Crusade: Energy Onslaught! - Issue 40

{Location: Everglades Florida}

The New Crusaders were following a lead on the theft of chemicals from the U.S. Military. It led them to a small island within the Swamp. There they were attacked by Swamp Rat and Sludge. The New Crusaders and the Swamp Fiends battled back and forth.

StrikeForce used the grapnel from his staff on a nearby tree to extract himself from the quicksand. “I don't think that I was thinking about this'd possibility when I designed my staff, but it sure came in handy." The Bionic Brawler thought to himself. Standing firmly on solid ground, StrikeForce ran towards Sludge’s back. "Funny repartee time is over, time to take "it" out" he thought to himself.

[36]       Adamas continued his energy onslaught.  Power blasting Sludge again, the Alien Powerhouse thought “at least we are tiring him out. He's gotta go down soon.”

All five blasts struck the Sludge, “Arrgh”, it cried as it struggled to keep from falling down. It did not fall. It continued to fight.

[29]       StrikeForce attacked Sludge’s back with his sticks.

WHAM! WHAM! The Bionic Brawler hit with both his attacks. The dimensional swamp creature staggered then fell to the ground. Its body broke into a thousand pieces.

No! I can’t go back! ARRGH!  The dimensional being that inhabited the mud creature was forcefully sent back to its home dimension in a crescendo of pain and anguish.
Manta Man flew over and joined the others as Black Orchid dissipated her darkness silhouettes. He said “Wow I am glad that is over. As far as traps go that was a doozy.”

“StrikeForce, we don’t have time for me to fully recover so I want you to maintain tactical command.”

Manta Man looked the rest of the New Crusaders. “We must be on the right track because the villains set a trap for us. What do you think our next steps should be?”

StrikeForce uses the grapple feature from his staff to lock onto a tree and pull himself from the quicksand. "I don't think that I was thinking about this'd possibility when I designed my staff, but it sure came in handy." The Bionic Brawler thinks to himself. StrikeForce runs towards Sludge’s back and attacks with his sticks.

Jamey
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Wow, time flies.  Adamas will continue his energy onslaught.  Powerblast again, at least we are eating up his power points.

He's gotta go down soon.

Jon
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
With the way we are rolling, it may take a while.

Jamey
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Maybe he’s got a mutant luck power...

Jon
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The Black Orchid dissipates the two that were hit and moves to position herself near the remaining ones. "Ow! that hurt! But you got lucky, you won't do that again!"

Under her breath into the intercom, The Black Orchid whispers "I'm OK, I'm trying to keep the pressure off you guys"

Crusade: Quicksand! - Issue 39

{Location: Everglades Florida}

The New Crusaders were following a lead on the theft of chemicals from the U.S. Military. It led them to a small island within the Swamp. There they were attacked by Swamp Rat and Sludge. The New Crusaders and the Swamp Fiends battled back and forth.

[43]       Adamas seeing Swamp Rat went down; Adamas picked him up so he doesn't drown.  Adamas then turned his vision attack on the Mountain of Mud. All 5 beams blasted into Sludge. The Mystical Mud Menace groaned in pain but he withstood the onslaught and would be able to continue to fight.
{GM Note: Adamas did 12 damage points from Blast 1, Blast 2 had 5 damage points, Blast 3 has 5 damage points, Blast 4 had 7 damage points, and Blast 5 had 2 damage points.}

[32]       Skink said "He's made out of mud or somethin'! I'm gonna be here all night beatin on him! Can we blow him up or stuff him in the swamp boat fan and disperse him? We'd need two forklifts to get him into the ocean!” Skink climbed down from Sludge’s shoulder to be behind the Massive Mud Monster. He grabbed Sludge and began to lift him up. Instead of two forklifts, one Skink was all that was needed to move this Mountain of Mud to the swamp boat fan. He hoped it was still able to work. As Skink started to turn he stumbled and Sludge slipped from his hands. Sludge thudded on the ground when he dropped. “Ha, I am not as easy to move as you thought?” Sludge said.
{GM Note: Skink has enough Carrying Capacity to carry Sludge by himself. When I rolled the action for him to grab and lift Sludge, I rolled a 20 on 1d20, so it was a fumble. On the Fumble table I rolled awkward position. So that is how I came up with Skink stumbling and dropping Sludge. Skink will have a +2 to be hit until his next action on next turn.}

[24]       The Black Orchid saw Manta Man's miscalculation and thought to herself, "No! One more hit and he's done for." Manta Man freed himself from the tree. He flew away from Sludge and positioned himself to fire two electro-blasts. He fired one from each hand. One missed but the other struck the Mystical Mud Menace. Sludge grunted as the electricity coursed through his body. Sludge rolled with the pain as best as he could. He was still able to continue fighting.

[23]       Then she noticed StrikeForce being stuck in quicksand and spitted "Dammit!" under her breath. StrikeForce used the grapnel from his staff on a nearby tree to extract himself from the quicksand. Standing firmly on solid ground, the bionic brawler ran towards Sludge, the escrima sticks in hand looking to inflict damage on the inhabitant of the swamp. "Funny reparte time is over, time to take "it" out" he thought to himself.

WHAM! One of StrikeForce’s two escrima sticks slammed forcefully into Sludge; the other missed. The swamp creature cried out in pain as it was only able to roll with a little of the strike. The battering Sludge had been receiving was starting to wear down its defense and it was struggling to withstand the onslaught. It still managed to stand and continue fighting.
{GM Note: StrikeForce did 16 damage points}.

[16]       Black Orchid ran around to about 10 feet in front of Sludge. Off to one side she formed darkness into a ball from which emerge five rough silhouettes of a person in fighting stance. "You think you're clever, try picking up five at a time!"

[14]       Sludge trudged forward. “I show you what I can do against five at a time!” He raised both hands above his head and brought his massive fists down to smash two of the shadow warriors. He missed with both attacks.

Ooc: Love it! At least that's one down, time to focus...

Jon
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Awesome round!

That could have gone a little better for either side!

The Black Orchid sees Manta man's miscalculation and thinks to herself, "No! One more hit and he's done for." Then she notices Strike Force being stuck and spits "Dammit!" under her breath. She runs around to about 10 feet in front of Sludge (the . Off to one side she forms darkness into a ball from which emerge five rough silhouettes of a person in fighting stance (all still connected to the ball of darkness, as it needs to be one continuous darkness). "You think you're clever, try picking up five at a time!"

The Black Orchid is shown at B and the darkness construct is indicated on the map

OOC: Let me know if I can't do this. I think the other darkness is dismissed now. If not, she'll do whatever is most advantageous (e.g. leave it if it takes an action to dismiss or dismiss if it causes more strain to keep it).
Also she moved around to make sure her voice came from the five "shadow warriors"

Marc

Let me know if I can't do this. I think the other darkness is dismissed now. If not, she'll do whatever is most advantageous (e.g. leave it if it takes an action to dismiss or dismiss if it causes more strain to keep it).

Yes, Black Orchid can do this. The other darkness will be dispelled by this action, but will not cost her an action or movement.

Tom
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
StrikeForce goes from bad to worse.

Jamey
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Tom,
Is there anything that StrikeForce can use his staff's grapple on to pull himself out of the quicksand?

Jamey
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yes there are trees in range that he can use the grapple on

Tom
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Does this count as movement, and can I still attack, or do I have to wait until the next issue?

Jamey
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It would count as half your movement so you can still attack.

Tom
----------------------------------------------------------------------
StrikeForce uses the grapnel power from his staff on a nearby tree to extract himself from the quicksand. Standing firmly on solid ground, the bionic brawler runs towards sludge, escrima sticks in hand looking to inflict damage on the inhabitant of the swamp. "Funny reparte time is over, time to take "it" out" he thinks to himself.

Jamey
----------------------------------------------------------------------
OOC: The swamp boat is completely demolished, yes?

"He's made out of mud or somethin'! I'm gonna be here all night beatin on him! Can we blow him up or stuff him in the swamp boat fan and disperse him? We'd need two forklifts to get him into the ocean!

Chuck
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The bottom on the swamp boat is and it is partially submerged but the fan is in working order if its engine can be restarted.

Tom
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Well, it feels like we're getting nowhere fast.

IC:  Seeing Swamp Rat go down, Adamas will pick him up so he doesn't drown.  He'll then turn his vision attack on the mountain of mud.

Powerblast 5X

Crusade: A Little Occupied - Issue 38

{Location: Everglades Florida}

The New Crusaders were following a lead on the theft of chemicals from the U.S. Military. It led them to a small island within the Swamp. There they were attacked by Swamp Rat and Sludge. The New Crusaders and the Swamp Fiends battled back and forth.

 Through his team com-link, StrikeForce said, "Hey Adamas, can you take out Swamp Rat? I seem to be occupied right now."

Adamas nodded affirmative.

[43]       Adamas fired 5 power blasts from his eyes at Swamp Rat. Four of the five shots hit with it being the last shot that missed. The first and second blast shredded Swamp Rat’s armor vest down to almost nothing. The third and fourth blast struck Swamp Rat. He groaned in pain as he rolled with the damage. He was still standing and able to fight.
{GM Note: Adamas did 16 damage points to Swamp Rat’s armor and 7 points of damage to Swamp Rat.}

[32]       StrikeForce attempted to break free from his adversary but he wasn’t strong enough.
{Sludge rolled 16 damage points and StrikeForce rolled 12. Since StrikeForce’s damage was less than Sludge’s the Bionic Brawler wasn’t able to break free}

[31]       "Ok big n tall, that's enough outta you!" The Skink said, ratcheting up for a new attack. He ran up and over Sludge and onto his back.

"This is totally gonna wreck my gloves... I just got em how I like em...there's never a hand grenade around when you need one"

Skink dug his claws into the back of Sludge’s neck' head area, searching its mass for any sort of central core. He wasn’t able to find anything. It appeared this was some sort of magical construct.

Sludge said, “Foolish child of Man, do you think I would have any of my anchors on my body? No, I will not make it so easy for you to banish me from this realm.”
{GM Note: Skink did 9 points of damage from the attack; Sludge did roll with part of the damage}

[23]       Swamp Rat pulled his automatic rifle around and fired on Adamas.
KABOOM! The rifle exploded in an epic misfire. His remaining armor provided no protection. Swamp Rat fell to the ground incapacitated and wasn’t able to fight further.
{GM Note: Swamp Rat rolled a 20 on 1d20 for his first shot. The Critical Failure table roll produced device failure/destruction; therefore the jam and explosion. All 3 shots he was going to fire were rolled and added together for the explosion impact}

[23]       "Good to see you back up, sir" The Black Orchid said to Manta Man. "If you need to, just move back into the darkness." Moving directly up behind Sludge, she put her hand on his back and let go with a full powered vacuum blast. Power drained violently from Sludge and it cried out from the loss.
{GM Note: Black Orchid drained 21 power points from Sludge}

 "You should let him go now."

Sludge replied, “By your command, unseen one.”

[22] With a wailing laugh Sludge lifted StrikeForce over his head. He threw him toward Swamp Rat but the throw was short. StrikeForce landed in a watery spot on the Island. Sludge had thrown the Bionic Brawler, to the hero’s shock and dismay, into Quicksand!

“Ha! HA!” Sludge bellowed, “One down and more to follow. Happy now that I let him go?”

[16]       Manta Man flew around in front of Sludge. He fired bolts of electricity from both of his hands. “I am not happy one bit!!”

Both blasts missed. Manta-Man miss calculated his trajectory as well. He flew into the branches of a nearby tree. He was stuck.
{The second roll to hit was a 20 on 1d20; a critical failure. He put himself in an awkward position and has a +4 to be hit by opponents next turn.}

It amazes me how the dice and V&V rules can make a fight that looks 1 sided on paper at really hard fought one when played out. I am really enjoying this, I hope you are too.

Tom
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
I am enjoying it as well Tom. I just need to think of my next move.

Jamey
------------------------------------------------------------------------
StrikeForce will attempt to break free from his adversary. Through his team com-link, he will say, "Hey Adamas, can you take out Swamp Rat? I seem to be occupied right now."

Jamey
----------------------------------------------------------------------
"Good to see you back up, sir" The Black Orchid says to Manta Man. "If you need to, just move back into the darkness." Moving directly up behind Sludge, she puts her hand on his back and lets go with a full powered vacuum blast. "You should let him go now."

(Do I get a point-blank or touch bonus?)

Marc
---------------------------------------------------------------------
There isn't a bonus for point blank or touch but you will get +4 for behind and +4 for being invisible for a total of +8 to hit.

Tom
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Good enough!

Marc
----------------------------------------------------------------------
"ok big n tall, that's enough outta you!" The Skink said, ratcheting up for a new attack...

[[ id like to make an agility save to run up and over sludge and onto his back and then dig his claws into the back of his neck' head area, searching its mass for any sort of central core ]]

Crusade: Gas Him! - Issue 37

{Location: Everglades Florida}

The New Crusaders were following a lead on the theft of chemicals from the U.S. Military. It led them to a small island within the Swamp. There they were attacked by Swamp Rat and Sludge. Manta Man was incapacitated when the hut they were exploring exploded. The New Crusaders and the Swamp Fiends battled back and forth.

StrikeForce called to Adamas through the group communicator. "Since Swamp Rat is away from us, how about gassing him."

[41]       Adamas having previously sucked in the gas flew close to Swamp Rat. He blew the gas on Swamp Rat knocking him out.
{GM Note: Hit on a 14, Gas is an automatic KO with chance of wake up on opponents turn. Wake roll is 1d100 vs Endurance score}

[32]       StrikeForce changed targets and attacked Sludge. StrikeForce said "I would give up if I was you; it seems that you are out of partners". StrikeForce dual attacked with his Escrima. The first attack hit and the second attack missed. Sludge grunted in pain from the strike but continued to fight. Sludge replied, “I don’t need no stinkin’ partner to beat the like of you.”
{StrikeForce did 23 damage points with his blow. Sludge rolled and took damage but was not knocked back.}

[31]       Skink continued his attacking of Sludge with his plank. His attack missed.
{GM Note: Rolled a 19 on 1d20 to hit}

[23]       Looking around, The Black orchid saw that her companions appeared to have things fairly well under control. She continued trying to revive Manta Man. Slowing the Aquatic Avenger work up. “Thanks Black Orchid”, Manta Man said.
{GM Note: Rolled a 50 on 1d00 vs 87 needed to wake up. Manta recovered 1 round of healing. He now has 2 HP}

[22]       Swamp Rat woke up with a start. He quickly gathered his weapons. He trudged through the waist water to get back to the Island. “Ha, thought you were so tough. Well two can play that game.”
{GM Note, Rolled 15 on a 1d100 for Swamp Rat’s wake up roll}

[18]       Sludge moved behind StrikeForce. Sludge reached out with both arms to grab StrikeForce. He was successful in pinning the Bionic Battler’s arms to his body. “Now I have you”, grumbled the Biological Behemoth.

[15]       Manta Man stepped out of Black Orchid’s darkness area and said, “Zeta Protocol remains as instructed. StrikeForce is still the Team Tactical Leader. I am up but I won’t say I am completely recovered, but I am capable of helping out.”

He fired a bolt of electricity striking Swamp Rat in the chest. Swamp Rat’s body armor vest protected him. Swamp Rat was still able to fight.

[0] {GM Note: Black Orchid regenerated 3 HP for PR of 2. +3 HP, -2 PP}

<Turns and Actions due October 23th>

[31]       Skink
[23]       Black Orchid
[15]       Manta Man – No wake roll, Needs 1 Hit Point to attempt to wake up.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Great issue Tom. I'll get working on my reply soon.

Jamey
------------------------------------------------------------------------
StrikeForce calls Adamas through the group communicator. "Since Swamp Rat is away from us, how about gassing him."

If the gas puts him out, StrikeForce will change targets and attack Sludge, if the Swamp Rat is still fighting, StrikeForce will run to close the distance between them and attack him instead.

If fighting Sludge, he will say "I would give up if I was you, It seems that you are out of partners".

If fighting Swamp Rat, "I guess you haven't heard to never bring a gun to a stick fight".

Jamey
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Instead of running through the swamp, StrikeForce will leap over the distance.

Jamey
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Looking around, The Black orchid sees that her companions seem to have things fairly well under control. She will continue trying to revive Manta Man unless Adamas, Strike Force or Skink get into trouble before her action.

Crusade: On My Bad Side - Issue 36

{Location: Everglades Florida}

The New Crusaders were following a lead on the theft of chemicals from the U.S. Military. It led them to a small island within the Swamp. There they were attacked by Swamp Rat and Sludge. Manta Man was incapacitated when the hut they were exploring exploded. Adamas was knocked out by a gas grenade thrown by Swamp Rat after Adamas had smashed his Swamp Boat.

!!Static cut thru the New Crusader communicators followed by a high pitch shriek!!

"Attention New Crusaders! Attention all New Crusaders! I am TEACHER. I repeat I am TEACHER."

"I have been monitoring this channel as per Crusader Combat Protocol.  Manta Man has been absent of any vocal activity. He did not send in a silence notification response from any of my direct queries. Programming Analysis Logic has activated Zeta Protocol."

"StrikeForce has been designated as New Crusader Team Leader immediately!"

"I repeat, per Manta Man's Zeta Protocol StrikeForce is New Crusader Team Leader!"

!!Brief Static occurred as the New Crusader comm.'s override was turned off!!

Realizing what a tremendous honor Manta-Man had bestowed upon him. StrikeForce thought "Wow that is a lot live up to. I'll do my best to live up to your faith in me."

Using his comm. StrikeForce relayed his thoughts to the team. "Skink, it looks like it is you and me verses the two uglies. If you want, I'll keep our current dance partner, and you can take the guy from the boat, since you are closest to him."

[40]       Adamas woke up.  His alien physiology shook off the effects of the Knock Out gas quickly. His body adapted to the airborne gas. With a great inhale Adamas suck all of the gas into his alien lungs. He slowly floated out of the swamp above the wrecked boat. He calmly and sternly looked at Swamp Rat.

{GM Note: Adamas’ action for this turn was his wake up roll. Sucking in the gas was his movement. I used his remaining movement to get Adamas back into the sky. That ends his turn. He can attack with the gas next turn, if he chooses}

[35]       The Skink pulled a feint and abruptly changed tactics, to attack behind Sludge’s knees with the lumber.

"Mebbe if we drop him on the sand, he'll soak it up and get too heavy to move!"

He swung his plank and missed.

{GM Note: Skink rolled a 17 missing his attack}

[32]       Seeing that Skink was continuing to fight Sludge StrikeForce went after the swamp rat.

As he approached Swamp Rat, StrikeForce said, “I will give you the chance to give up and spare yourself from the beat down I'm going to give you. That bomb you set has really put you on my bad side."

Swamp Rat pointed his rifle at StrikeForce, “I will never surrender, not as long as I have my little friend.”

StrikeForce launched into a dual attack with his escrima. Both struck Swamp Rat swiftly and hard.

{GM Note: Both strikes hit. The first strike did 22 damage points and the second did 21 damage points}

Swamp Rat flew backwards from the massive blows. He rolled with the strikes as best as he could but the damage was too much and he was knocked back 35 feet.

SPLASH! He landed in the swamp water. He was still conscious and still able to fight, barely.

[21] Shakily he stood up in the water which was 3 feet deep. He had lost his rifle and other equipment in the landing. He searched the area near him, finding his rifle and lost gear. He quickly checked to make sure they were still functioning. Finding them in working order he turned and faced StrikeForce. “Nice try but not good enough,” Swamp Rat said.

[18]       Sludge moved behind Skink. It reached out to grab him in a bear hug. Skink leapt above its arms causing Sludge to miss.

[17]       Black Orchid checked on Manta Man attempting to revive him. Manta Man was still breathing and appeared to have been hurt badly by the blast but he wasn’t in any danger of dying. Manta Man did not wake up.

{GM Note: Because of Black Orchid medical training I allow her Endurance of 29 to be used instead of Manta Man’s 12. On a d100 I rolled 87. Manta Man did not wake up. If Black Orchid continues to provide medical assistance I will lower the difficulty by 1 level. That would make the wake up score Endurance x 3 (87) against d100.}

[  0]      Manta Man {GM Note: No wake roll, Needs 1 Hit Point to attempt to wake up.}

The White Heron flew away.

Great issue Tom. I was wondering if StrikeForce knows the location of his team and the hostile, in relation to their location on the map?

Jamey
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Yes he knows where everyone is, except for Black Orchid. With the darkness projection and her being invisible as well, his sensors can't pick up on her unless he focuses on finding her (game wise he has to perform a Detect Hidden roll).

Tom
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Is Skink or StrikeForce aware of Swamp Rat approaching from his rear?

Thanks, Jamey
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yes, both Skink and StrikeForce saw where Swamp Rat ran to and where he is now.

Tom
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Using his comm. StrikeForce relays his thoughts to the team. "Skink, it looks like it is you and me verses the two uglies. If you want, I'll keep our current dance partner, and you can take the guy from the boat, since You are closest to him."

StrikeForce will continue to attack the walking slugs. Unless Skink would prefer to switch. Then I will go after the swamp rat.

OOC: Depending on who he ends up with Will determine his dialogue.

The walking sludge. IC: "I don't know if you can understand what I am saying, but that bomb blowing up on me has me in a foul mood. Not as foul as you smell, but pretty close."

The swamp rat. IC: "I will give you the chance to give up and spare yourself from the beat down I'm going to give you. That bomb you set has really put you on my bad side."

Nice...

OOC question, Adamas was knocked out by the gas... any chance he could use his augmented lungs to inhale the fumes and focus them at swamp rat without KO'ing himself?  I mean he can live in space, I think it's probably the surprise that allowed the gas to overcome him... after he awakens of course.

Jon
----------------------------------------------------------------------
OOC: Adamas' adaptation allows him to adapt to Poisons as well as being Independent from Atmosphere at a cost PR=1 per hour. So for PR of 1 he can adapt to the KO Gas. He can spend part of his movement to sucked in the gas.

Next turn as his action, he can blow (what I thought you meant by focus) the gas on Swamp Rat. That would be an attack which is why an action if required (if he wanted to blow it out into the swamp or toward an inanimate object. Since it would be an automatic success, I would have considered it just movement.)

So basically for this turn Adamas can wake up, adapt to the KO gas, and inhale it. He would have movement left so he could move to another location as well.

Next turn Adamas can exhale the KO gas at Swamp Rat as his action (attack) for the turn.

You were correct; it was the surprise of the attack. Adamas can't adapt to localize events (in other words, use Adaptation as a defense) so he couldn't use the Adaptation to resist the gas. This turn if Adamas hadn't made his wake up roll he would adapted to the gas at a PR of 1 but it would have taken his whole turn (action and movement).

Tom
----------------------------------------------------------------------
OOC; Sounds good, that's what he'll do then. Hopefully he's not immune to his own toxins.  If one of the others from our team gets in that area of effect, he'll blow the gas into the swamp, and attack with power blast at a distance... autofire.

Let me know if you need anything more specific.

Tom
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Realizing what a tremendous honor Manta-Man had bestowed upon him. StrikeForce thinks "Wow that is a lot live up to. I'll do my best to live up to your faith in me."

Jamey
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I need to get my turn. I always seem to be either first or last!

Marc
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Hmm, based on that transmission, The Black Orchid will see if Manta Man is breathing and if she can somehow revive him.

(Sorry about being late)
Marc
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Hold on..just getting this now..let me read it..is Manta Man KOed at 0 with a wakeup roll coming? Or is he wrecked? Damn.

Chuck
--------------------------------------------------------------------
I believe that he is waiting on a wake-up roll, but according to Crusader protocol, a team leader was selected because he became incapacitated.

Jamey
--------------------------------------------------------------------
You need at least 1 HP to make a wake up roll. Since Manta Man can't roll for wake up until he naturally heals 1 or receives medical assistance.
