Notes:

"Jonathan Winthrope III; heir to the Winthrope family fortune, grew up on a grand estate that was nestled snuggly along the posh south side of Soiree Heights. For the first few years of his life, John lived a perfectly happy and normal life just like all the other children in his quiet upscale neighborhood. Unfortunately for him these first few years of his life would be the last time anyone would ever be able to describe his life as ‘perfectly happy and normal’.

As he grew into adolescence; to the great surprise of both of his parent, John began to demonstrate a strong interest in education and showed signs of having a natural aptitude for science. Wanting only the best for their child, John’s parents saw to it that he was enrolled in only the finest private schools available. Taking full advantage of the educational opportunities placed before him, John developed into an excellent student and even gained honors for his outstanding grades in science. When it came time for him to apply to college he knew there was only one place he wanted to go to. Between his family’s name, his grades, and his father’s influence, John had no trouble getting accepted into Megalopolis’s most prestigious university, The Winthrope Academic Academy. Known for its academic excellence, selectivity in admissions, and social elitism; The Winthrope Academic Academy gave John his first real taste of higher education. As a science major; specializing in molecular genetics and cellular biology, John felt honored to walk the same halls that his father and his grandfather did before him. It was during his first semester at college that he received the news that would change his life forever; his mother had been shot.

The details surrounding the death of Mrs. Winthrope spread throughout the cities news agencies like wildfire. It was during an apparent failed robbery attempt that Mrs. Winthrope had fallen victim to a point blank gunshot wound. Although she received the best medical possible, Claire Winthrope was pronounced dead within hours of arriving at the hospital. The moment he received word of his mother’s death, Jonathan Winthrope’s life changed forever. In the weeks and months that followed his mother’s funeral, John’s grades at school began to gradually slip. His study time was slowly being replaced by some of the seedier ‘extracurricular activities’ found on campus, such as all-night ‘keggers’ and toga parties. As time went on, John began to find himself enjoying his new friends more than he did his academic and family responsibilities. Activities such as studying for tests, and attending family dinners and functions were quickly replaced by wild college parties and drunken sorority girls. It was also during this same time period that his latent mutant abilities first began to manifest themselves. By the end of John’s second semester at college his declining grades and reckless party-animal lifestyle had him at the doorstep of being expelled. News of son’s possible expulsion from school forced John’s father to take drastic measures in order to ensure that his son would return to ‘the right path’. When he discovered that he had been cut off from his family’s money and that his father wasn’t returning his phone calls; John arraigned a meeting with his father through his father’s secretary. He had decided that he would not only ask his father’s forgiveness for his recent behavior, but that he would also tell him about his recently discovered meta-human abilities.

As the limousine made its way through the front gates of his family’s estate that evening, John couldn’t help but stare at the well lit grounds. He remembered his childhood, playing with his mother and father on the great front lawn, jumping into piles of leaves, and all the simple laughter one would normally associate with a happy family. Exiting the car he found himself standing before the large oak doors that marked the entrance to his family’s home. He stood there silently for a moment trying to remember the last time he had entered them; the night of his mother’s murder. The grounds were different that night, emergency vehicles littered the main driveway, policemen moved about among the swirling red and blue lights, and crime scene tape draped over everything like giant yellow cobwebs. The doors opened slowly and he was snapped out of his trance by the sudden appearance of one of the household staff members. Walking through the doorway, John could hear every footstep he took echoing through the grand marble foyer, the sound was deafening. The house seemed empty and soulless, devoid of the normal glow and warmth that his mother had always brought to it. His family’s home seemed less like a home and more like a mausoleum these days. Even the household staff seemed effected by her absence, solemn stares and empty faces now replaced the laughter and smiles that he so fondly remembered.

With a lump in his throat, John made his way to his father’s study and then he stopped just before entering. He was about to face the man that had so patiently endured his recent behavior, a man that for so long stood by his side and encouraged him to pursue all of his hopes and dreams. He was going to ask this man for understanding and forgiveness, and to do his best to bridge the chasm that he had created between the two of them while he mourned his mother’s passing. While he stood their quietly just outside the room collecting his thoughts he suddenly heard unfamiliar voices coming from within. It took him only a moment to realize that his father wasn’t alone in there, but who were these men that he was talking with? He could barely hear what was being discussed, but from their tones the conversation seemed to be heated and aggressive. He only caught a few key words of their conversation; words such as ‘money’, ‘police’ and ‘secrecy’.

The conversation seemed to end abruptly and John could hear the sound of footsteps coming towards the entrance of the study. Hiding behind a nearby potted plant, John watched as his father escorted two men out of the room. Judging from their hostile demeanor and cheap suits, John could tell that these two men were most likely mobsters, but what was his father doing with mobsters? As the group walked out of view John silently snuck into his father’s study and made a bee-line for the large mahogany desk sitting at the back of the room. Noticing that his father’s personal files were still open on his computer, John decided to do some investigating. What he found on his father’s computer shocked him right down to the core of his soul. He discover that not only was his father involved with the local mob, but that he also recently purchased a financially trouble company called Vanguard Inc. to provide a legitimate business front for the Malfisto Crime Syndicate. What he found next left him speechless and horrified . . . his fathers criminal involvement was the unforeseeable cause of his own mother’s murder!

It seemed that an aging local vigilante going by the name of Vendetta had accidently shot his mother while trying to assassinate his father. Known for his one-man crusade against organized crime and his nickel plated Colt .45’s, Vendetta made it his personal business to hunt down and destroy the supposedly untouchable criminal element of Megalopolis. It was during that dark and unforgettable night so many months ago that Vendetta had paid his father an unexpected visit. He had told his father it was his time; time to pay for the things he had done and the choices he had made. John’s father was on his knees begging for his life when his mother had stumbled upon the pair. Not knowing about his illegal dealings she ran into the room and shielded her husband from what she perceived to be a desperate gun wielding burglar.

John had just finished reading the last of the files stored in the computer, when his father suddenly appeared in the doorway to the room. Not knowing exactly what or how much he may have seen, John’s father decided to play it cool and hoped his son didn’t have the chance to search threw his personal computer files. Looking sternly at his son he barked out at him in an authoritative tone, “Jonathan! It’s about time you showed up! I want to speak to you about your failing grades and your recent behavioral problems at school. I just got off the phone with the Dean not too long ago and . . .” His words were cut short when John suddenly picked up his father’s computer monitor and threw it against the wall. His father just stood there in a shock induced silence as John screamed in rage and flipped over his father’s desk. With his father haplessly watching on, John halted his destruction of his father’s study and with his head hung low, started to weep mournfully. He stood there crying for what seemed an eternity before his father finally mustered up the courage to speak once more. “John . . .” was the only thing he had a chance to say before his son stopped sobbing and began to walk towards him. With his heart beating a mile a minute, John’s father watched quietly as his son walked passed him and then stop just a few feet outside his study. With his back still towards him, John muttered a simple warning to father, “Don’t ever talk to me again as if we both don’t know what happened that night.” He then wiped the tears from his eyes and headed out the front door; that was the last time either one of them ever saw each other.

John promptly dropped out of college and immediately returned to his out of control partying lifestyle, but this time he did it with a renewed zeal in his heart. He quickly become infamous for partying at the wildest night clubs, drinking beyond excess, and for charming some of the city’s most beautiful women into his bed. His high profile antics were initially laughed off by many of the cities social elite as nothing more than the acts of a charmingly roguish and cavalier young man. As time went on however, John’s endless partying slowly began to take on a life of its own. His exploits turned into headlines, as the media started portraying him as a reckless and out of control playboy, who drove luxurious sports cars and always dated the most beautiful and most popular women. Eventually rumors of sexual promiscuity, alcohol addiction and DWI arrests began to surface, and the paparazzi saw to it that he was forever immortalized in tabloid snapshots and seedy scandal sheets. Despite John’s overly public lifestyle becoming a constant source of embarrassment for him, John’s father never ‘cut him off’ again. For fear of how he might act or of what he might say, his father has turned a blind eye to son’s openly scandalous behavior.

Over the years John has done nothing to discourage people from perceiving him as a whimsical playboy with an incurable addiction to fast cars, beautiful women and good scotch. To the general public he is nothing more than an irresponsible, self-absorbed, and superficial magnet for the paparazzi that takes advantage of his family's ‘old money’ name and vast fortune. Social critics of the roguish socialite often refer to him as “a drunken womanizer recklessly stumbling his way through his family’s wealth as if it was his own personal piggy bank.” Luckily for John the entire playboy persona is just that, a clever facade designed to keep anyone from ever guessing that he is actually the superhero known as Catalyst. As Catalyst, John is free to act and behave in a way that would make even his once highly respected grandfather proud of him. Although still armed with a quick tongue and rapier wit; as Catalyst, he conducts himself in such a truly selfless and courageous fashion that no one would ever think to deny him his rightful title – Superhero!
