Notes:
Background: James was formerly a private investigator subcontracted by Megalopolis law enforcement to investigate crimes and criminals that required techniques that sometimes went counter to standard procedure. That was until his transformation after which he had to leave that profession as he could no longer blend in with the common man. An avid athlete who enjoyed numerous activities not the least of which was weightlifting he was in excellent shape. He enjoyed hiking in the wilderness as it allowed him to get away from the chaos of city life.

On vacation in China he was able to learn of a series of caves in the mountains that people explored and being curious set out with a loaded pack to visit these caves. James spent several days exploring the caves, reveling in the natural beauty and overall silence from things manmade. On what was to be his last day as a normal human he was deep in one cave and noticed a small opening set above the cave floor. He was able to climb his way to the opening. Crouching down he pulled himself into the opening which was a short tunnel that opened into a cave that had obviously been worked by human hands. The walls and ceiling were ornately carved with dragons and clouds and Chinese characters were everywhere. The cave seemed to be lit by a glow coming from a raised platform that had something upon it.

Approaching cautiously James saw that the glow was coming from what looked like a large emerald in the rough shape of a heart. Spellbound by its beauty he picked up the emerald and was astonished to find that he felt it pulse in his hands ever so slightly, beating like an actual heart. Around where the stone was sitting were more Chinese characters and he was surprised that once he was holding the stone he was able to read and understand what was written. Carved into the stone was the following message: "From time unrecorded darkness has always plagued mankind, infecting man's soul and turning him against his brethren. From time to time this darkness waxes and spreads its influence more widely and during these times mankind needs a guardian and guidance, to show the path of strength and righteousness.

Millennia ago the dragons were the guardians but as time passed people began to turn against them, not wishing to have their destinies controlled. One brave dragon volunteered to give up its heart and life and the other dragons transferred some of their essence into this heart. The last dragon approached a group of Shaolin monks who still followed the enlightened path and gave them the heart, bidding them create a hiding place for it until destiny guides a worthy soul to it. The dragon bade the monks to carve these words and one last message: Whosoever takes up this heart and places it to their chest will be granted the might of the old dragons, to guide mankind and protect them from the darkness. Be warned that once the decision is made there is no turning back and daunting will be the task before you."

Initially James smirked at the mumbo-jumbo but then thought about what was written and what power must be in the stone that it could grant him the ability to read the message. He had always felt like there was more he needed to be doing. That all the sneaking around, despite how it paid the bills, never quite felt fulfilling to him. On a whim he unbuttoned his shirt and held the pulsing green emerald to his chest, not really expecting anything to happen. To his astonishment the stone flared with bright light and he felt it melding with his body, moving to where his heart currently laid beating. The pain was agonizing, mind-numbing, and he fell to the stone floor screaming. He felt as if his flesh, bones, and muscles were being torn apart piece by piece and passed out from the agony.

An indeterminate amount of time later James faded back to consciousness, opening his eyes to take in the cave. He was astonished to find that he could feel the slightest breeze and scents he was not previously aware of flooding into his mind. Even his eyesight seemed sharper somehow. Looking down at himself to check his body before he stood his eyes went wide as all of his previously normal skin was now covered in deep green scales, like a lizard but larger and thicker. Standing up his mind was immediately brought to his back, to the wings that had sprouted from it, and he instinctively knew how to move them and how he would work them to fly. Folding them with barely a thought he looked at the opening he had crawled through and knew there was no way he could get through there as it was. He walked over to the opening, reveling in the obvious strength flowing through his muscles and on a whim threw a punch at the wall, fully expecting there to be no effect other than pain. He was astonished that the blow caused him no harm at all and actually knocked out some stone. James bent to the task of widening the opening so he could get through, punching over and over again, and eventually widened the tunnel enough to squeeze through.

Emerging into the main cave he was easily able to follow the scents of fresh air back to the surface and stretched his wings to allow the sun to play over his skin. Knowing full well that his career as a PI was over and that there was no way he was going to be able to fit on a plane he knew he had a long trip ahead of him to return to Megalopolis. James hoped that when he got there he would be able to put his new talents to use to defend the common man and the greater good that he could fall in with one of the various superhero groups in the city.
