guys like Bull and Mocker?

To make sure, this is a total replacement of the previous turn submission, So DarkStar is not spending an action gathering the Orbs up?

Working with the understanding that this is the complete turn submission. Here are my responses:

While DarkStar leaves the effected ECM area, the rest of the team doesn't.
DarkStar changing locations has no impact of the amulet. It still feels the same.
So communications are not restored for DarkStar.

You will get a multi-attack effect but that doesn't double velocity damage. So only 3d10.
You left out the mass impact from  DarkStar's size so an additional 1d8 needs to be added.

The damage roll will be:
9d8 + 3d10 + 12

Since you are using falling to gain the velocity, the attack will take the entire turn.  So your second action will be for course correction.  I will give you a bonus +8 to hit for having it.  So PR for turn will be 28.

DarkStar will hit on Phase 1 instead on at end of turn, since it is movement through falling instead of uncontrolled falling.

I forgot that while DarkStar is building velocity he will be able to communicate with Cybil.  ECM is interfering with her sensors so she still can't provide the battle map and combat conditions that were requested.

But she can link into local news feeds, so he would know about the river flooding the lower section of the festival and the fire started by the CHESS Skycycle.

Final Clarification on the Attack.  It will be a Move-Through attack per my house rule (see rule section of Megalopolis website).

DarkStar

Hey Tom

Sorry for the confusion. I should have started from scratch to make if cohesive. Thanks for noticing the "securing of the Orbs". That's the only thing of actual importance DS is doing this turn. Oh and it only takes a few hundred feet to build up to terminal velocity so he may actually still be within the ECM (?) Either way, I'm fairly certain I didn't have him soliloquy after teleporting out of the tent. But since you brought it up :)  I will ask if . . .

<DarkStar: IC> "Cybil, would you please triangulate the source of the ECM interference using the data recorded from our previous and current locations, thank you"  Although it doesn't feel quite right, I'm assuming CHESS is the source of the interference, but I'll need a full 15 seconds to accelerate to terminal velocity and who has that kind to waste the time doing nothing?

. . . is okay to add to my Responses?

I will indeed look up your "Move Through" house rules. I was envisioning a power dive culminating in a double fist strike at the end, so I thought each fist in the multi-strike would benefit from the velocity bonus. Could only pull a maneuver off on an immobile target, or one big as a football field. Given the base hits for something this big (assuming the Size Change rule was used in creation) it's ultimately a futile gesture.

Amusingly enough while I decided it was what DS would do til comms were back on line and Mission Objectives re-prioritized, it just occurred to me it'll be the first actual public display of his power. Hope it plays well on TV or I'll never hear the end of it from Mr. Bird.

Good to hear I can still communicate with Cybil. Belatedly I thought you might have the ECM interfere. Losing comms with Cybil would suck. Ever read Speaker for the Dead? Remember when Ender shut Jane off for an afternoon - oh baby I am not doing that to Cybil.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
GM Reply

Adding to your responses it perfectly fine.

On the acceleration, it is DarkStar’s entire mass that has the velocity otherwise you state your striking with your elbows and knees at the same time and should get 4 X 3d10.  So I had to decide what is reasonable because both DarkStar and Adamas loves to do move through attacks.  I had a hard time justifying that if you fly through someone with 1 fist instead of 2 fist that the speed bonus to damage is 1/2.

So my decision is really based on game mechanics not on practical physics applications.

Tom
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
DarkStar

Hey sounds good to me buddy. 9 times out of 10 I'm just looking for the special effect. If I goof on how the game mechanics I'm good - unless it creates a risk to the character or others that would be deemed unacceptable (i.e. out of character)

So unless someone can talk DS out of the present action - and apparently Adamas would be the only one capable of such a feat given the situation, this seems to be his course of action this Issue.

***************************************************************************************************************************

Think I might go fiddle with one of the Side Shots Semi-Annual chapters I'm working on.  I'm waiting to finish Part Two for Jon - I asked to use Adamas and he wanted to RP it so even though he said go ahead I'm hoping he'd free before or next Downtime. Agent America saw Adamas effortlessly hurl other people's pleasure craft at Godzilla. He was glad he hadn't parked his car nearby.

The patriot for hire leapt atop the canvas expanse and began striking and kicking at any moving lumps in the area where Mystic and her moaning cultists had been (and where Rose and Windblown hadn't ).
It was fun work if you could get it.

If Mystic popped out of the tent, he'd ignore her and keep going. The cultists were the priority targets.

Quick Clarification: With AA's agility, he can attack two cultists per turn if he doesn't do multiple attacks.  Is that what you are wanting to do?  Since it is one attack per Cultist, the Standard Rules for Multiple Attacks from V&V 2.1 will apply.

Tom
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Agent America

OOC: Thanks Tom.

How's this.
Action 1:
Movement across tent to moving lumps.
Multiple attacks on lumps. Since they can't see AA and are partially immobilized, AA will make as many multiple attacks as he can. He does know martial arts.
He won't strike the same lump twice.

Then for Action 2, he'll move to the other side of the moving lumps to get some new targets (who aren't other 'Hills Angels) and do it all over again. Max multiple attacks. Don't hit same target twice.

He's thorough with this kind of stuff.

Best,
