Quest: Safe Keeping! - Issue 42

Location: Jacco’s Village Hideout on Easter Island

The battle between the Guardians, the Tarot Masters, and the Natural Forces ended. With the Natural Forces changing sides the Guardians won the fight and Jacco fled into the room below his hut.

Adamas scanned the battleground smiling, slightly.  His last battle with Super Nova had been playing cat and mouse in the brain coral trying to keep the villain away from the team... this just felt, right.

Coriolis landed in the hut looking through the hole in the floor. She could not see Jacco. “Thunderhead, what happened to Obituary? Is he still a threat?” Coriolis waited for a response.

Quarry joined Coriolis. He looked into the sky. “Is that really Clark Powers, the famous missing archeologist and superhero?”

Donnah smiled and chuckled, “Yes, Frank, it is your childhood hero. He has indeed returned”

Conflagration landed next to Quarry. “Wow, I did my Doctoral Thesis on his Peru expedition”

Quarry nodded “Yeah, mine was on his China discoveries”

Both men stared in awe at the archeologist extraordinaire.

Thunderhead heard the elementals talking about his life like it was ancient history. He didn't let on.

The gentle giant put Xing out of his mind and answered his teammates' questions. He didn't use the amulet this time, so that the elementals would hear him... as well as Mother Superior. "Jacco is still alive, so remain on your guard.  Below, I encountered Jacco's master, Supay, the Incan god of death.  I believe I injured Supay, perhaps fatally, if such a thing is even possible. I couldn't check because I was called back to the surface.

"Jacco had been the puppet of Supay for nearly a century. I don't know what havoc Supay's death, and the loss of the Soul Scythe, will do to Jacco's already unstable mind."

That last part was a lie.  Thunderhead knew exactly what it would do.

Adamas slowly lowered himself beside Donnah, laying his hand on her shoulder; he reached for the invisible amulet around his neck, bringing it over his head.  "If you are feeling more yourself, I think someone would like to hear from you," he handed the amulet to her.

Donnah thanked Adamas with a breezy kiss on the check. "Grandfather, I am okay ..." She thought through the amulet then focused so only Dr Avery could hear her thoughts. Adamas saw pockets of air flow from her eyes in the shape of tears but instead of falling from her checks to the ground, they flowed up into the sky.

Chris patted Starbolt on the back as Black Orchid's darkness dissipated. "Thanks, Sister Indigo was a pain, literally."

Chris said, "Black Orchid, please keep a good eye on that scythe. I think you're our best bet as its wielder."

"Nice teamwork everyone” The Guardians team leader said.

It was softly snowing on Easter Island.

Jack idly lay atop a cloud with his hands behind his head. “How can it be that no two are alike?” he mused as he happily watched the mortals beneath him, humming with energy and power. How much progress they’ve made in the time he'd been away. So much speed and light and noise. What use could these dazzling, modern mortals have for dusty, ancient folk such as he?

Then his bright blue eyes looked closer and realized he was watching a gold armored knight (CX), a giant (Thunderhead), a winged angel (Red Hawk), a goddess of the night (Black Orchid), a herculean hero (Adamas), and a sun god (Starbolt), who had just battled wizards, demons and elementals.

Jack smiled. Perhaps this modern, speeding world was still connected to the old ways after all.

Mother superior spun in the air as CX spoke to the others via the amulet, "Looks Like we've got this part wrapped up.  Oh, she’s still awake in there and I imagine quite perturbed.  What's out next move?"

The veteran of the Great War then crouched down his Giant body to interrogate their prisoner, Mother Superior, in a voice like low thunder. "What did Sister Indigo mean when she said the Soul Scythe must be destroyed?"

Mother Superior replied, "The Soul-Scythe captures the soul of its victim. As Hierophant she believes it was a sacrilegious device. The soul belongs to its god and it should stand in judgment before receiving its reward or punishment. It should not become stranded as part of a tool wielded by mortals.

Thunderhead said "What else is in the tunnels beneath us?” Mother Superior replied, “It is a tomb, not a tunnel but I don't know whose."

Thunderhead replied "Where is the Domain Gate? The captive Tarot Master replied “Somewhere within the tomb but I don't know where. Only Jacco and Lord Noman have ever entered the tomb."

"When the Domain learns of your failure, what will they do next?”

Thunderhead heard a change in Mother Superior’s voice. He now understood why she was Judgment of the Tarot Masters, “You fool, you have done nothing. Our job was to protect the Gate. We haven't failed. Jacco is between you and the Gate and you don't even know where it is. Soon their bridge to this Dimension will be complete and their invasion force will storm your world."

CX waited until the team is done questioning her.

"Are we done with her?  If so, I'm going to knock her out." Thunderhead nodded that he was and none of the other Guardians had any questions.

Once she was out, CX used some of the steel ball bearing in his pack to create solid wrist and ankle cuffs for all of the baddies.  He waited for further instructions.

"If we have a wounded demon down there, perhaps we should go put it under wraps before it has a chance to regenerate, heal, grow or whatever a demon does to get healthy." CX said.

Starbolt continued to look around to ensure that all protagonists are down and secured by CX, when he heard CX comment on the demon possibility responded. "Not that I don't agree with you CX, but isn't the safe return of the scythe, our first priority? I'm willing to go along with you, but The Doc did say that this was the primary mission."

Glancing towards Red Hawk he said. "So Dude, should we contact the good Doctor and get his thoughts on the matter?"

Red Hawk said “I think taking time to consult Dr. Arcane is a fine idea. Quite a few of us took some good shots. I don't know about everybody else but I could use a few minutes to at least catch my breath."

Red Hawk said “How is everyone feeling? My regenerative systems should have me close to fully repaired soon. Thunder you took some good hits yourself. Are you going to be good to continue?”

Thunderhead indicated he could.

CX piped up, "Is it wise to carry the scythe into Certaflag's backyard?  I know we have to go, but does the scythe.  If it was that important to his plans I would think taking it to him would be a very bad idea.  I'm just saying...  Perhaps we can get the Doc to meet us and carry the scythe to a safe place away from Crackafrog's reach?"

Thunderhead said, "We need to get the Scythe off Easter Island immediately, or risk it falling back into Jacco's hands."

Dr. Avery responded "I have no idea whether his plans depend on it or not. I know it is a powerful magic artifact that benefits whoever has it. If you want to bring it to me without giving Jacco the chance to escape then give it to War Wagon. He can fly it to me while the Guardians take other actions."

Jack felt an evil vibe from the Soul Scythe. It desired to consume souls. He felt its hunger. He said "That accursed artifact will only harm us in the end."

Having felt the protections offered by the Scythe and replaying the files DarkStar had made available to him before Chris and the team left for Easter Island. "Actually I think it's time the Guardians think about using the artifacts in this quest. If we are going to take on a being capable of defeating the Super Forces and almost all of Earth's heroes on their own home turf we're going to need every edge we can get.  You all saw the fear the Tarot Masters exhibited at us potentially wielding the Scythe for our benefit. I don't mean to judge after the fact but I think DarkStar and the other original Guardians might have missed an opportunity when they let Pietor make off with the amulet and cloak. I don't think the enemy was after these items to use against us, I think these are items the enemy fears are going to be used against him."

Adamas said, "I agree, a weapon like this could turn the tide in the coming battle.  I do not think we should leave it behind."

The Black Orchid felt The Soul-Scythe trying to entice her to strike the others. It wanted to consume their souls.

"There will be no soul-sucking while I'm holding the scythe" The Black Orchid listened to the conversations

Red Hawk said "Black Orchid, I understand if you have reluctance to carry the Scythe into the coming battle. I will take the task of that is the case. I was the first to grasp it and being what I am, I don't believe I have a soul for the weapon to steal.”

Black Orchid felt confident in her ability to keep control of it. "I'm not afraid of holding the Scythe; I just might not be strong enough to fend off someone if they wanted to take it from me."

Red Hawk said, “I don't want any of us heading into a potential ambush if they aren't up to it. From the sounds of it we can't take forever but prudence and a bit of planning can't hurt. We have a long drive before we get to the end zone."

Reviewing each of his teammates, and eyeing the scythe, Adamas turned to Red Hawk.  "We have gained allies today, but we have allies that are awaiting us in the Domain.  I think we need to find that Gateway and fast."

Thunderhead offered to sketch out what he saw below. He looked at the typewriter attached to the miniature movie screen. He instead sketched out a rough map in the dirt of the chamber where he encountered Jacco and Supay

Red Hawk said "Once we've caught our breath I want to make sure Adamas checks ahead of us with his Ethereal vision. Black Orchid should stay between Centurion X and Thunderhead unless we need a covert entry into a room. Adamas and I will take the lead otherwise. Starbolt and Jack keep your heads on a swivel for an ambush from behind"

"Donnah, I’m glad to see you and the other Elementals have broken Cr’tegorf and his minions influence. If we are going to chase Jacco down his rabbit whole were going to need someone to keep an eye on our back until the Tarot Masters are secured properly."

Donnah replied, “The Natural Forces will be glad to remain here. We can help War Wagon load the Tarot Masters up so they can be taken to F.I.S.H. We will gladly watch your rears.” There was a bit of a devilish smile on her lips when she said the last sentence.

Red Hawk said to the rest of the Guardians. "If we are going to do this let's have a plan, at least a marching order that makes sense if we are going underground. Black Orchid's our obvious master of stealth. I suggest Adamas use his ethereal vision to scout each passage or room before we enter. If it's locked I'll enter by vibrating through using my heightened senses to detect for danger, if it's open Orchid takes lead with the rest following on our heels

Starbolt Said "No problem Red Hawk, I agree about a solid plan being essential. I would have no problem flying rear guard and protecting our six, if that is ok with all of you."

Thunderhead shrunk down to his 6 foot height. He could not enter the tomb in his taller state.

Thunderhead tried to wait as patiently as he could for it took 30 minutes for most of the Guardians to catch their breath.

With the team ready, Adamas lead them into the unknown tomb below.

Very nice!  I like it a lot!

IC:  Mother superior spins in the air as CX speaks to the others via the amulet, "Looks Like we've got this part wrapped up.  Oh, she’s still awake in there and I imagine quite perturbed.  What's out next move?"

CX will try to knock Mother superior out with constriction.  He doesn't want to do any permanent harm but wants her unconscious so she's not a threat.  If he cannot knock her out quickly in this manner, he'll just hold her and wait for orders.  he will resist any attempts she makes to break free, though.

OOC: Deadline is here!

Thunderhead would go below with the team, in search of Jacco and the gate. If he can remain giant sized, he would. Otherwise, he'll go human-sized.  If we can go in with evasions active, I'd recommend it.  If he hasn't killed himself, Jacco is as dangerous as a cornered rat right now.  As they search, Thunderhead will save his action, for use in defending his teammates from Jacco.  If Thunderhead can use any meta-senses to detect Jacco (micro variations in the air?) he will.

Jack Frost will follow the team below as well, (ice defense active, evading if possible) ready to help flush out the last evil, miserable sorcerer (Jacco).

Best,
Jeff

The Black Orchid took the scythe like she was asked, and she asked what to do with it since she wasn't privy to any of the mental communications, but I don't think anyone responded.

Marc

You are correct Jeff; I am trying to allow the other Players provide their thoughts instead of the GM directing the team through Dr Arcane.

The team has had a member suggest taking the artifact with them to stop the Domain, it has been suggested to take it with them into the tombs to try to find Jacco, and it was also suggest that it should be taken to Dr Avery.

For the newer players and those that can't remember 4 years ago clearly (like me). Dr Arcane stated the Quest was to get the Artifacts to help defeat the Domain. He didn't state whether hiding the Artifacts from the Domain was how to defeat them and he has not demanded any of the artifacts be brought to him. He has left how they will be used by the players (with a few evil GM twists thrown in)

The Statue was thrown into the sun by Adamas.
The Orb is locked in DarkStar's Secret Underground research and development facility.
The Scroll is in Dr. Avery's safe.
The Gemstone and the Clock is being worn by Pietor.
The Scythe is being held by Black Orchid

If the team wants GM input, I will gladly provide it but it will have to be as part of the next issue since it is so late.

Please let me know if you what your plans are and if you want an issue to regroup?

John, I am still waiting on Red Hawks turn.

Thanks
Tom

CX is successful in knocking out Mother Superior. Let me know when CX will do this, I am guessing it is after Thunderhead questions her but let me know if it is right afterwards or how much later (or it could before and then she is waken for interrogation). Let me know.

While this is a combat action I am counting it during the down turn while the others are gathering. So far no one has stormed after Jacco.

Thanks
Tom

Quick GM clarification needed.

From the email traffic I have the team resting for 30 minutes to catch their breath while War Wagon comes to get the Soul-Scythe.

Donnah and the Natural Forces will stay in Jacco's hut to protect the rear.

Black Orchid will lead the way
Adamas is next
Red Hawk is next
CX is next (based on Initiative Roll, where I down have player direction I am using Initiative)
Thunderhead is next (based on Initiative)
Jack Frost is next (based on Initiative)
Starbolt is last.

Please let me know if I have any wrong or if any changes are needed.

Thanks

Tom,

Adamas will be scanning ahead with his Ethereal vision as Red Hawk recommended.

Jon
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If anyone has any "special vision" they should probably lead, although The Black Orchid is happy to as well.

Marc
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Adamas would be happy to take the lead.

Jon
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
CX will take the assigned position in the center.  He will have the bearing in the back already grasped with his magnetic control.  If trouble should pop up, he will try to use them to protect party.  His first reaction will be to use the mass of metal as a shield for anyone who is being attacked.

Dave
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
OOC:  30 minutes is a long time to wait.  If we're only waiting for War Wagon to show, is there any other way to secure the Scythe before we descend into the tomb?

Jeff
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I picked 30 minutes because that would allow everyone to be at full Power Points except for Red Hawk.  Red Hawk needs 10 minutes to fully heal but will not refresh his Power Points during that time. (I am not charging him Power Points as a second action like in combat. I have broken down the 10 second increments for 1 round of healing without using Power but he won't gain power because his android body is actively repairing himself)

If you want to go into the tomb sooner let me know how long you wait. Donnah can hold the Soul-Scythe while waiting for War Wagon to get there.

I currently have the leader of the Guardians and the majority in favor taking the Soul-Scythe with the team instead of sending it away.

I have only 1 objection to the team taking 30 minutes to rest before entering the Tomb of Cor beneath Jacco's hut. The alternative is 10 minutes (time needed for Red Hawk to fully heal HP) but I received no communication for the shorter time. The 30 minutes would allow most the team to completely rest up all their Power Points. So I am still using 30 minutes.

The agreed to order to entering (it has to be single file down the stairs) is Adamas, Black Orchid, Red Hawk, CX, Thunderhead, Jack Frost, and then Starbolt.

Please confirm or object. I am treating no replies as confirmation for the plan.

Thanks

OOC:
Hi,
I think my guys are in the minority.

Thundy and Jack don't want to use the Soul Scythe for fear of its curse infecting a hero, or having the Scythe fall back into the hands of the villains.

And Thundy doesn't want to give Jacco or Supay 30 minutes to recover / escape through a secret tunnel / activate their magical doomsday weapon.  Thundy wants us to press our advantage.

Jack doesn't have an opinion about the 30 minute wait and is content to laze atop soft snowy clouds.
