Quest: Listen to Me! - Issue 40

Location: Jacco’s Village Hideout on Easter Island

The battle between the Guardians, the Tarot Masters, and the Natural Forces raged over ownership of the Soul Scythe. Jacco and Thunderhead are beneath the hut in the hidden underground of Easter Island. The rest of them battle in and around Jacco’s hut.

[39] Adamas slowly rose into the sky... "Super Nova," He said in a booming voice, powered by his enhanced lungs, "I believe we have unfinished business."

Adamas attempted to take some of the "Heat" off of Red Hawk, Using a technique he learned fighting the Star Devourer, he grabbed a large boulder, and attempted to plow into Super Nova with as much speed as he can. Super Nova swooped down and to the right causing Adamas to miss with his attack.

[33] Jack's sharp, blue eyes spied the scroll pouch on Lord Noman's side.  The evil wizard used a scroll to enslave Jack's elemental kin!  But no longer!

Jack flew up into the thick fog, to disappear from view. He floated down silently behind Lord Noman, trying to sneak up on him unseen!

Noman didn’t notice Jack's presence, then sly, nimble Jack secretly pickpocket the contents of the scroll pouch, leaving the empty pouch on Noman's hip!

{GM Note: Successful skills roll}

[32] Red Hawk concentrated his will focusing on keeping his meta-systems online as he was buffeted again and again by the Guardian's foes. The fiery blast of power and energies dissipate just in time for him to see Jacco follow Thunderhead down into the underground ruins. Focusing his thoughts to Clark through the amulet, "Powers get back here. Xiang Liang says we need you" . . . "Watch out, Jacco's on your tail."

Red Hawk's android sensors picked up the frosty force of nature on his right, starting to move through the fog behind Lord Noman. Hoping the elemental spirit has a plan, he set about protecting the staff and finishing off the villains of the tarot. "Noman your leader has ran and your fellow sorcerer is down. Time for you to follow suit." Focusing on activating his vibrational defenses Hawk swooped past Quarry trying to turn Noman away from Jack Frost. Still using the advantage of the high ground over his remaining ground bound opponent, Red Hawk fired a single blast of vibrational energy into the flank of Lord Noman. "Adamas ... We have the Scythe. You're our fastest flyer.  Maybe you should take it to Dr. Arcane and return as soon as possible."

Noman rolled with the damage and yell at Red Hawk, “I am the leader of the Tarot Masters! That fool is not my leader! I serve one master, the master of the Domain and the true master of the Earth.”

{GM Note: Red Hawk could not dual attack because he is holding the Soul-Scythe. The rules for our PBeM is one action per turn but if the character’s agility is 15 or higher he can make 2 simultaneous attacks during 1 action if the character has the way to perform the attacks simultaneously (at a cost of 2 PP in addition to power PR requirements). For Red Hawk his attacks have been focused using his hands/arms. At this moment one of those hands is holding an object which isn’t a part of his normal fighting style. He has never practiced firing a vibe blast while holding object. He is also vibrating his body as a defense. Red Hawk has to focus on vibrating the Soul-Scythe too otherwise it would drop from his grasp. This ruling is acknowledgement that the rules allow a character to vibrate through solid objects, which Red Hawk did in an earlier issue.}

[26] Seeing that his leader had escaped with the Scythe, CX turned on his attackers.

"My weakness?  Lady, you must be oblivious..."

CX reached out with his magnetics to use the armor and weapon to squeeze her.

He was successful in seizing Mommy Duperior’s armor. The metal creaked as it collapse, breaking ribs of the Tarot Master’s Judgment avatar. She shrieked in pain as her protection was used against her

After his attack he realized his leader was in trouble.  Over the amulet: "Anyone who can, get Red Hawk out of there!  They've got him in a crossfire!!!"

{GM Note: Grabbing Mother Superior and smashing her against Lord Norman are two separate actions which cannot be performed simultaneously so it was not allowed as a dual attack. There are two different types of grabbing attacks. One is to grab and hold thus preventing the opponent any freedom of movement. The other is to grab and inflict pain with the grab. This attack inflicts damage but does not prevent the movement of limbs, no freedom of movement restriction. It was the latter attack type that I interrupted CX action to be}

[25] Starbolt directed his statements to The Natural Forces, "Please, can you not see that what Jacco and his cronies have in mind will only bring destruction to this planet, and leave it uninhabitable for all of us including you. Tell me you can see past his snake-oil  salesman presentation. Join us and we can put a stop to this before it is too late."

The Natural Forces were stunned by the charisma of the Stellar Sentinel. They marveled at his regal bearing as they pondered his words. With the scroll no longer in Lord Noman’s possession they were able to make their own choices and they decided to join the Guardians.

{GM Notes: Successful Presence skill use}

[22] The Black Orchid, hearing the call to protect Red Hawk erected a cylinder of darkness around him, so he couldn’t be seen from the outside, but Red Hawk could the top of the cylinder. He had flown down to 120 feet to be able to blast Lord Noman. The cylinder was 210 feet long from the ground upwards. Red Hawk was exactly in the middle.

[22] Coriolis said, “For Earth and the Guardians!” as she circled around and flew toward Lord Noman. Unleashing a hurricane of wind at the Tarot Master Leader, she struck him hard, he grunted in pain. He lost hold of his tarot card deck and the cards blew away. Lord Noman watched in horror as his beloved deck was scattered to the wind.

{GM Note: Coriolis rolled a natural 1 for a critical hit. When I rolled on a crit table it was damaging a device. It was a 50/50 chance of either his magic wand or deck of cards}

[21] Lord Noman roared in rage, “You dare attack your master! I will scatter you across the winds that make you up!” He used his wand to change the surrounding weather. He attempted to summon a hurricane. The weather changed but he could not use it to damage Coriolis.

{GM Note: The current environment is how Hurricane but Lord Noman missed with his attack on Coriolis}

[20] Conflagration said, “For Earth and the Guardians!” He fired a flame blast at Sister Indigo. The flames splashed against her force field screen. The flames severely weakened screen but it held.

[20] Super Nova said, “Indeed, alien we do have unfinished business. It is time I finished you off for good!” The fired dual flame blasts at Adamas. Both struck him hard as the flame overwhelming his invulnerability. Adamas was able to roll with some of the damage but was hurt as well. He was still conscious and able to fight.

{GM Note: First blast did 20 damage points, -20 Invulnerability; Second blast did 15 damage points, -4 Invulnerability, -5PP, and -6 HP}

[18] Quarry moved toward Super Nova as he said, “For Earth and the Guardians!” He launched a huge extended fist at Super Nova. His punched missed the flaming Tarot Master.

[17] Torrent splashed out of the stream and moved behind Super Nova, “For Earth and the Guardians” she cried. She launched two long watery arms at Super Nova. Her first punched missed and her second splashed harmlessly against his fiery invulnerability.

[17] Sister Indigo flew around toward the darkness column. “You can’t hide from me. Give the Soul-Scythe over to me. It is obvious you want someone else to carry the burden for you. I can handle it.” She fired two spirit bolts into the where she guess Red Hawk would be hiding. She guessed wrong.

{GM Note: Red Hawk’s vibration defense and being hidden in the darkness significantly lower Sister Indigo’s chance to hit that she couldn’t risk multi-attacking and to settle for a dual attack. The first bolt passed harmlessly through Red Hawk. The second bolt would have hit if not for the darkness bonus.}

[17] Mother Superior attacked CX despite the pain. She fired a lightning bolt from her magical flail. The bolt struck Centurion X hard but he rolled with the damage and would be able to continue the fight. His armor’s systems continue to function normally.

{GM Note: Mother Superior’s attack did 12 damage points, -7 PP and -5 HP. CX made System failure save}

[14] Thunderhead exited the doorway in the floor of the hut, the same doorway that Jacco had disappeared into. Thunderhead flew up to the rest of the Guardians. He thought-sent to the Guardians, "I've found something."

Jacco did not follow him.
[1] Red Hawk’s android body repaired itself.

{GM Note: Red Hawk regenerated 4 HP, spending 2 PP to do it. Black Orchid is fully healed, she doesn’t need to regenerate this turn}

Please remember when you are calculating range that the Flying PCs are 16” above ground. So for Quarry, Torrent, and Lord Norma who are on ground level a value of 16” has to be added as well as the actual squares counted to determine whether they are in range and for determining range penalties.

OOC:  :D

IC:  Seeing that his leader had escaped with the Scythe, CX turned on his attackers.

"My weakness?  Lady, you must be oblivious..."

CX reaches out with his magnetics to use the armor and weapon to squeeze her (crush damage)

If not successful he will try again.

If he is successful in seizing Mommy Duperior, he will then use her as a flail against Not-So-Normal-Noman.

After his attacks he will realize his leader is in trouble.  Over the link: "Anyone who can, get Star Hawk out of there!  They've got him in a crossfire!!!"

OOC:  It appears that the dyslexia my fingers suffer from is getting worse.  Please forgive all the typos?  BTW.  I had to backspace more than a few times to get this out!!!  aackk!!!!!!!  LOL

OOC: It's okay. We all meant what you knew. ;)

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Awwww Jon. Take the fun right out of that dig I had ready to go *wink* Leave it to Adamas' alter ego to take he high ride :-)

So yes we will assume he meant Red Hawk and not Starbolt. And boy has he bit the nail on the head. I would never had expect Sister Indigo to put the smack down with SIX attacks.  Whew. This Scythe ain't worth being a target I'll tell ya *lol*

Great combat issue Tom and Jeff is right. The Thunderbolt flash back and Scythe stuff was good reads.

OOC:  Great issue!  The obituaries of Obituary's victims were masterfully done!

August 17th is no problem.

Jack Frost:

Jack's sharp, blue eyes spied the scroll pouch on Lord Noman's side.  The evil wizard used a scroll to enslave Jack's elemental kin!  But no longer!

Jack flew up into the thick fog, to disappear from view. He would float down silently behind Lord Noman, trying to sneak up on him unseen!

OOC:
Orders:

Movement: Fly out of sight and return behind Noman.

"Attack:"
If Noman is unsuspecting of Jack's presence, then sly, nimble Jack will try to secretly pickpocket the contents of the scroll pouch, leaving the empty pouch on Noman's hip!  (Stealth skill and Escape Artist skill?)

If Noman sees Jack coming, then pick pocketing won't work.  In this case, Jack will separate Noman from the scroll by other means.  ZING! At point blank range, he'll ice blast a special attack on the pouch to destroy it and its contents. If it isn't destroyed, the attack will at least bury the pouch deep beneath lots of clinging ice, separating it from Noman's grasp/control, and perhaps even tipping Noman over from the ice's weight.

Goal: Get the scroll away from Noman, or destroy the scroll, so the enslaved Natural Forces are freed!

Thanks.

Best,
Jeff

OOC: Seeing Marutukku down, and Red Hawk taking a beating,  Adamas took to the sky.

IC: Adamas slowly rose into the sky... "Super Nova," He said in a booming voice, powered by his enhanced lungs, "I believe we have unfinished business."

OOC: Adamas will attempt to take some of the "Heat" off of Red Hawk, Using a technique he learned fighting the Star Devourer, he grabs one of the Statues or a large boulder, and Plows into Super Nova with as much speed as he can.  Hoping to add his velocity and the stone brawling weapon to his strength damage, as well as hopefully getting a slight bonus to his accuracy.

OOC: This should be fun, wishing Jack much luck, as turning the Natural Forces to our side could certainly turn the tide of this battle.

Hey Guys.

Tom I've reread the issue and I think Xiang Liang is still in the staff. Is that correct? If not the Jeff please ignore this post and I'll start over :-)

Red Hawk concentrates his will focusing on keeping his meta-systems online as he is buffeted again and again by the Guardian's foes. The fiery blast of power and energies dissipate just in time for his to see Jacco follow Thunderhead down into the underground ruins. Focusing his thoughts to Clark through the amulet. <"Powers get back here. Xiang Liang says we need you" . . . "Watch out, Jacco's on your tail.">

OOC: Yes the android can lie :-)  I figure if Clark says this Liang person is trustworthy he might respond to someone he knows as opposed to the newly appointed rookie team leader. :-)

Later Guardians
John.

Xing is gone but Thunderhead doesn't know it. Only holder to the Scythe was linked into the Souls. So the Souls are player knowledge except for Red Hawk.

Jack Frost is acting on what Donnah said not on the Soul's.

What Red Hawk says works as far as Thunderhead knows.

Tom

Thanks Tom. I thought the Scythe might be sentient but had the feeling I wasn't reading the Liang thing right. All good though. I will rewrite that with same goal and add to it tomorrow.

Hey Jon. The idea was TH going down the rabbit hole alone falls into the category of "Bad Things" and Hawk is trying to respond to that as team leader. I'll tweak a different response. After I figure who might be best to go down there with him. I'm thinking Black Orchid or Red Hawk work best. Her for the invisibility and darkness. Hawk because his ability to move through solid objects.

Ideas are welcome :)
John.

OOC: Making the suggestion Adamas to leave with the Scythe isn't easy considering were already missing Thunderbolt but the sooner Doc has it the safer it might be. That's a question not a statement really. Tom please consider Red Hawk at his maximum range without incurring a range modifier directly southeast (diagonal) of Lord Noman

Thanks John

Awesome stuff!  Thanks.

Quick question:

 Can Jack Frost see Noman's scroll that has enslaved Donnah?

Thanks
Jeff
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Can Jack Frost see Noman's scroll that has enslaved Donnah? Jack Frost uses his search skill and is successful in determining where the scroll is. While he doesn't see the scroll he sees that Lord Noman is wearing a pouch that is used to hold scrolls. He knows from his prior experience with Wizards that the scroll would be in this pouch (think a long rectangle pouch with a shoulder strap so it is worn from the neck on the side from the ribs down to the neck. It can hang on the side or behind the back of the wear.) Lord Noman is wearing it on this side.

Tom,
 How are things going with you and your family? Well I hope. I am trying to get a handle on my character, specifically his hght. chr. I was wondering, what would be the best way to utilize this power? Any help you could offer would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Best Wishes,
Jamey/Starbolt

Heightened Charisma is great for inspiring their team members in the face of terrifying opponents. They can use it to sway neutral characters to their side. They can use it to intimidate common criminals to surrender or run.

It is the basis for the Presence Skill so you can use it as a skill test to bolster teammates (+2 to hit for turn) to frighten opponents (-2 to hit for the turn). Think Captain America and Batman.

If against an opponent then the skill test is modified by their Presence (Charisma) as well, so it can be harder. Common Criminals don't have presence but Jacco and the Tarot Masters do.

The Natural Forces are considered neutral.

Starbolt  will use his persuasiveness to convince The Natural Forces That Jacco and his cronies are going to destroy this world, and leave it in no shape for anyone to inhabit.
IC: Directing his statements to The Natural Forces, "Please, can you not see that what Jacco and his cronies have in mind will only bring destruction to this planet, and leave it uninhabitable for all of us including you. Hi all, I think I never sent in a turn!

The Black Orchid, hearing the call to protect Starbolt erects a cylinder of darkness around the two of them, so they can't be seen from the outside, but can see themselves and the top of the cylinder. She'll make the cylinder as high as she can.
