Phantom: Exit Strategy - Issue 10

The gang-land scourge checked the remaining 2nd floor rooms and the roof. He did not encounter anyone else. He did find stolen goods, drugs, and weapons.

In the distance he heard the approach of police car sirens. It is time to execute his exit strategy.

Making his way back down the stairs and onto the first floor, Phantom headed toward the rear of the building. The merciless man-hunter then stopped right before the main corridor on the first floor, and turns into the room that the gang members were using for a bar area. He stands silently for a moment inside the doorway to the room, and takes a hard look at the interior. As he raised his P90 to his shoulder, he jerked back on the weapon’s trigger and sprayed down the liquor bottles behind the bar with the remaining ammunition in his weapon’s magazine.

The chime of glass bottles shattering can be heard between the bursts of assault weapon fire half way down the dark city block. As the last round exits the barrel of Phantom’s weapon, one last liquor bottle tumbles off the bars back shelf and lands helplessly on the floor below. Lowering his weapon he reached for one of the pockets on his vest and pulled out the Zippo lighter his wife had given him so many years prior. He paused for a second as he wiped his thumb over the front of the highly polished stainless steel exterior of the lighter, and then quietly read off the inscription to himself, ”To my loving husband . . . Semper Fidelis.” Closing his eyes he tried desperately to remember the smell of his wife’s favorite perfume and the beauty that seemed to dance within the joyful innocence of her smile.

Unfortunately for Phantom, his little trip down ‘Memory Lane’ was cut short by the sound of police car sirens drawing nearer to his location; “It’s time to go . . .”, he thought to himself. Grabbing a nearby stack of bar napkins, he snapped back the cover of his lighter and set the napkins on fire. As the bar napkins go up in flames he tossed the flaming heap of fiery paper behind the bar and waits a second to make sure that the contents of the liquor bottles have been set ablaze.

Confidant that this would be the last time any gang would set foot in this building, Phantom slapped another magazine into his P90 and made his way to the back door of the house. After he made sure that there are no surprises waiting for him outside, he opened the back door and slipped quietly into the night.

An unmarked police car is the first on the scene.  It drove up onto the grass and slid to a stop in front of the door. A detective jumped out of his car.  He was wearing a team jacket featuring the Megalopolis Monarchs logo on it, blue jeans, and tan shoes.  He ran into the burning house.  He carried out one of the inhabitants by the time the Fire Department arrived as well as two police squad cars.

As a back window blow out from the heat, flame could be seen exiting the walls of the second floor of the building.  The Fire Department focused on the first floor as they rescued more of the people inside.  The EMTs examined the victims’ wounds.

An officer brought the upstairs client to the Detective.  All three conversed together.  The Officer and Detective appeared to argue briefly then stepped away.  The Detective continued to interview the man.

The Firemen were running out of the house. Ordering everyone to back away from the building quickly.  Before a parameter is established the roof and second floor collapsed.  The crash of wood, plaster, tar, and metal smothered the first floor fire.  The house fire was put out.

As the EMTs were checking the last Fireman out for make sure his injuries were minor, a dark blue half ton pickup drove up.  It screeched to a halt in the middle of the street.  Out stepped a man wearing mirror sunglasses, a white Stetson cowboy hat, boots and two six shooters strapped on western gun holsters.

All the neighbors that were watching the fire quickly left.  They went into their houses locking their doors behind them. The Detective followed by the two police officers walked over to meet with the man. The two men start shouting and cussing at each other.

Does Phantom move to hear conversation?
Return to his home?
Street Patrol?

Unfortunately for Phantom, his little trip down ‘Memory Lane’ is cut short by the sound of police car sirens drawing nearer to his location; “Its time to go . . .”, he thinks to himself. Grabbing a nearby stack of bar napkins ( OOC: or anything else that might be flammable – a roll of paper towels, a bar rag, etc. . . ), he snaps back the cover of his lighter and sets the napkins on fire. As the bar napkins go up in flames he tosses the flaming heap of fiery paper behind the bar and waits a second to make sure that the contents of the liquor bottles have been set ablaze.

> PHANTOM’S GOAL(S) <

At this point Phantom has done what he set out to do and now its time to leave. He’s hope his exit from the area will nice and quiet with no snags or bumps.

> PHANTOM’S OOC RESPONSE <

I’m assuming that the weapons he discovered on the second floor were of no interest to Phantom ( i.e. old revolvers and such ) – is that correct? If they did appear to be quality weapons, Phantom would make sure to take ‘a few samples’ ;)

Also – I’m assuming that were not making Phantom actually go out and buy ammunition and stuff – if that’s not true then he’ll grab whatever cash he can find laying out in the house; as he is leaving, and ‘pocket it’ to fund his future urban safari’s =)

------

Awesome issue as always, Tom! I didn’t expect the cops to show up that quickly – Phantom might have to look into that in the near future – might be ‘bad cops’ out there ;)

I apologies again for getting this in as late as it is – real life can be entirely too demanding at times.

Talk to you all soon,
