Quest: Entering the Domain - Issue 24

Location: Dr. Avery’s Mansion

The Team had defeated the undead left behind by Occult. DSA and FISH agents were quickly on the scene. FISH took the revenants in custody including Manslaughter’s ashes. As the ashes are being gather The Cure thought back to the battle. How when the energy orb dissipated all she can see was Manslaughter's ashes the Cure felt sick thinking she just helped to kill someone. Stunned at what she had done she watched the rest of the action unfold then thought to herself "Elwood. I have to check on Elwood." She looked about and it looked like everything is well in hand and said "looks like you boys can clean things up I'll grab Mr. Dowd."

The Cure presented herself to the DSA agent in charge of the scene and reported her activities in the fight and her breaking of the Superhero Code. The agent listened grimly then motioned for a FISH agent to join them. Quickly the DSA quizzed him on the nature and status of Manslaughter as well as the other 2 undead beings being taken into custody by FISH.  The agent in charge turned back to The Cure.

“I appreciate your due diligence on this matter and prompt reporting of a suspected violation.  Do not worry; you and your friends here did not violate the Superhero Code.  Manslaughter is a revenant. Revenant is an animated corpse that is returned from the grave to terrorize the living.  It is very likely that Occult is the summoner who brought him back.  You did not kill anyone. You stopped a corpse which was only going to continue to terrorize.

While carrying the soggy Samhain to the transport vehicle Joshua overheard the FISH agent easing the Cure's concerns over the cremation of Manslaughter. He booted his black clad opponent. "So ... what about this guy?"

“The same is true for Samhain, he has an ancient evil spirit in him but this isn’t a case of demonic possession. The person was killed before the evil spirit entered. He is undead as well.”

Commander Rose was rough but business like in expressing his concern over Samhain’s escape. He apologized to FISH for leaving him in the care of CHESS after their last battle, not realizing FISH’s specialty in dealing with the paranormal, he hoped they have better facilities for keeping him incarcerated. He offered the technical services of his company at cost if they are needed and hoped to coordinate the possibility of building a reserved holding facility. He carefully pointed out the economic benefits and the increased safety factor to the non-meta agents who generally are responsible for transporting captured villains.

The lead FISH agent politely thanked Rose for the offer. As Joshua joined The Team he heard another FISH agent mutter, “I wonder if he offered his services to NASA at cost too. Hmm, bet that is how he got his in which shut down NASA’s space program.”

The Cure thought about what the agent had said. She flew to where Elwood was standing. She looked down at him and wished he could see the smile on her face. She just won her first battle and would love if her dad could have seen it and let her know it was alright or not. She still can't shake that feeling that what she did was wrong. Bad guy or not, undead or not this can't be right. Maybe a short talk with Elwood could make her see things in a better light. In a very warm voice as she hovered above Mr. Dowd. “Do you need a lift? I'll only charge you the chance to talk."

"Thank you Mary.  Your fee is my pleasure," Elwood replied and continued with a mild tone, "That was quite a show you engaged in down there.  Harvey has explained to me that those... men with the chainsaws were probably quite dangerous.  I think they needed a good bowl of oatmeal." A wink and a smirk were given as Elwood stood and made himself available for the ascent.  With only a slightly more serious voice, he observed, "I hope our host isn't too put out by all the mess that was made of his lovely library."

Elwood's mild tone, the wink and the funny little smirk on his face made Mary feel safe and warm. It was very comforting. She seemed to let her guard down around him. As they made their way she could see the damage."Yes I do believe oatmeal would have helped them. Maybe with some brown sugar?" Trying hard not to laugh. Her tone switched when once again seeing the blown out wall to the library "Oh my your friends do make quite a mess don't they?"

As the two touched ground Mr. Dowd's expression brightened.  "Thank you again my dear.  And now I would very much like to introduce you to someone very special to me." Elwood's eyes looked behind Mary, just over her shoulder and he extended his right hand as he gestured for her to turn to meet "Harvey.  This is Mary." Of course there was nothing over Mary's shoulder to see, but Elwood continued just the same.  "Mary, Harvey here is my dearest friend." Elwood always enjoyed introducing people to Harvey and this time was no exception since he took an immediate liking to the young nurse.

She thought to herself “Really!? Elwood is out of his bird. No one is behind me. Maybe I'll just play along see where it goes. I don't want to hurt his feelings. In a strange way he reminds me of...." She tracked his eyes to where she believed Harvey would stand then curtsy and said "Please to meet you Harvey. I would hope that next time you would take better care of your friend here. But no need to fret I will always watch over Mr. Dowd as best as I can." She turned back to Elwood then started to float away "Gentlemen till we meet again. Oh and Mr. Dowd if you don't mind if you call me The Cure instead of Mary when in the company of others I would be in your debt."

As soon as DSA and FISH left, The Team contacted Dr. Avery. Pietor opened a portal for them to come to their safe location.  The Team stepped onto a small archeological dig site. Cybil quickly identified they were in the Nacht Island group.

Location: Nacht Island

Pietor greeted them. The newly crowned, reluctant Team leader would make proper introductions with the Cure and The Team. "Nice work back there," he said to the Cure, extending his big hand for a shake. "You helped us out of a tight spot."

She reached out to meet his hand. "That's one heck of away to have to introduce myself." she said with a giggle. Still holding his hand she says" how rude of me I'm The Cure. And you are?"

“Agent America”

Pietor led them over to the entrance of a small temple ruins. There they found Dr. Avery grief stricken and overcome by tears. Dr. Avery tried to speak to them but couldn’t. Pietor said they knew where Donnah was and why.

Pietor explained. “Some months ago, a small golden casket was unearthed at the archeological dig of a 2,000 year old tell in Egypt.  With great care, the casket was opened and found to contain five remarkably well-preserved scrolls.  The casket itself was placed on display in the Egyptian Museum in Cairo. Unknown to the Domain and its allies the scrolls were sent to America. One each was sent to five prominent scholars for translation and analysis. Dr. Avery was one of those scholars even though his field of expertise has never been archeology or linguistics but parapsychology and the history of occult science.”

DarkStar said, “Pietor? The earliest records I can find of the Domain only date back to 1334. Just how long has the Domain been attempting to invade Earth?”

“You have found the correct records. These scrolls were not Domain created. They were created by Earthly Mages.”

DarkStar replied, “And why aren’t the Chosen involved in this fight? It seems to be what they exist for?”

“The Chosen are here to fight the Domain. The villains you have faced are not from the Domain.  Here is a military analogy to help comprehend the situation. The Chosen are on the Battlefront fighting the advances of the Domain.  The Team is on the home front fighting sympathizers and saboteurs.”

“On the scroll sent to Dr. Avery, since I do have a doctorate in archeology I did the translation and analysis. The purpose in sending the scroll to Dr. Avery was for more than to study the fifth scroll, but to guard it and prevent it from falling into evil hands. If what small portion of the scroll I translated is accurate, then this scroll holds the key to the proper use of the other four, and those four contain long-forgotten secrets of mystic and ancient alchemical transubstantiation which could shake the very foundation of modern science.  I believe the Domain destroyed the Golden Casket attempting to get the five scrolls that they thought were inside it.”

“We attempted to contact the other four scholars. Three are missing and the last one is in the hospital. He was hurt in a burglary gone badly.  The police did not know all that was stolen from the house but I believe the Domain is behind this. I believe they have acquired all five scrolls and took the three scholars as well.”

“The transubstantiation spell will not work in the Domain. It has to have Earth reagents. These reagents can be human but they need a fourth. We believe they took Donnah to be the fourth reagent.”

Listening further Joshua asked one more question. “This … ancient alchemical transubstantiation … How do we stop it? Just grabbing the …” Angrily thinking of Donnah in the clutches of Occult. Looking at Doc Joshua hesitated but took a breath and pushed forward. “… reagents can’t be enough. They’ll just grab more helpless victims and do the same.”

“Grab the scrolls too.”

Dr. Avery let out a low moan and started to speak. “Not again. It can’t be happening again.”  He stopped and for the first time noticed that The Team was here.

Straightening his composure he looked each in the eye. “I am sorry I have failed you. Of all the enemies I have gained as Doctor Arcane during the course of my career, the greatest was the Domain sorceress known as Ch’andarra. In our first encounter, in early 1933, I discovered Ch’andarra lording it over an isolated tribe of purebred Incas in a remote Andean valley. Sensing that she was, despite her guise of incomparable human beauty, something not of this world, I challenged her, tricked her into defeat, and forced her to depart this plane. But as she retreated, she swore vengeance against me and promised that she would destroy me and all that I loved.”

{GM Note – To read the history of Ch’andarra and Dr. Arcane go to Quest Issue 23}

“The last time she attacked, she successfully captured my grandchild, Donnah and myself. Ch’andarra released me and Donnah in exchange for a spark of my own mortality which might allow her to impart her essence into a more fragile being capable of learning how truly to love.”

“Occult is that form. She is both Earth and Domain and she has Donnah.”

“You have to go to the Domain and get her back for me. Fortunately the spell is a very complicated ritual we have three days to prepare and stop the ceremony.”

Joshua said, “I swear Doc, whatever it takes we’ll get Donnah back.”

Agent America listened to Doc Arcane's long, sad story and his face fell. He'd yell at the old wizard about lack of security later. Now, he put a reassuring hand on Doc's shoulder.

“DarkStar, I have been working with the Geonesian for years. They find allies to empower to protect themselves from the threat of the Null Masters. They have provided Earth with a new Guardian. His name is Magus. I would like to introduce you to him now.” At that time a new person entered the temple ruin.

“Pietor will no longer be my student. He has accomplished his training. If Magus is willing I would like to teach him what I know of the mystic arts”

Dr. Avery paused and looked Pietor in the eyes. Pietor nodded in the affirmative. Dr. Avery sighed and his faced showed he was making a decision he would likely regret but had no choice in the matter. “Magus, Harvey, and Elwood will accompany me back to the Mansion to make preparations for opening the portal into the Domain.”

“Agent America, Adamas, DarkStar, and The Cure will help Pietor retrieve the artifact we need to power the spell.”

Pietor opened the portal. Dr. Avery and the ones chosen to accompany him walked through to enter the Mansion once again.

They quickly unsealed the rear door of the main chamber. Immediately upon entering the doors, they proceeded directly to a hidden and sealed alcove that contained a dull yellow gemstone literally glowing with supernatural energy of the most evil variety. As The Team fought off and defeated the protectors of the alcove, Pietor placed the gem to his forehead where it grated itself irrevocably into his flesh and into his soul.

The gemstone was a magic portal through which Pietor had but to will open to let this ancient evil race walk once more upon the Earth. The gemstone activated the portal against Pietor’s will. It started to open and The Team saw the demons of the Domain start to enter through. With an unspoken signal from their leader The Team launch on the attack. Quickly and successfully beating the demons back to where they came from.

Smashing one of the stone-like gargoyles within his reach against the temple walls DarkStar looked around and saw the last one leaping toward Pietor’s back just as the mage raised the gem to his head. “Pietor NO!”

*Whoump*

Choosing between stopping Pietor and stopping the creature was no choice. DarkStar combat jumped between the gargoyle and mage shielding the sorcerer with his own body. Joshua slammed both his fist through the stone-like creatures body shattering it to bits. Bruised, bloodied the blue brawler turned to the mage as the Portal opened. “Damn it Pietor … why?”

“I have the strength to be its master while all others are too weak” was his reply.

They provided Pietor with the time he needed. Possessed of an indomitable will he regained control over the gemstone and resisted the Null Masters at the last crucial moment. They have been denied their place on this plane.

Pietor opened a portal to the Mansion and signaled it was time to return. The team walked back into the mansion.

They were told to take four hours to gather the supplies they would need for spending a week in the Domain.

Magus spent the four hours in private meditation with Dr Arcane.

Harvey and Elwood went to stock ample liquid supplies for the trip.

The Cure visited her father and patients to wish them goodbye and assure them she would visit them again.

During the four hours of prep time, Agent America focused on the job at hand instead. "Petey, give us a primer on this place we're headed to. We need all the Intel we can get." Pietor left with AA to provide information on the dimension they were going to. After the meeting Agent America meet with The Team one more time. "See you all back here the appointed hour." He said as he left to make his preparations.

Before leaving to acquire the items he’d need for this Quest, Joshua channeled his thoughts privately to Dr. Arcane. “Merlin needed Arthur and Excalibur, Gandalf needed Aragorn and Anduril. I pledge myself as your Champion. Cybil and I will bring Donnah home or die in the trying. I swear.”

*Whoump*

Teleporting into his private office/suite atop StarCorp Towers Commander Rose sheds the hero uniform the fashion expert, Mrs. Stitch, had constructed for him with advice from his public relations consultant, Nigel Bird. "Cybil we're on a deadline. Please inform Trish and Adrian to meet me in the Special Projects Lab. Inform Team Hephaestus I need all hands on deck immediately." After practically running through the sonic shower, Joshua dresses in his one piece sterile electronics lab uniform and makes a call to Solomon of the Chosen. He had been meaning to make this particular call since the Star-Devourer incident, but something else always seemed to pop up.

These guys have been fighting the Domain for millennia, with Doc's mansion trashed I can't think of anyone more qualified to look after the Orbs while we're gone. I'll have Trish contact Safeguard. She's much better with people than I am, and even if they were out of their class, I would really like a chance to make amends for the Destroyer confrontation. Even if the Chosen can't spare the time or manpower to keep an eye on Doc and Pietor, these guys are plenty qualified to provide a perimeter picket around the mansion. If the Tarot Masters appear, all they need to do is give Doc and Pietor time enough to escape to a safe location. "Cybil, let's get this ball rolling."

*Whoump*

Joshua smiled as the technicians of Team Hephaestus barely acknowledge his arrival in the Special Projects Lab. They were his very best. When not working on a designated assignment, they were free to take their research any direction that did not violate StarCorp safety protocols. Most were young geniuses with wild ideas no one else would take a chance on. They reminded him of himself before MEDUSA had talked him into their black-ops tech division. They had recently finished the examination and analysis of an android at the behest of the DSA, but now he needed them to assist him construct a number of devices to increase Cybil's effectiveness on the Quest.

Joshua walked over to the Team Leader, Samantha Davis, an old friend from back in the "old days". Unashamedly picking the tiny woman up in a bear hug, he set her down with a wicked grin. She might seem shy and embarrassed but Joshua knew her as a quick thinking problem solver, who couldn't abide fools. He couldn't have a better mentor for the prodigies of Team Hephaestus. "Sam, I'm sorry to pull the team off their projects but I'm working on a deadline and I need these components asap. Remember that hovering eye-cam I've been reverse engineering in my spare time … try and construct as many as possible with full spectrum capabilities in four hours."

Shaking her head at her old teammate's request, the tiny woman looks the Cerulean Commander in the eye and laughed. "Well Joshua, never let it be said you don't come up with an interesting challenge. We'll do our best." Fondly slipping his hand on her shoulder Joshua smiled appreciatively. "I know you will Sam. I'll be here assisting as much as possible. I might have to step out a couple times, but I'll always be in contact, this is an Alpha rated projected so only Trish and Cybil will have comm-priority over you right now."  As Sam excused herself to get the team started the elevator doors opened up and Trisha and Adrian walked over to meet Joshua at one of the workstations.

Waving for both to sit down Joshua activated the table's holo-programs, First sending all the schematics of the devices Team Hephaestus would need, he then downloaded the list of items he needed Adrian to make ready for his Team's adventure into the Domain. "Adrian I need your logistics officer to have ready this survival and comm-gear in my offices as quick as possible. Also I need you to contact Kyle Pickerson asap. When you find him, politely inform him to find an isolated location and that I'll be arriving immediately. Tell him it involves his current responsibilities."

As Adrian left Joshua looked at Trish. "You made a good call promoting him after the Joumpur mission. I'll miss seeing him in the field, but I'm glad it's given him and Julie time to get married. Now is as good a time as any. "Cybil please initiate Protocol Athena." Catching his best friend and pseudo-big sister's upraised eyebrow he started to explain. "Trish I'm sorry if you had plans, but this one might be a while, and I'm going to be impossible to contact. You'll need to set all facilities on meta-alert status. I also want you to put protective details on Kev, Prof, and Sarrisa. Please notify one of the Tower's reserve teams to be ready. I'll take them with me when I go to meet Kyle."

Trish cut Joshua off at that point, “I am not sending a detail to Kev. He is a MEDUSA agent on a MEDUSA base. I will notify him of your concerns but no babysitters.”

With a heavy sigh, Joshua tried to stop his thoughts racing from one priority to the next, but time was so short and there's so much to try to do. "As you know, you'll be de facto head of StarCorp operations while I'm gone. Take care of our baby. That reminds me. Would you contact Professor Abercrombie. I'd like to see all the applications he's making of the diatanium, if he's available for an impromptu visit when I get back." ***"Joshua, Adrian has informed me that Kyle Pickerson was a bit flustered but will be available in one minute."*** "Thank you Cybil. Trish I'm sorry this won't take long, please tell Sam I'll be right back." With that Commander Rose walked to the elevator and …

After a change to civilian clothes, and a quick stop with a few appreciative words to the security team's logistics officer, Cybil locked onto Kyle's coordinates and Rose teleported . . .  *Whoump* . . . into an executive's bathroom. Turning around he saw his old team mate and current Meta-Manpower German Human Resources Director. Joshua can't help but smile as the man puffs on his inhaler. He remembered the respect he had for the little man after discovering he suffered from asthma. He stood side beside with Agent and Adamas against Occult in Juompur, and was there we banished the Star-Devourer at that damned bridge. "Hi Kyle! We've all missed you on the Team."

Seeing the look in his friend's eye, Joshua quickly shifted the conversation. " … but that's not why I'm here today. I don't have a lot of time but rest assured this has nothing to do with the Quest. I'm concerned at the disproportionate number of meta-individuals Germany keeps hiring. I felt I had to talk to you personally. I might not be available for a longtime and I needed someone I could trust to keep an eye open over here. I know you care about these people's lives, their safety, as much as I do. I just want to be sure they aren't being taken advantage of. Please, don't trust this to subordinates. Do some follow ups, some face to face meetings. Whatever you do, don't put yourself in any danger. "

Joshua takes a card from his pocket. "Here's a number to contact Blitzkrieg if you suspect anything fishy. Let him know you're working for me, if he can help, I'm sure he will. " Handing him a silver suit case Joshua steps back. "There's a StarCorp comm-badge in there with some other toys. You have direct beta-comm channel to my chief security officer, Adrian House. He has instructions to assist you anyway you think you need. Remember just keep your eyes open and shake some hands. It's probably nothing, but I have a strange feeling and appreciate your assistance. I promise to stay and let you show me around when I get back. You've done great work here. Thanks."

*Whoump*

DarkStar returned to his team gather up his equipment. All the equipment he has requested for with the exception of the Huntsman’s spy eye device. There was only 1 sitting on the table. Samantha explained that they were only able to build a single prototype. The Huntsman version did not have independent operational capability and they didn’t have time to design one. Joshua would have to use his gauntlet to steer it.

The Spy Eye had a perceptive range of 25 feet and can transmit up to 1 mile. Its floating platform is made of transparent material and it could be operated for 5 hours before needing to be recharged which would take 20 minutes. The recharging generator is in Joshua’s backpack.

{GM Note: 1 Invention point used for creation of Spy Eye and 1 Luck Point spent to cover time requirement retroactively. Spy Eye is ¼ power level of the Huntsman’s Spy Eye device as per inventing rules. Further invention points and level advancements can be used to increase the quantity and power level of the Spy Eye.)

Trish informed Joshua that Solomon agreed to help in exchange for the Orbs and Safeguard agreed to patrol the Mansion’s grounds.

Now all he had to do was deliver the Orbs to Solomon and then he would be ready to return to Dr. Avery’s Mansion.

Adamas looked around at his teammates; they suddenly seemed occupied with preparing for the long trip, when he realized he needed nothing but himself.  He looked over at Magus, in a serious discussion with Dr. Avery and Pietor, Agent America has already disappeared up the stairs, the Cure and Elwood are talking, and DarkStar having already “Whoumped” out.

Something stirred in him, perhaps it was the dim return of his memories, or perhaps it was discovering he had been turned into what he was today, and that it could be taken away.   Suddenly he did not want to be alone.  He thought of Donna who was always there, always around the mansion, and realized he was worried about her.  The mansion seemed cold and lifeless without her.  He didn’t feel like a quick trip to the Space station, but a thought did come to mind.

Adamas walked out the hole in the library wall, stepping over debris and books, vaguely wondering who was going to clean this up, and took to the sky’s heading toward downtown Megalopolis.  He quickly identified his destination by the large letters atop the building, and glided to the front revolving doors.

People at street level stopped what they were doing and stared.  A car nearby slammed on its brakes as the taxi in front of it suddenly swerved the drivers head looking back over his shoulder to see what the commotion was.  Everyone stepped back and gave the almost glowing white figure dropping from the sky room, as if he was surrounded by some kind of bubble.  He glanced around at the crowd and said simply “good afternoon.”

He turned and entered the building, nodding to the security guard standing behind his desk with a cup of coffee.  Adamas approached the receptionist who was busily handling a telephone that looked like some kind of electronic toy with all of its flashing lights.   She paid little attention to who might be coming up to her desk as she again and again said, “One moment please.”  After a few moments, Adamas cleared his throat in an attempt to get her attention.  At this point, she realized there was someone waiting for her attention, and glanced up.  “Do you have….,” her voice trailed off as she saw the figure standing before her, the gum she had been gnawing on like a bone fell from her mouth.

Adamas looked around to see what had caused this reaction, but saw nothing strange in the lobby.  He turned back, “I’m here to see Ms. Jessica Anderson; can you help me?”  She continued to stare, and seemed to suddenly realize where she was, a voice coming out of her headset could be heard, “Hello, Hello?”  She said, “Please hold,” and removed the headset.  “Ah, Yes, Her office is on the 23rd floor in the Southwest Corner.  Would you like someone to show you the way?”

“He’ll need a badge,” the security guard started.  “Shut up Charlie,” she interrupted.  Her eye’s taking in Adamas 6’6” heavily muscled body, wrapped in spandex.  She presses a button on her phone and says, “I need an intern at the front desk.” She turns back to Adamas, straightening her skirt, “I’m Darlene, and I’ll be happy to take care of you.”

A short time later, Adamas stepped out of the elevator on the 23rd floor, guided skillfully through the maze of cubicles by the ever so helpful Darlene.  A buzz of activity could be heard across the floor, but it seemed an expanding circle of silence spread as they entered the maze.  Heads popped up looking over the walls, phones hung loosely between heads and shoulders feel to desks covered with papers and pictures.  In a room where the news never stopped, and the story had to be delivered, everyone seemed frozen.  Darlene continued to make small talk, “The editor’s desk is up on the 35th, but I never go up there.” “I’m always here, Monday through Friday, right at that desk by the front door.  If you ever need anything… well, here we are,” She smiled warmly.

Darlene knocked on the door frame of the open door.  Adamas peered inside to see Jessica typing away, her back to the door.  “Finally, did you get that quote from Broyko?”  She asks as she spins around in her chair, and stops.  She is out of her chair almost instantly, coming around the desk.  “Adamas, how nice to see you again,” she smiles.   Obviously more comfortable around Meta’s than others, “You could have called up,” she says to Darlene out of the side of her mouth.  Darlene shrugs and walks backwards half way down the aisle, and soon disappears back into the maze.  “Why don’t we go to the conference room, it’s more comfortable than my office,” Jessica said as she grabbed a pad and pen from a desk they were passing by.

Jessica guided him through the WCTV news room, into a conference room in the corner.  Large leather covered chairs surrounded a huge table in the center of the room.   A large portrait of Ed the Anchor hung on one wall.  Two other walls were Glass, floor to ceiling windows.  Adamas crossed the room to look out the windows and looked out over the city.  With his enhanced vision, he could clearly make out the individual faces of people far below on the streets.  His mind wandered for a moment thinking how important each of them was to him.  From behind him Jessica said, “Is there was anything I can get you, a bottle of water perhaps?”

Adamas shook his head no, and slowly turned around.  “You asked me once, not long ago, if I’d fly you around the city,” he said quietly, “I was wondering if now would be a good time for you.”

At that she looked a little surprised, “Well, I don’t know, I mean I’d love to, but I’m kind of right in the middle of this article,” she looked back and forth between her office and Adamas, and her smile brightened.  “I’d love to,” she said,” just let me grab my purse.”

He watched as she hurried back to her office.  She quickly locked down her computer, made a quick phone call and grabbed her purse.  The buzz was there again in the office, but heads continue to pop up, glancing in his direction.  She returned and looked up at him, “So how do we do this?” she asked, “I mean I know how you do this, but how do I,” she trailed off.

From the door of the conference room, he could see a sign that read “EXIT” with an arrow toward a narrow door nearby.  He pointed to that door, “Does that go to the roof?” he asked.

“I believe so, but I’ve never been up there that way,” she replied.

“It will do.”  He said taking her hand.  He walked to the door to see stairways running up and down.  He put his arm around her waist and said, “Hold on.”  She actually pulled back a little, but she was easily bested by his strength.  As he floated into the open area in the middle of the stairway, she was drawn toward him.  Her hands quickly grabbing his arm and cape, and they began to rise, quickly.  They quickly reached the door to the roof, which had a bar across it that read, “Pushing this bar for 30 seconds will open the door and cause an alarm to sound.”

Jessica reached over and pulled a wire from the bar; smiling sheepishly “I used to come up here to smoke.” She pushed on the door and it swung open freely, no alarm sounded, and they were off.  She gripped him tightly at first, and then slowly relaxed as he gently rolled so that her weight was supported by his body.  At first, she looked only at him, but gradually she began to look around.  He stayed inside the boundaries of downtown, actually flying closer to the ground than he usually preferred, but even at this height, flying slowly, the wind whipped at her, and she shivered, goose bumps popping up on her arms.  He took his cap and gently wrapped her in it so that she was protected from the elements.

“Thanks,” she said, teeth not quite chattering.  He enveloped her with his arms, sharing his warmth, and she smiled.  He was now carrying her like someone would carry a child, and she looked around with a childlike wonder, “this is amazing,” she smiled at him.  They flew across the city, and over the bay, landing on the island where Adamas had battled the Star Destroyer.  There had been a renaissance fair here at the time it seemed.   He landed gently and set her down, but she kept his cape wrapped around her shoulders.

“Thank you again, “she said, “That is just so cool.”  “I mean I watch you Meta’s are all the time streaking around the city, almost never staying in one place long enough to talk to, but this is… Wow.”

He smiled back at her, and looked away.  He didn’t remember what it had been like the first time he’d flown.  He had awoken in that lab, and somehow just known he could.  It was effortless.  He did enjoy it though.  “There is just a freedom to it,” he said.  “Exactly,” she responded.  “I mean it’s like you picking me up, like I’m not even there, no effort.  It is like being a child again, but better.  Now I can enjoy it; when you are small you just don’t think about things like that.”

She turned back toward the bridge, “So why now, why all of the sudden do you show up with no call, no notice, and want to fly me around the city?  What do you need?” she said looking back at him.

He looked a bit surprised, “need,” he said, “nothing.  I just didn’t want to be alone right now, and I thought of you.  I don’t know why.  I don’t usually think about things like that, and I’ve never felt like I needed company before.  I’ve always been comfortable where I was.  Here, in space, on the moon, wherever.  It’s just that I remembered some things today, not clearly, but dimly, like a dream, and suddenly I felt like I was alone.”

“And you thought of me,” she asked quietly.  “We only met that once.  I mean I’ve seen you around; I saw you here after the battle, but I only talked to you that once, and you remembered.”  “I mean they always say they will, they always act like they are all that,” she shrugs and looks away again.  “But, like most men, they usually only want one thing.  I got over that a long time ago.”  She looks back, “So what did you remember?”

“A family, I think, I’m not sure.” He says, picking up a rock to throw into the bay.  “I want to remember more, but it makes me sad, not happy.  Like something happened, but I can’t quite put my finger on it.”  “We are leaving, and for the first time I can remember, I’m not excited to go, I’m nervous, like I’m going to find something out I don’t want to know.”

“Where are you going,” she asks seriously.

“I’m not sure, but we’ll be gone awhile, Dr. Arcane says time passes differently where we are going.  I’m not sure when I’ll return.”  He says throwing the rock into the bay.  “I wanted to say goodbye to someone.  For someone to know I was there, just to hope someone would care.”

“Well, this takes the cake for my strangest first date,” she smiles, “but I’d be happy to be someone for you.  I’ll think about you every day until you return, no matter how long it takes.  Try to bring me back something nice,” she says with a wink.

“I’ll see what I can do”, he smiles, “now let’s get you back to your office.  I only have a short time to get back before we must be off.”

Adamas drops Jessica off on top of the WCTV building.  He then flies into the lower atmosphere and looks down on Earth, his adopted home. “I will be back, and I will protect you.” He says.  With that, he rockets through the atmosphere, heating up like a comet on re-entry, headed for his friends, and his next adventure.

Location: Dr. Arcane’s Mystical Sanctuary

Agent America said matter-of-factly to Magus, in front of everyone: "With Pete and Doc staying behind, that makes you the Team's authority on "magic". You'll be the one least out of his element, I imagine. So, for the duration of this mission, we'll need your expertise, guidance and leadership.  How does that sit with you?" In an unmistakably posh British accent Magus responded, "Expertise? Guidance? Leadership? One would think that with such a grand lot such as this, that at least one amongst you would already hold such a position of duty and responsibility. Would it not be best to have one that you are all more au fait with, then one that you are not?" He then looked Agent America squarely in the eyes and asked with a whimsical smirk, "So which is it then; is there currently no captain at the helm, or are we conspirators resting on the slippery precipice of coup?" Agent America replied to Magus: "You're right. Question withdrawn."

A strange silence seemed to fill the room as the conversation suddenly came to an abrupt halt. Magus just stared at Agent America in a perplexed and calculating manner, as the super-spy seemed to drop the subject and prepared to move on to something else entirely. Just as Agent America turned to address another order of ‘Team’ business, Magus looked slyly at him and spoke once again, “Well aren’t we the clever dog.”

"Thanks," replied Agent America without missing a beat. He continued speaking to the Team.

"We have useful Intel on the Tarot Masters:

"Mindstorm: Psionics, telepathy.
"Ion: Lightning powers and Non-corporealness [or whatever the government's terminology for the identification of meta-abilities would call that]
"Emerald: Telekinesis. Possible Psionic.
"Terra-rizer: Thinks he's a druid who's bonded with the element of Earth.
"Supernova: Fire, flight, Adaptation and Invulnerability  [or whatever the government's terminology for the identification of meta-abilities would call those]
"Bulwark: Strong, tough, armored.
"Mother Superior: "Magic" helmet, shield, weapon.

"In case we encounter them, you should each decide which one you'd have the best chance of defeating. You all know your own powers best and how to use them most effectively. Mindstorm will be my target. If we have a week in the Domain, we'll be able to share our abilities with Cure and Magus, and vice versa, then."

Shaking his head slightly at the exchange between Magnus and the Team's newly appointed leader, DarkStar speaks up in a deep rumbling voice before anyone can move. "I think it's time we, and I include myself in that we, put aside the practice of fighting one on one versus our opponents. We need to start working as a Team ... in teams. For instance three of the Team flies, four if you count what your bag of tricks is capable of Agent. That suggest to me we should be using a buddy system in combat. Two sets of two fliers and a ground team of me and .. uhm Harvey. I think until we are all acclimated to each it might be better if we team a veteran with each of the newer Team members. All four of you fliers have ranged attacks. I'd suggest each team work together versus one opponent at a time. Don't stop until you put that opponent down and move to the next. As a general rule go after soft targets first. Once they are down that frees more firepower to be concentrated against the tougher targets."

"Elwood ... Harvey, I think we can make a good Anvil to the rest of the Team's hammer. With your tricks and my toughness we should be able to delay the opposition’s big guns long enough for the rest of the Team to join us. I have faith in you."

Taking a deep breath, Joshua look each Team member in the eye. "It's up to you, but this is going to probably be our deadliest mission yet. The fate of the world and the life of our friend’s granddaughter rest solely in our hands. No pressure,"

Agent America was pleasantly surprised at Rose's words. He didn't disagree with any of it, including the buddy system idea which could be finalized in the Domain.

He nodded, "Agreed."

As 'The Team' meeting broke up, Magus spoke telepathically with DarkStar directly via his 'Amulet of the Arcane', "I noticed you shaking your head earlier as Agent America and I spoke to one another . . . was there something that you didn't approve of?"

With a heavy mental sigh Joshua maintains the private mental contact with the Team's newest member. "Not at all. Welcome to the Team."

The uncanny imposter disguised himself as Ion of the Tarot Masters; He'd asked his teammates to refer to him by that name as well.  His suit was rigged to show lightning sparks from either hand but only one hand had his pistol hidden it. He had worked with the Craftsman to create the optical illusion of immateriality over his suit. While he wouldn’t be non-corporeal, it would appear he was.

All had their preparations in order. Strangely Elwood was carrying a bunch of bananas. He didn’t know why other than Harvey told him to.

Dr Avery was dressed as Dr Arcane and was sitting. He called The Cure and Adamas over to him. “The Cure has the power to heal others. I will assist her in healing Adamas. I will get your restorative powers past his invulnerability and increase your power tenfold.”

Together The Cure and Dr. Arcane fired unique rays that meet and merged with Adamas. He was healed of his injuries and surprisingly he remembered something vague of his life before he was found by Earthlings. He hadn’t always been a man of magic. He had simply been a man, not a human, but a man. He had been chosen to be a Guardian and infused with magic.  Magic fueled his might and his being. It was his strength and his weakness. Because he had been made with magic he could be unmade by it as well. That is why his invulnerability did not stop magic.

Adamas looked at Magus and felt a brotherhood with him. While magic powered them in different ways it was still magic that powered them both.

Next The Cure and Dr. Arcane healed DarkStar.  When it was done all he remembered was that he had forgotten to give Trish the bonus he had promised her last year.

Dr. Arcane had The Team move their assigned positions in the room. Eve, David, Daniel, and Samson were all stationed in defensive positions around the room. Outside the mansion, the members of Safeguard were patrolling the grounds. Pietor stood behind Dr. Arcane. Together the two Masters of the Mystic Arts performed the incantation.

Pietor spoke, “We will maintain contact with you while you are there. You all have your amulets; including the one we gave to The Cure, safeguard those. It is the only way for you to contact us and Earth’s dimension. We will open the portal for you to leave and when you contact us we will reopen for your return.  Be sure to do this from a safe location otherwise whoever you’re fighting with will be able to follow you here.”

Before they entered the portal, he'd gird himself for what was about to happen, mentally run through his checklist, and say to the Team with grim determination, "Let's go get Donna."

As Pietor provided final instructions Dr. Arcane opened the Portal and The Team went through. With their amulets they listened to their final instructions.”

“You will be met by a guide. He will mention that he knew an Earthling that carried sweets. You will ask if he would like to have one again and if he would like it peeled. You will peel a banana and give it to him. Only after he eats it will you know he is your guide. He will lead you to Occult’s lair.”

“Don’t assume everyone is your enemy or they will become so.”

“Don’t assume everyone is your ally or you will be betrayed.”

“DO NOT use your real names. Names have power with magic. Earth is only a partial magic realm but the Domain is a full magic realm. Remember this.”

“That goes double for you DarkStar.”

“Harvey is not his real name so continue to use it.”

“In the Domain, everyone will call Harvey’s Companion by the name of Scatterbrain and you will all call me …”

“Doctor Apocalypse”

As ‘Ion’ stepped through first, he started to explain the differences between the Domain and Earth he had learned from Dr. Apocalypse. “The Domain’s atmosphere has the following effects on humans. It is more draining to move and use our powers. It does have stronger recuperate effects so we heal quicker than normal.

{GM Note: In game terms: All actions cost +2 power points over and above its normal costs. Normal healing takes place every hour instead of once per day. Adaptation will negate both the positive and negative effects of the atmosphere}

‘Ion’ said. “The Domain’s gravity is 1.89 Gs, which is 1.89 times Earth’s gravity.”

{GM Note: When I stated that the Domain would not affect the character sheets, I did that without reviewing the module first. I was wrong, I am sorry. There will be slight modifications to Agility, Carrying Capacity, and HtH. Please note the changes for the characters.

Adamas – Agility no change, Carrying Cap is 3,666, and HtH is 1d12
Agent America – Agility no change, Carrying Cap is 1,097, and HtH is 1d10
DarkStar – Agility is 11, Carrying Cap is 27,696, and HtH is 3d10
Elwood – Agility no change, Carrying Cap is 53, and HtH is 1d2
Harvey – He is a magical or imaginary being so his ‘stats’ are unaffected.
Magus – Agility no change, Carrying Cap is 852, and HtH is 1d8
The Cure – Agility no change, Carrying Cap is 85, and HtH is 1d3}

‘Ion’ said, “The soil and rocks in the Domain are composed of diamond hard crystal and the native flora share these characteristics.”

Magus pulled out a scroll. He shared that it had been given to him by Dr. Arcane. It would show where they were in the Domain. It would also show where magic was being performed within the area. By the very nature of magic its user cannot hide itself from other knowledgeable in its craft. Dr. Arcane’s Sanctuary was never hidden from other mages. It was his magical power that protected him and the mansion. As he weakened so did his defenses. Hidden Sanctuaries only offer protection from the non user or non believer.
Looking over the scroll, Magus saw there are several magical sanctuaries showing. He explained to the others the need for the guide was not to find the hidden but to take them to the right sanctuary first.

At that time 4 birds flew near them. They look exactly like a rave except that they had glowing red eyes.

The Team heard Dr Arcane through the Amulet, “These flying creatures are known as Devil Ravens, they refer to themselves as Davens.

The one nearest them opened it mouth and spoke. The Team was in shock to see that it had teeth.

It said, “I once knew an Earthling who carried sweets.”

Great issue Tom!
Nacht Island is the safe place they went to. Hahah! Perfect.
Pietor Apokolips! You got me.

I assume we don't know who Doc Apoc is, even though the Destroyers exist, correct?

Lots of IC stuff to follow.

Best,
Jeff / Agent America
------------------------------------------------
GM

Yes, Doc Apoc did not exist until this issue. AA and The Team are now forever apart of his origin in the Megalopolis Universe.

His teaming up with the Destroyers (if that ever happens) will be in the future.
Glad you like
Tom

Gentlemen, ladies, I think the sh!t just hit the fan

Good Times

Too much tequila?!? I'm not really familiar with the words that you're using - is this another language or something? Could use you this phrase in a sentence, because I'm just not understanding it =/

LMAO - excellent

Adamas

That's the name I was going to go with...

Really, this was a good issue.  Nice tie up on the issues.

Very cool to not have to go into combat in another dimension where probably everyone will be able to abuse my weakness with no hit points.

I'm not sure what to post, but I think Adamas will go by the moniker "Diamond Jim." ;-) or DJ for short.

Agent America

OOC: First thoughts...

IC:
Agent America listened to Doc Arcane's long, sad story and his face fell. He'd yell at the old wizard about lack of security later. Now, he put a reassuring hand on Doc's shoulder.

America was angry with how things went down with Catalyst, but there'd be time to hash that over later as well.

The newly crowned, reluctant Team leader would make proper introductions with the Cure, Magus and the FISHmen. "Nice work back there," he said to the Cure, extending his big hand for a shake. "You helped us out of a tight spot."

During the four hours of prep time, he focused on the job at hand instead. "Petey, give us a primer on this place we're headed to. We need all the Intel we can get." If Pietor was too busy, he'd hit Doc's library, and share whatever info he found with the Team.

The uncanny imposter would also attempt to disguise himself as one of the Tarot Masters, Ion (or whichever one you think would be easiest to duplicate, Tom). He'd take his name as well. Although another idea for a name came to him, but he rejected it immediately as being as ridiculous as "Doctor Apocalypse."

He'd say matter-of-factly to Magus, in front of everyone: "With Pete and Doc staying behind, that makes you the Team's authority on “magic”. You'll be the one least out of his element, I imagine. So, for the duration of this mission, we'll need your expertise, guidance and leadership.  How does that sit with you?"

Before they entered the portal, he'd gird himself for what was about to happen (activate Willpower defense), mentally run through his checklist, and say to the Team with grim determination, "Let's go get Donna."

DarkStar

Hey Tom/Guys

OOC: Just some quick notes before I slip into the Commanders persona and write up his initial response and actions to the HD action packed Issue.

If DarkStar’s snide comment about keeping Samhain locked up this time upset the FISH agents they didn’t let it show

I’d like to think Joshua would be more professional than that. He might challenge the agency responsible for keeping Samhain incarcerated to do a better job, but at the same time would offer whatever help he could to make it happen. Rose might be as subtle as a freight train but he’s also a facilitator whose highest priority is the protection of the family, friends and the planet – probably in that order.

The Supreme Governor of the Talons of the Jade Emperor is Son of Heaven

I hope we can revisit this incident later. Until then he’ll report the incident to Kevin with the idea of adding the information into MEDUSA’s files on the area and organization.

The gemstone activated the portal against Pietor’s will.

Seriously good thing we didn’t RP this. Pietor might have a cracked skull. Can’t imagine why DS distrusted this guy since Quest Issue #1(Yeah I'm sure he's a great guy. Just like the Floop Brothers. He's using the name A-p-o-c-a-l-y-p-s-e. Not a good sign in my book.  lol-wink)

{GM Note: Please let me know if you bring anything beyond what is on your PC’s character sheet.}

We’re going to the Domain? Can I go pick up that Diatanium sword I’ve been working on in the lab now?

. . . all he remembered was that he had forgotten to give Trish the bonus he had promised her last year.

That’s not his fault. Cybil was supposed to remind. I think she was going through a jealous phase.

You all have your amulets; including the one we gave to The Cure, safeguard those. It is the only way for you to contact us and Earth’s dimension

I’ll bring this up IC also, but OOC I think using the amulets in the magic realm might give the Team’s presence away. Was wondering what the other Players thought about initially relying on the comm-badges? They wouldn’t help when communications with Doc was needed (DS will have to work on inter-dimension comm-tech I guess) but in the magic realm they might be more secure than the amulets? Give it some thought.

“That goes double for you DarkStar.”

Ouch, Really? What? You get bored with shooting FISH (lol) in a barrel?

*************************************************************************************

Holy Cow Tom could you pack anymore into that sucker of what? Great read and awesome set up for so many things to come. I’ll have a list of questions later DS will need answered before he preps for the acquisition and extraction of the target. Gee … with Doctor Apocalypse as our back up why do I get the feeling this is going to make Khyber Pass look like a bake sale? (lol)

Later Guys

I was thinking about this - the whole 'don't use your real name' thing - wouldn't our superhero names suffice as 'not our real name'? For example if Magus used Magus wouldn't that be safe? Magus after all isn't his real name - I would think that using our superhero names would be ok - no? Thoughts everyone -

If someone as powerful as DarkStar needs a sword to go to The Domain then you can officially consider yourself advised Tom, Magus will be bringing military grade body armor and a pocket-sized howitzer. I just hope the bananas that Elwood ( the weakest of all 'The Teams' members by far ) is bringing with him are of the armor-piercing, high-explosive variety =/

Tom, am I correct in assuming that Magus was given an amulet as well?

John, I was actually thinking that using the amulets in such a magical place would go unnoticed, if anything I was hoping that their functionality might somehow be bolstered in such a place. Using technology in such a place on the other hand might be like a raising a big bright red flag above our heads - just an opinion though.

OOC:
Goals for the four hours of prep:
1) Learn as much about the Domain as possible from Doc, Pietor or the library
2) Create Ion disguise.
3)  Prep all the gear on his character sheet. The Omni-pistol will be set for Lightning if he can pull off the Ion disguise. All other stuff is as per his default.

These were all things that could only be done here, on Earth, so he's gotta do them now.

Team interaction and tactical planning could be done in the Domain, starting in four hours and one minute from now.

Crazy Question - why would he crack his skull? =/

Old Pete suppressed DarkStar's teleport power without asking first time they met. How would you feel about someone who didn't know you to shackle you before meeting his boss. Might make you a bit nervous. Recently he's taken to using the artifacts without discussing it with the Team who fought and bled for them while he was safely on the sidelines. You just don't go around slipping on arcane artifacts for the fun of it. In his origins DarkStar has a well written deep seated distrust of authority type figures who think they know what’s best and leave it to the little guy to suffer the consequences. Pete has always come across as one of those guys who thinks he knows more than everyone else and has been acting on that. He is not Doc Arcane, he has never been trusted by DS and here he is again trying something before Doc has had a chance to express is approval (as far as DS knows) so Yeah if we had role-played it Id have had DS try and stop him - cracking skull as a an expression but fact if need be. I’d have and him do the same with the Cape if DS had had a chance.

If it was the first time that he used it and he wasn't fully prepared for all the power it possessed, why would DarkStar assault him so savagely and violently? This almost reminds me of the whole 'a very dark place . . . or worse' thing that came up with Catalyst. You've always mentioned how professionally DarkStar behaves, to be honest, this doesn't sound very professional to me at all - or am I missing something? I know DarkStar has an interesting back-story and a very complex personality ( which you relate very well ) and I have to admit I'm still struggling with trying to figure him out - or is that by design? Does DarkStar constantly 'switch up' his behavior to throw people off?

The above explains most of it. Keep in mind my OOC comments are not the same as DarkStar's response or actions. My OOC comments are off the cuff and not to be taken seriously I would hope. The IC comments are DarkStar’s and I usually try to keep the internal dialogue very distinct from his vocal communications. Sorry if the distinction between those gets confusing sometimes. I'll try to improve on that. The Destroyer debacle aside I think if you read the back issues you'll find accomplishing the mission is always the most important goal for DarkStar. Often he has had to pass ip getting into the thickest part of the fight because his teleport power was more useful to the mission than his strength. If we had the Cape scenario to do all over again I would have just had DarkStar teleport the power rod to the plant and insisted on his plan to use the Flower Delivery truck idea he presented, but we didn't have a clear leader then and I’ve always done everything I can to encourage all the other players to be more extroverted. I know my own post dominated the landscape for quite a long while and I was afraid I was swamping everyone else, so I've tried to back off on that. Maybe I should have pressed forward, I don't know and it's too late to change now. But to the beginning the OOC  the IC (internal and verbal) need to all be considered separately when you decide what to think about the character sorry if the OOC is over the top sometimes - it’s just meant in fun. Well at least that’s the intention

DarkStar

Hey Tom/Guys

OOC: Tom, feel free to use what you want. I responded as if we were actually playing together. I understand if you feel a need to edit it due to space or time constraints, but I will consider these to have been DarkStar’s IC actions and responses under these circumstances.

<DarkStar IC: responses and actions>

Adamas landed next to DarkStar. He was carrying Catalyst’s body.
“Damn it Adamas, what happened? Did one of the Tarot Masters do this? I told him and Harvey to stay clear of the combat.”

DSA and FISH agents were quickly on the scene.
Commander Rose is rough but business like in expressing his concern over Samhain’s escape. He apologizes to FISH for leaving him in the care of CHESS after their last battle, not realizing FISH’s specialty in dealing with the paranormal, he hopes they have better facilities for keeping him incarcerated. He offers the technical services of his company at cost if they are needed and hopes to coordinate the possibility of building a reserved holding facility. He carefully points out the economic benefits and the increased safety factor to the non-meta agents who generally are responsible for transporting captured villains.

The Talons employee metas … commander of his troops is 'Beautiful Memory of Celestial Laughter. She is a powerful Psionic
Joshua focuses on directing his thoughts solely on Dr. Arcane. “Doc if that’s a taste of what can be done to me by someone like Occult, I’m not sure it’s safe for me to be around the Team if we come against someone like her.”

Pietor explained. “Some months ago, a small golden casket was unearthed at the archeological dig of a 2,000 year old tell in Egypt
“Pietor? The earliest records I can find of the Domain only date back to 1334. Just how long has the Domain been attempting to invade Earth and why aren’t the Chosen involved in this fight? It seems to be what they exist for?” Listening further he asks one more question. “This … ancient alchemical transubstantiation … How do we stop it? Just grabbing the … ” Angrily thinking of Donnah in the clutches of Occult. Looking at Doc Joshua hesitates but takes a breath and pushes forward. “ … reagents can’t be enough. They’ll just grab more helpless victims and do the same.”

“I am sorry I have failed you . . . “
“That’s bull Doc and you know it. There’s only one reason for this. Ch’andarra you call her, it? She sounds like one sick 'twist' to me Doc. I swear Doc, whatever it takes we’ll get Donnah back.”

As The Team fought off and defeated the protectors of the alcove, Pietor placed the gem to his forehead where it grated itself irrevocably into his flesh and into his soul.
Smashing one of the stone-like gargoyles within his reach against the temple walls DarkStar looks around and sees the last one leaping toward Pietor’s back just as the mage raises the gem to his head. “Pietor NO!” *whoump* Choosing between stopping Pietor and stopping the creature is no choice. DarkStar combat jumps between the gargoyle and mage shielding the sorcerer with his own body. Joshua slams both his fist through the stone-like creatures body shattering it to bits. Bruised, bloodied the blue brawler turns to the mage as the Portal opens. “Damn it Pietor … why?”

They were told to take four hours to gather the supplies they would need for spending a week in the Domain.
{GM Note: Please let me know if you bring anything beyond what is on your PC’s character sheet.}

OOC: Okay this part might be a bit too complex to suitably RP in my opinion so I’ll just throw it out there.
a)    - Do we have hard information on target location and the op-forces?
b)    - Do we have need of specialized environmental equipment?
c)    - Is this to be a fast snatch and grab or a covert infiltration?
d)    - How does the Domain effect our and the Tarot Masters powers?
I assume Cybil will be of less use without access to satellite feeds and the internet. In Issue #1 I started to use micro-cameras before you had Cybil hack the Chinese military satellite. Is there a chance of Rose cobbling together a number of StarCorp equivalents to the Huntsman’s remote-cams?

<DarkStar IC: response> Before leaving to acquire the items he’d need for this Quest, Joshua channeled his thoughts privately to Dr. Arcane. “Merlin needed Arthur and Excalibur, Gandalf needed Aragorn and Anduril. I pledge myself as your Champion. Cybil and I will bring Donnah home or die in the trying. I swear.”

OOC: Rose will acquire the items he feels he needs based on the answer to the above questions. While gone he will also attempt to contact Solomon of the Chosen and if he can contact him explain the situation and ask he keep an eye on Doc. If the Chosen are unable or unwilling Joshua will also attempt to have his people hire Safeguard to provide for Doc and Pietor’s physical safety while the Team is away. If they’re available this hopefully will mend some fences with the Floop Brothers and give Doc and Pietor time to evacuate the mansion if need be. StarCorp personnel are to be put on a heightened security alert while Joshua is away. He’ll also do what he can to provide security for Kevin, Sarissa, and the Professor. I’, sure I’m missing something and if do I’ll adjust when I send you DarkStar’s mission package.

Until Later

<DarkStar IC>  With a heavy mental sigh Joshua maintains the private mental contact with the Team's newest member. "Not at all. Welcome to the Team."
--------------------------------------------
DarkStar and GM

a)    - Do we have hard information on target location and the op-forces?

No, Dr. Arcane has not been back since he rescued Donnah the last time

Fair enough but any information garnered from that time is more knowledge than the Team currently has at their disposal. He wouldn't' be DarkStar if he wasn't trying to get all the pre-mission intel possible.

b)    - Do we have need of specialized environmental equipment?

No, While there will be differences, nothing that will cause you to be wounded or hurt by just breathing or standing. Other words, You don't automatically lose 1d4 of HP or PP per day there or anything like that.

Good to know thanks - I was picturing the Domain as some sort of Dante's Inferno for some reason.

c)    - Is this to be a fast snatch and grab or a covert infiltration?

Neither, It is more like European explorers entering the Amazon or Africa for the first time or a D&D wilderness quest.

Okay have to admit I'm confused on that answer. If I had it right the "mission" is to grab Donnah and stop the Transmutation Ceremony. That sounds like an Exfiltration and Sabotage operation. We can go about that one of two ways. We can either be Overt (Delta Force) or Covert (James Bond). The first requires avoiding the indigs and the second blending in. From the sound of your answer we're going to be Overt. In which case we need to acquire and strike the target as fast as possible once we enter the Domain, before they have a chance to improve what I assume will already be formidable defenses.

Dang I really need to quit storyboarding - my bad.

d)    - How does the Domain effect our and the Tarot Masters powers?

The Domain will not alter a PC's Character Sheet or Change V&V rules.

Not exactly true  DarkStar won't be able to use GPS feeds and the such to teleport safely around the planet. He'd still attempt a blind teleport if the situation called for it, but I'm betting he'll have to rely mainly on line of sight and places he has visited once he gets there.

Thanks Tom
John

PS: "Doc is the food compatible with human anatomy? I don't look forward to a week of K-rations."

Agent America smiled from hearing from Adamas that the cavalry had arrived. "Nice timing," he said to the Cure

IC: She looks over to him (not knowing his name) and says "Well timing is everything Ca...") and stops herself from making a comment that may not be well received and attends to Elwood.

DarkStar

Hey Guys

Ive been taking some PC lessons from Tom recently and thought I'd share a part of the conversation as it might be useful to others as we prepare our characters before we walk through the Stargate into an alien dimension.

You are also thinking in too military of terms. This isn't a military game. In game terms you are going to be dropped in a place where you are completely lost and have no idea of which way to go. You will be met by a guide who will take you to Occult's lair. It is going to feel very D&Dish.

I admit to having rarely not been the GM or co-GM in almost any extended campaign I've played so being "just" a PC has been a new experience for me. Since a kid I have approach all the games I played with a tactical mind set. Started with chess when I was 7 or 8 and it's just the way my brain works. However I definitely can approach this with a D&D flavor. I guess that makes DarkStar new codename "Ranger" but without the sword (lol) hmm maybe Troll would be better (lol) Nah, I'll go with Ranger.

You're goal is to get Donnah and stop the spell.

Now I'd substitute mission for goal (lol) but oh yeah anything that distract or gets between DS and the Team's goal is toast.

Overt or Covert is possible. One method is easier than the other.
If you want to go covert and have Joshua attempt to sleep with Occult (James Bond style) that will be very difficult but It is possible.

Roflmao, omg that cracked me up.

You might want to have DarkStar talk with AA's plan on dressing as Ion because it does sound like he is going Covert.

Hey Jeff I'm curious should I get a Terra-rizer costume for DS (jk) Hey can ya give us a hint what you're thinking here? Happy to play along just curious what ya got up your sleeve?

Hey Jeff I'm just curious, you sound pretty sure the Tarot Masters will be there? I'm not saying there not, they likely are given the tease Tom gave us, but isn't it also possible Chandarra and Occult  are using Donnah to lure us into a trap, and at the same time stripping Dr. Arcane of his finest Defenders? The Tarot Masters could still be on Earth preparing to assault the mansion again but this time without the mighty DarkStar to stop them (LOL)

Wow - Tom's right I do think of all this stuff in terms of military tactics. Never mind the Big Blue worry wart in the corner, he'll be ready to go.

I have to say though, ever since Tom mentioned a D&D setting I've been getting this picture of the Fellowship being ambushed in the mines of Moria, There's a Balrog awaiting us in the Domain, I can feel it. DS had a bad feeling before the Cape adventure and you all called hum paranoid, well another one of those premonitions is starting to creep in.  (lol)

OOC:
Not at all. It's just a chance. But the preparation for that possibility costs me nothing, and may have a benefit.

I like DS's idea of hiring Safeguard to watch Doc. Also, Doc should vacate these premises for a secret location. His cover's totally blown.

I can feel it. DS had a bad feeling before the Cape adventure and you all called hum paranoid, well another one of those premonitions is starting to creep in. (lol)

If you're always paranoid, or always optimistic for that matter, odds are you'll eventually be right. :)

The Cure

Manslaughter was caught between the Latarium blasts and the Alien's Power blasts of which 6 of the 10 shots hit. The Revenant was encased in an energy orb created from a mixture of green/silver Latarium and yellow/red Mystic Energy. Nothing but Manslaughter's ashes remained when the energy orb dissipated.

OOC: Tom did we just kill Manslaughter? If so are the Cure and Adamas guilty of breaking the superhero code?

IC: As the energy orb dissipated and all she can see is Manslaughter's ashes the Cure fells sick thinking she just helped to kill someone. Stunned at what she has done she watches the rest of the action unfold then thinks to herself "Elwood. I have to check on Elwood." She looks about and it looks like everything is well in hand and says "looks like you boys can clean things up I'll grab Mr. Dowd."
-----------------------------------------------
GM

In Manslaughter case, the answer is no.  He was a revenant meaning he was the dead raised for a purpose (usually revenge killings). Whoever raised him might decide to raise him again.

If you want, We can role-play The Cure expressing this concern with the DSA agent and I will have FISH step in to explan why it isn't a code violation.

Thanks
Tom

The newly crowned, reluctant Team leader would make proper introductions with the Cure, Magus and the FISHmen. "Nice work back there," he said to the Cure, extending his big hand for a shake. "You helped us out of a tight spot."

of breaking the superhero code?

OOC: You know I was wondering when someone else was going to ask this question? It wouldn't bother DarkStar but I'd imagine Adamas would have all kind of angst over it. Wow you guys must have really poured it on. With a fair amount of hp and pp those guys should be pretty hard to kill. Great example of what team work can do though (lol)

The Cure

IC: After leaving Adamas, The Cure returns to the roof top where she had left Elwood. She looks down at him and wishes he could see the smile on her face. She just won her first battle and would love if her dad could have seen it and let her know it was alright or not. She still can't shake that feeling that what she did was wrong. Bad guy or not, undead or not this can't be right. Maybe a short talk with Elwood can make her see things in a better light. In a very warm voice as she hovers above Mr. Dowd do you need a lift? I'll only charge you the chance to talk."

Harvey and Elwood

IC:
"Thank you Mary.  Your fee is my pleasure," Elwood replied and continued with a mild tone, "That was quite a show you engaged in down there.  Harvey has explained to me that those... men with the chainsaws were probably quite dangerous.  I think they needed a good bowl of oatmeal." A wink and a smirk was given as Elwood stood and made himself available for the descent.  With only a slightly more serious voice, he observed, "I hope our host isn't too put out by all the mess that was made of his lovely library."

"Mary, Harvey here is my dearest friend." Elwood always enjoys introducing people to Harvey and this time was no exception since he took an immediate liking to the young nurse.

Elwood's mild tone, the wink and the funny little smirk on his face made Mary feel safe and warm. It was very comforting. She seems to let her guard down around him. As they made their way down she could see the damage."Yes I do believe oatmeal would have helped them. Maybe with some brown sugar?" Trying hard not to laugh. Her tone switches when once again seeing the blown out wall to the library "Oh my your friends do make quite a mess don't they?"

DarkStar

Hey Guys

OOC: I was re-reading a few things and I was struck with an idea. So here it goes

<DarkStar IC: actions and responses>

Between attempting to ask the Chosen for assistance and hire Safeguard with a ridiculous signing bonus, an idea danced in the shadows of Joshua's overactive hyper-intellect. Suddenly, while working with his most skilled technicians to build a handful of devices for Cybil's use in a world without internet and orbiting satellites the will of wisp finally showed itself.

"Cybil play back Doctor Arcane's information on the subject designated Ch'andarra. Approximately three minutes and twelve point seven seconds into the mission brief."

Almost immediately Cybil projects the images and sounds of a holo-recording of the Team's meeting.

"But, try though she might, Ch’andarra could not bring herself to slay me. At length, she was force to comprehend what I had sensed dimly all long: She was obsessed not with vengeance, but with a burning hatred that was the opposite side of love!"

With the last word of "love" still ringing in DarkStar's ears, he is already activating the comm-link to Agent America. I'd use the amulets but I'm not sure how Doc would respond to what I'm about to suggest. No use taking the chance of upsetting or offending him if AA doesn't think the idea has any merit.

"Agent this is Rose. I wanted to run an idea by you. I think you might want to prepare a different or at least another disguise. If Occult is really some incarnation of this Ch'andarra character that Doc has so much history with, maybe we should ask Magnus if he'd be willing to pose as Dr. Arcane. She could have attacked us in the library. She could have had her agent attack Doc at any time but chose to slip away instead. I could be off base but it could also provide us with an invaluable edge next time we run into her."

"Think about it. Let me know what you think. I'll keep you informed on what luck I have getting either the Chosen or Safeguard to keep an eye on Doc while we're gone. Rose out."

OOC: What the heck it’s a long shot but I thought I'd throw it out there.

Regards
John

OOC;

Sounds good.

Tom, can AA disguise Magus as Doc as well?

Kevin, would Magus go for this?

DarkStar

Hey Tom

What’s up buddy? Only have laptop internet access for a few minutes. Trying to keep in touch using the iPhone – I just can’t seem to get that to work as well as I’d like yet.

<DarkStar: OOC> I assume you’ll address the results of his actions in the next issue. As I haven’t heard from you in a bit, I did want to make sure I had been clear to Joshua’s goals.

1 - Contact someone to assist/guard Doc while they were gone. Joshua is worried the Tarot Masters might strike while the Team is away. He’ll offer access to the Orbs to Solomon as an enticement if he feels the it might tip the scales from a maybe to a yes.

2 - Same as above but attempting to hire Safeguard as security for the mansion’s perimeter . A signing bonus and favored status with Manpower to qualified applicants who might like such as assignment.

3 - Working with his best technicians to cobble together an improved version of the hovering mini-cam snatched during the Dragon issues. This was supposed to have had a higher priority earlier, but the Ares satellite put it on a back burner. Time to pull put a Inventing and/or Luck point (???)

4 - Have the security chief slap together backpacks equipped with enough food and equipment to survive 10days in the wilderness. Rations, compasses, etc. Can bypass gear ropes that the Team has no real need of. Will want 2 packages of industrial strength zip ties to “detain” potential hostiles.

At some point he needs to invent a device that can secure an individual like Behemoth or Mountain Man after they have been defeated. If only CHESS would loan him a couple power nullifiers (lol)

Magus

OOC: Based on his Weakness I would say that he wouldn't go for this - it would probably go against his sense of fair play and chivalry I think - Great idea though =D

IC: With a look of confidence on his face and a sense of stoic strength in his posture; Magus responds, "Although I commend your resourcefulness and creativity gentlemen, I would rather confront our enemy head on and without deception. We need to send a message, and that message should be clear . . . our enemy will soon know the price of their boldness, and it will be my face they see when they do."
