Crossover: Briefing - Issue 1

As DarkStar stood amidst the greatest assembling of heroes in Megalopolis’ history, he thought back to yesterday. The Guardians, formerly known as The Team, had returned from the Domain. It was a victory for they rescued the stolen scroll, the kidnapped professors and Donnah. But it came with a price. Not all of them returned. Agent America was left behind. He had chosen to separate from them and they hadn’t seen him since.

**FLASHBACK**

Magus provided the FISH agents with a thorough and detailed report of The Guardians trip to The Domain. He also explained that the rescue of Agent America was his top priority at the moment, and that after he and his team have had a chance to rest and re-equip themselves; they were headed back to The Domain as soon as possible.

Mr. Delta, FISH Agent, informed him that was not possible. The Guardians had to report CHESS HQ tomorrow. As licensed Super Heroes it was mandatory. The Domain threat to the Earth was more important than anything else.

DarkStar didn’t bother to hide his frustration with the government sticking their nose in the Guardians business; Joshua focused his thoughts through the Amulet to Dr. Arcane. "What the hell is going on here Doc'? The F.I.S.H. suddenly decides the Domain's a threat worthy of their omniscient attention and they're the ones deciding who leads the Guardians? . . . and a damned rookie with one battle under his belt at that?

Dr Avery replied with confusion in his thoughts. “They didn’t decide who was leading in Agent America’s absence. I did. While Adamas did well in the Domain he is still a stranger in a strange land here. That is a significant weakness. As far as experience is concerned, how many years did you work for FedEx or DHL before starting StarCorp? You have proven that ability is far more important than experience.”

DarkStar replied, “I see Adamas is relieved, and Magus is your boy, but he's got some big ass boots to fill ... and in a hurry from the sound of that request from CHESS. If you think he's ready Doc', I'll give him the same kind of support I gave AA when you named him team leader. FISH can kiss my big blue butt though. This has always been you're creation. The day it starts becoming a government operation, I'm out of here.”

Dr Avery replied, “It depends on how you define government operation. Doesn’t StarCorp have a lot of government contracts where they define the need and StarCorp executes the contract? Isn’t that what you did with creating the base on Mars? It is the same here. The Guardians at times will need to listen to the government’s need and help fulfill it. This is one of those times”

DarkStar remembered how the FISH agents noticed his attire and were not pleased to see it.  DarkStar told them "Kiss off” before he went to his room in the Mansion. In seconds later he was the StarCorp Tower cleaning up and changing uniforms.

At the Mansion, Dr. Avery met with Adamas. They were in the library of Dr. Arcane. “Adamas, while you were away I discovered why you are vulnerable to magic. As your special abilities were made by magic so can they be unmade by magic. I know how to fix it. I had Safeguard collect the reagents while you were in the Domain. If you are willing, I can perform an incantation which will remove your vulnerability to magic.”

Adamas agreed.

The next day the team at the coordinates they had been given, Commander Rose stood outside for a minute. He was a first concerned about security until his spotted the flight patterns of 6 squads of CHESS Knights on Skycycles. All around the building stood different CHESS Bishops performing surveillance from covered locations. Upon entering he found more Bishops monitoring the security systems. He began to wonder if all the Bishops were here. Bishop Prince led them into the conference room.

**End of FLASHBACK**

It took a second to survey the crowd, and being almost a foot taller than most the individuals in the auditorium made that fairly easy to do. Focusing his thoughts through the amulet to the other 'Guardians', "Everyone let's keep in contact but fan out. Let's check the temperature of the room. If you need any information just 'whistle'."   Activating the miniature mic built into his gear Joshua spoke softly to his much missed friend. “Cybil, please activate facial recognition program bravo and tag each with their ‘hero’ identities. We just want to know which hero is which, not who they are underneath the mask . . . Not today at least.”

A few of the heroes needed no introduction and the slim athletic man walking toward him was such a man, Gauntlet … a veteran of the business. The story the Commander Astro of GIANT had shared with him about the man’s exploits with Stormbringer was enough to warrant his instant respect.

Gauntlet said to DarkStar. "I like you arm bracers. They look nice do they also have a functional purpose as well?"

“It’s a pleasure to meet you sir … my bracers?” A small smile slipped from DarkStar’s lips. “Yes they do, but not one you might think.”

“Cybil say hello to the Gauntlet. I believe he’s an acquaintance of the Commander Astro. Gauntlet, meet my almost constant companion and most trusted colleague … Cybil for Cybernetic Interactive Logic-system. Cybil let’s show Gauntlet what you can do. Would you please tap into Scion and generate a holographic real-time representation on the downtown area around our current location?” Almost instantly, DarkStar’s ever ready AI projected a small but easily discernible three dimensional image of a three block radius around the CHESS headquarters. Looking closer Gauntlet can see the tiny automobiles moving up and down the city streets.

Gauntlet said, "Cool. Can you tag a subject then have the project follow it as it travels? Are you able to order pizza with that as well?"

Thoughts of the bio-tracking program spring into Joshua's mind, and his current exuberance was tempered by the too brief encounter with Maxima, "I looked into adding that particular feature, but the DSH informed me that I might end up being in violation of a number of civil liberties if it ever became known I were doing such a thing." Laughing at the idea of Cybil ever ordering pizza DarkStar good naturedly clapped Gauntlet on the shoulder "Why order pizza, when you can teleport to Palermo to Juliette's for real Sfincione"

Shatterman walked up with Condor and Red Hawk to Black Orchid and Starbolt. "Hi I saw you walk in with the Crusaders. I am a former team member. I am Shatterman. This is Condor and Red Hawk.”

Red Hawk kept behind Dennis and Brian. He didn’t want to intrude and was distracted as he noticed a couple of the New Super Society team members looking this direction. “They know”. A friendly nod toward the two new Crusaders, he leaned over and shook hands with the spearhead of the team that had taken down the Crushers. “Nice job putting away Mocker.” The irony that the sonic-villain was an artificial life form like his self was not lost on Chris.

Red Hawk tilted his head, trying to give his auditory sensors a better angle. “I swear I heard …” Looking into the auditoriums ceiling, he zoomed his visual focus and adjust them for the low light levels. “Hmmm … nothing. I thought for sure I saw something”.

"Hello, I'm The Black Orchid." She shook hands with any willing to do so. "I was called in to help with the Crusader situation, but I'm not a member or anything like that. I've been working directly for CHESS so far. Starbolt is much more involved than I am. Now I've heard of you and Condor, before and..." She noticed Red Hawk looking up and looked up herself. Not really seeing anything, she continued the conversation. "Well anyway, I guess I'm a little confused as to why we're all here again. It seemed we took care of most of the Crushers threat although we might have missed somebody. I feel like I missed something or somebody there, but I'm not sure." She shook her head for a moment to clear her mind.

"So do you like working on your own now instead of being part of a group?"

Shatterman replied, “I really like working in on my own. While being a part of larger team is rewarding. I like the closeness that having a partner or two provides.”

Starbolt had gladly introduced himself to Red Hawk, Shatterman, and Condor.

Turning back to the small group, Chris listened to the confidence that the shining Starbolt spoke with and wondered if he’ll ever ‘feel’ that self-assured.

Starbolt’s thoughts took him to events of yesterday. He remembered when Manta Man had spotted him and what remained of Mocker. Manta Man signaled for Starbolt to join him at the crushed Crusher. When both had landed Manta Man said, “Help me gather up the pieces of Mocker. Good job out here, thanks.”

Starbolt replied while they are picking up the pieces of Mocker, "Thanks, and you are welcome. How is M-L doing? He is impulsive, but he is a good hero. With your teaching him, he should be great."

Manta-Man replied, "Manta-Lad is recovering. He is currently sedated. Yes the lad has great potential. Hopefully he will reach it."

Manta Man and Starbolt worked quickly together gathering up Mocker. Soon all of them, including the captured Crushers are in two Crusader Shuttles. They flew quickly to CHESS HQ. Blizzard set next to Starbolt. Looking his cousin in the eyes he said “thanks”.

Starbolt replied "no problem that is what family is for."

Blizzard gave Starbolt a fist bump.

Returning his thoughts to the present, Starbolt navigated the room introducing himself to the assembled heroes either singularly or in groups. The Stellar-Powered Sentinel will be cordial and respectful to all that he speaks to. To himself he thinks, "No way, this is small. You don't gather this many heroes for something unless it is BIG."

Enforcer stood next to The Wraith. He eyes looking forward, "Nice suit."

In the room full of heroes and all around strange, strange people, The Wraith felt uncomfortable.  “Does he want to join this group?  Any group?  After his assault he's had trouble trusting....anybody, really.”  He stayed in the background, moving more into the shadows to maintain a low profile.

But for now, he was staying.  If there's trouble this big, requiring this many heroes, The Wraith wanted to know what it was.

Enforcer turned to see the man in black was no longer standing there. He wasn’t offended. There was a time in his life when he operated the same way. It had cost him a lot. The woman he loved and the chance to have a family together. He wondered what price this man had paid. What price would this ‘shadow man’ have to pay in the future if he continued down that same path? For the Enforcer the price had been too steep and if he had it to do over again … well it wasn’t a thought he liked to entertain.

Adamas stood away from the crowd, his face stoic. He gazed across the crowd.  He was easily able to pick out his team mates among the throng of heroes.  Once he had their locations in mind and was sure he could get to any of them quickly if needed, he turned back to the window.

He had lost Agent America.  That pretty much summed it up.  He had failed his team, and lost an asset to this world in the coming battle, not to mention a friend.  He scanned the crowds below, gathered to catch a glimpse of their favorite hero, he saw children holding posters of AA…  While he looked calm on the outside, inside he was seething.  The news that the government would not accept him as team leader was a relief.  He felt confident Magus would do a better job of leading the team than he could.

While they had each been “created,” for the same purpose, to battle the Domain, Adamas was a dinosaur, created for brute strength and resilience.  He had been created for battle.  Magus appeared to have been created at a later time, and seemed better adapted to the current battle, one of strategy and planning.  Adamas longed to return to the Domain, and tear down that castle brick by brick to find and return his friend, but he knew he was needed here, now.

He had just realized that he was not randomly scanning the crowd with his enhanced vision, but looking for someone specific.  He was sure she had not been invited to this gathering, but just as sure that she would be there.  Where there were heroes gathered, Jessica was not far.  He had just found the WCTV van when Serena walked up, snapping him back to his present location.

“I am looking for Agent America, I wanted to ask to try to find Telecom,” she said with a smile.  Adamas features did not change as he responded.  “Agent America was lost in our recent foray into the Domain.  I do not believe he is dead, but I am not sure.  I realize he and Telecom were close, I’m sorry.”

Serena stated she was sorry too. “Losing teammates is never easy.”

On the other side of the conference room, "Hoo ha ha!  Now this looks like a fun gathering spot eh buddy?" Elwood shifted the two raincoats over to his left arm, draping them neatly as he reached into his vest for his trusty flask.  A gentle shake of the metal container gave him a look of satisfaction and back into the vest it went.  "This looks likely could be a party similar to the O'Sullivan funeral a few years back... Ha! Right you are Harvey! Hopefully it won't end in fisticuffs this time." Elwood stood tall attempting to look over the crowded room searching for something.  With a look over his shoulder he seemed to be listening to a speaker and in a moment responded, "No luck eh? Well let's introduce ourselves and see if some new friends can help with that... Just in case..." Elwood secured his flask once more and this time he took a healthy gulp.  He extended the flask out, "You sure?  OK. Perhaps we will get lucky and you can get that martini shortly."

As Skylark and Dreamweaver approached The Cure and Magus, Magus nodded his head slightly as if bowing before the two superheroines and said, "Good evening ladies". Standing before Skylark and Dreamweaver; with The Cure at his side, Magus continued, "Please allow me the honor of initial introductions, the young lady to my right is The Cure and I am Magus".

Mary nodded her head simply, waved hello to the two superheroines standing before her, and said plainly, "Hey."

Skylark and Dreamweaver introduced themselves to The Cure and Magus.

"Splendid, it’s truly a pleasure to . . .", before Magus can finish his thought, Elwood suddenly stumbled upon the small group of heroes.

Elwood, clad in his typical brown tweed suit, walked over to Skylark and Dreamweaver who were introducing themselves to Magus and Mary.  As Elwood approached the small group of superheroes, Mary said with a sigh, " . . . oh jeez."

Warmly Elwood slouched a bit and said, "Well hello there friends. My name is Elwood.  Harvey is quite impressed with your choice of garb.  Quite appealing and smart I would say.  Would any of you care to join us at the bar? Harvey is parched and has his furry heart set on a chilled martini. There is a bar here, isn't there?"

Skylark and Dreamweaver both look at each other then at Magus and The Cure. Dreamweaver said "Sorry, no bar. This isn't happy hour. We are waiting for the last arrivals then the briefing will start. Who is this Harvey you refer to and where is he?”

Knowing full well in which direction this conversation has the potential of going; in an aristocratically posh demeanor, Magus dipped his head a bit and placed his hand over his face as he whispered aloud, " . . . oh dear lord".

Without any disappointment in his voice Elwood looked over Dreamweaver's shoulder and said, "Sorry buddy.  We'll see Charlie later with a little luck." Then smiling warmly toward Dreamweaver he continued, "as you asked, I am very happy to tell you who Harvey is. (wink) Harvey is the most remarkable individual I have ever met, but you can be your own judge." With a gesture toward Dreamweaver, Elwood beckoned, "Harvey, please meet my newest friends Dreamweaver and Skylark." The enjoyment of meeting new folks and introducing them to his dearest companion was hard to hide and Elwood didn't try to hide it.

Seeing the excitement in Elwood's face, Mary turned to Magus as asked sarcastically, " . . . really?"

Seeing the look of utter confusion and disbelief run across both Skylark's and Dreamweaver's face, Magus immediately stepped in and readdresses the small group, " . . . err . . . yes . . . well . . . wasn't that just lovely . . . well, brilliant  . . . thank you once again for those introductions, Elwood". Before anyone else had a chance to question Elwood's sanity or make an inquiry about a bartender, Magus suddenly looked towards the front of the room and explained, "It would appear the last of the heroes are arriving. So they should be starting with the mission briefing soon". With his right hand extended towards the path leading to the front of the room, Magus turned to look at each member of the small group and asked, "Shall we"?

Of two of the figures entering the conference room, it was obvious to everyone they are martial artists. Only one is known to the other heroes. He is Lightning Fist.
He introduced his companion, Archer when they entered.
The majority of the heroes turn their attention back to Lightning Fist with the exception of three of them. Archer was keenly aware of the three sets of eyes focused on him. Those that studied him were Kali, Bishop Prince, and Enforcer.

Starbolt, The Wraith and Black Orchid recognized Archer. They had fought with him against the Crushers.

The other arriving heroes were the Crimson Guard from Canada.
With all the heroes finally arrived, Director of the DSA, William Gaunt walked up to the briefing podium he was joined by several of the U.S. Government leader of the different Agencies assigned to cover the various aspects of Meta-powered activities.

There were several large screens behind him.

“Welcome, I have invoked the powers of the Super Hero Act, specifically the Earth Protection Clause. For those unaware the events leading to this moment began 3 weeks ago. It began with what first appeared to be a tropical storm forming off the east coast of Florida. But meteorologists were puzzled by the speed at this it was growing, and it soon because clear that it was an entirely new phenomena and not an atmospheric disturbance at all. Aircrafts were dispatched to investigate, and that’s when the fireworks began …

“The Vortex, as it has been named by the administration, let loose with a concessive shock wave of gargantuan proportions. Many of the observation planes were lost in the sea, and none got close enough to the Vortex to shed any light on its origin. Meanwhile the shock wave wreaked havoc with ocean and weather conditions as far away as the coast of Norway.

“Now it became apparent that super powered assistance would be necessary in contending with the Vortex. CHESS contracted a trio of heroes it thought best suited for the mission to scout out the source of the disturbance. Blitzkrieg of the Super Society; Telecomm of Telecomm and the Valiants; and Meganaut of the Super Forces; did their patriotic duty, managing to transmit back that the Vortex centered around some sort of bizarre framework construction, hovering over the ocean floor and apparently sucking in everything around it, like a synthetic black hole.
“Their report included some video of the tower itself, badly distorted due to interference at the source, yet apparently showing creatures of some sort at work on the machines on the tower. But near the end of their report the heroes were cut off in mid-sentence, and they have not been heard from since.

“CHESS researchers determined that in fourteen months the Vortex will have devoured one-eighth of the Earth’s total mass – quite enough to destroy most life on our planet. And within two years, the Earth would be utterly consumed. This sobering new brought immediate action from the United Nations, and thus a massive nuclear warhead was launched into the Vortex. Whether or not it actually detonated is unclear, but there was absolutely no detectable effect. Most likely the Vortex simply sucked the nuclear blast itself.

“At this point the Soviet Union took matters into its own hands, sending their own superhero Gravitron to the site of the phenomena.
“He used his Gravity Control powers to create an opposing black hole, and the resulting blast was only slightly less intense than he initial shockwave. The Vortex disappeared, apparently at the cost of Gravitron’s life – winning for Moscow a propaganda victory which, for once, they actually seem to deserve.

“As the area returned to normal, a fishing trawler was found adrift with only half its crew still alive. These survivors told of their nightmarish experiences’ of slithering, oozing creatures that slew and ate their crewmates. It began with a terrific storm, during which they sighted a large structure in the middle of the ocean. Hoping it might be a port of safety they made their way toward it. But by the time they realized it wasn’t an oil rig or anything else of this Earth, terrible creatures were pouring down onto their vessel and eating both man and ship. The few who remain were saved only by a great explosion, which sucked the beast into it rather than knocking them away. The sailors swear that the creatures they saw were demons, ant the within the eye of the Vortex they could see the Devil himself.

“While the sailors leaned on their faith to explain who they saw, the truth is worse. The Devil’s fate is sealed but what they saw is not. Here is Mr. Delta to explain who and what is going on.”

Mr. Gaunt sat down. The man in the dark glasses and suit stood. He walked to the podium and started to speak.

“Every 666 years the dimension of the Domain comes into close proximity with the plane of Earth. This arrangement lasts for only a short time, but during these periods small passageways open between the two planes. One of the masters of the Domain, who name is Cr’tegorf, has been unable to escape his realm since he was banished there eon ago. He craves access to the rest of the multiverse so that he may recapture it and rule it all as he once did long ago.

“Over the millennia he has come close to his goal, but has always failed to actually set foot beyond the Domain. Many of his emissaries and heralds have come through to prepare his way, but always the gateways have closed long before he could muster enough power to make the journey himself. He has not wasted these past six hundred years, however, and he has at last found a way. If he can create a living link form his universe though a portal leading to another universe then he could escape the Domain. This living link must be forged from millions of demons, and a great deal of energy is needed for those demons to be created.

“Three giant matter vacuums would be crated on the far ends of three dimensional tunnels, and the harvest of those matter vacuums would be used to feed the demon horde. The one of Earth was not the first but the last of the three.

“The first vacuum was set up in the Xorian sector, on the home planet of the Xareons. Here is Ambassador SHRREECH to brief us on their situation.” At that time the vegetable looking creature stood up. It held a device which it projected sound waves into.

Yes, the matter vacuum did not create a disturbance in our atmosphere until after it was online. We are a peaceful species. We do not have the trained forces to defeat the demons and shut the device down. We have petitioned you for help. I am thankful that your government agreed to send your Commander Astro and The Super Forces to our aid. They have been there for two weeks. They have stopped the invasion but have not been able to reach the Device. I am afraid we will not be able to shut it down anytime soon.”

SHRREECH sat down. Mr Delta said “The second was constructed on the planet Targo, home of the race of creatures called Gorgs. Ambassador Sllizzip would you provide us a status?”

The small, lithe lizard with metallic-looking scales and long eyestalks which was 3 feet in length stood up. “Unfortunately the Matter Vacuum was created in unoccupied region of our planet. Our military responded as soon as the threat was identified. We have successfully fought the demons and are driving them back. The matter vacuum’s defenses were too great. Since it can’t be assaulted directly we have come to earth for help. We have no talent for subterfuge. We thank earth for sending their specialists from medusa to help us”

Sllizzip sat down. Mr Delta said “As we have seen, the final vacuum was placed in the Bermuda Triangle on our home planet Earth. The Bermuda Triangle was chosen for its weak dimensional fabric, and when the tower there was destroyed Ct’tegort switch tactics.

“An invasion force entered Hallowed Hills. The Redeemers and The Chosen have successfully halted their advance.
“A second invasion force appeared in the Ukraine. Only with the super power might of the Red Guard has Russia been able to withstand the onslaught but the Demons are slowly marching on Moscow.”
At this point Rall stood up. He approached the podium. He stood significantly taller than Mr. Delta. “While these events were occurring GIANT continued to monitor the Earth from the space station. A week later we noticed usually accelerated tree growth in England. As the GIANT scientists focused on the area additional growth was identified. It confounded them at first because it shouldn’t be surviving where it was let alone growing. What was growing among the trees was corral. It was when a team was dispatched to gather samples was it discovered they were alien in origin. By then it was too late the trees and coral had surrounded Stonehenge. “

Rall sat back down. Mr Delta continued, “Stonehenge was chosen by Cr’tegorf as the next best alternative construction site for the Matter Vacuum.

“Working with Dr. Arcane we have identified what the trees and corral is. The trees are really ten story tall ambulatory spur-spine-shooting plant demons called Megaspur. The creatures do not move swiftly but pursue anything that comes near it. The Megaspur has two forms of attack. One is by shooting quills. The quills cover as 10 foot area when fired. The other is by striking with its branches. The branches have thorns which contain a poison. The poison shuts attacks the nervous system causing paralysis in the victim.

“The increase in Megaspur in the area is not from more entering from the Domain but from the Megaspur itself spewing exploding seed pods. When the pods explode it scatters seeds in a 5 foot radius area. Each seed is about the size of a softball. When a seed touches the ground, it will crack open and sprout little root-like tendrils that will search for a place that it can gain purchase, such as a cracked cement sidewalk or a pothole in the asphalt of the road. If allowed to grow each seed will generate a new fully grown Megaspur plant within 48 hours. The new Megaspur will not attack or become ambulatory until fully grown.

“The coral is a single gigantic sentient brain-coral, comprised of billions of tiny minds. The toughness varies where some locations it is as tough as Tungsten to other locations it is harder than Diatanium. The coral is sharp as a spear head so simply touching can cut the average person. The Coral’s massive intellect will not permit air traffic overhead. Any aircraft we have tried to fly over it has been brought down telekinetically at the edge of the Megaspur/Coral Forest. We have tried sending a teleporter passed it. He never appeared near the target location. We have no idea what happened to him.

“The destruction of the Stonehenge tower is essential, for it another Vortex forms only another here as powerful as Gravitron will be able to close the Vortex. To thwart Cr’tegort you must overcome the demons and their minions who are constructing the tower. Once these creatures have been neutralized the machines on the tower can easily be dismantled. There is a force field protecting the Tower. It can only be entered from the lower level entrance. You have only ten hours before the tower becomes operational, once you arrive at Stonehenge.

As Mr Delta finished the Director of MEDUSA moved to the side of the podium.

“We have been able to get a surveillance team past the Megaspur/Coral Forest. Unfortunately they are somehow able to see right through any disguise we try. We have been forced to perform long range surveillance only. We have discovered the tower has further protections around Stonehenge. Here is surveillance footage return by Eagle Eye, one of our few remaining operatives. The interference is getting worse from the site. While these were taken with the most modern technology we received the images in grainy Black & White.
At this point Mr. Delta continued with the briefing. “F.I.S.H agent have been scrying the site. We have determined that human cultist followers are manning all the defenses of the Tower except for the top. They are the Tarot Masters.

“The Tarot Masters are lead by the mysterious Lord Noman, a magician of great power. He has convinced a group of thugs and supervillains that an organization based upon the Tarot deck of fortune-telling cards would become very important in the future, and that they could be this organization. Using his powers and his over-powering charisma, Noman has made his group into a cult brotherhood which worships Cr’tegorf. Secret lairs work through the night in hidden locations making enchanted devices to equip the ‘Minor Arcana’, the combat wing of the Tarot Masters. Recruiting teams are scouring the slums and cities of the land for promising supervillains who match in some way the twenty-two chards in the Major Arcana.

“The Tarot Masters consist of two wings: the Minor and Major Arcana. The Minor Arcane will consist for four groups of 13 highly skilled warriors and agents, all armed with enchanted weaponry. Nine of these thirteen will be ordinary soldier types corresponding with the cards 2-10 in each of the four Tarot suits (Swords, Wands, Cups, and Pentacles), while the ‘nobility’ cards (The King, Queen, Knight, and Page) would be equipped with more formidable equipment and would be assigned special tasks related to running the suit/squad of warriors.

Leading the Minor Arcana would be the Aces, four supernaturally powered types who watch over the operation of the Minor Arcana and enforce discipline.
“Finally, the Major Arcana would all be supervillains with super-natural, magical, or Psionic powers. They act as free agents spreading the word of the Tarot and making Lord Noman’s dream of world power come true.

“Each of the Tarot Cards in the Major Arcana is a title so they have their own Names and Titles

“Lord Noman is The Magician. Oliver Danials, Criminal record in Eastern Europe, powers: Controls Weather and foresees future using a deck of Tarot cards

“Justice Avenger is Justice. No known identities, no criminal record, power: Enchanted Sword which shocks on contact

“Priestess is The High Priestess. She was an undercover agent for a top-secret military intelligence agency when she ran into the Magi of the Black Rose. Believed by the Agency to be a cover for a subversive group, she and her fellow agents raided the headquarters of the Magi. Cr’tegorf was not amused. He killed all of the agents but made her into the Priestess, his loyal servant. When they showed her photo DarkStar knew exactly which top-secret agency and who she was. It was MEDUSA and that was Captain Jackie Houston.

Somehow Lord Noman traveled back to her time. Convince her to come back to modern times. The ship, Blackfire, is 78½ feet long from stem to stern. Its keel is 55½ feet long. The breath of the ship is 26 feet. Its hold is 8 feet deep. The ship’s complement consists of 15 men.

“Along the port and starboard are five cannons each. These are enchanted and now hit with the intensity of a power blast. The ship can fly at any height. It appears to navigate by the wind in its sails.

“The weapons carried by the crew are swords and enchanted flintlocks which doubles the weapons impact.

“This is the first time all four suits of the Minor Arcana and the Major Arcana have assembled together.

Above Mr. Delta, Psimon’s astral projection appeared.
Everyone heard him speak in their mind. “There are telepaths in the Major Arcana. I have been unable to determine their plans beyond the order of their defense. The Pentacles will be outside the tower. Swords in be in the first floor. Cups on the second, Wands on the third, and Demons from the Domain protect the fourth.”

General Samuel informed the gathered assembly they are about to see is Classified Special Access Need to Know information. They have been cleared by their DSA licenses but they are never to share this information. On the screen behind a video starts playing. It is showing a tank that none have ever seen before.

General Samuel said, “This is the M-5Q tank. The tank is twenty feet wide by thirty feet long, twelve feet high. It weighs about one hundred tons. It has a maximum speed of 200 feet but can only use its guns effectively under 100 feet in ten seconds. It can reach its maximum speed in 10 seconds. It slows down by 60 feet each 10 seconds. Because it is a bulky tank, it can only turn 180O in 10 seconds. It can’t stop or start on a dime.

“The Tank has several weapons:
·         Laser Quad-Mount. This gun is mounted atop the tank, in a turret with a 360O sweep with a range of 250 feet. It has twenty four blasts before it needs to be recharge.
·         Flamethrower. One is mounted on each side of the tank. The weapon shoots a five foot wide, 25 feet long gout of flame. The flamethrowers can be set on automatic, shooting at the nearest object within 15 feet every other round. Each flamethrower has a magazine with sixteen shots.
·         Missile Launcher: This two-tube rack can shoot two types of shells. Normal Rockets (range of 1,000 feet) and Seeker Rockets. Seeker Rockets are deadly: two are normally fired at a time. The missiles are robot-guided. The missiles ‘see’ in the infrared, ultraviolet, and by radar, so certain invisibility types will not be effective against the missiles.
·         Force Field: When the tank is not firing weapons, it can put up a force field that takes blocks physical and energy attacks.
·         Holograms: The tank can put up 30 ft x 30 ft x 20 ft hologram to disguise or camouflage itself. The projection extends into the ultraviolet and infrared, neutralizing certain types of heightened senses. At distant ranges of 250 ft plus the hologram may be used as a sort of invisibility.

“The M-5Q requires at least two people to run at all; with this minimum crew only one attack per 10 seconds may be made. Each extra crewman up to the limit of five allows two extra attacks. The flamethrowers may be put on automatic, firing every twenty seconds on their own, but each other attack or rocket launched requires the attention of the crew. Flamethrowers and the missile launcher may be shot each action; the laser may only be shot once every 10 seconds. Each tank can carry 20 troops as a transport.

“The British will engage the Magaspurs with their Crown Guard super team.

“We will use the M-5Q tanks to carry you past the Coral. Once past you will disembark. You will engage their defenses. Your object is to get past them and inside the Tower. You will destroy the Matter Vacuum.”

“I need to speak with the leaders of the Super Teams of Crimson Guard, Crusaders, Indestructibles, Guardians, and Super Society.” General Samuel led them into a side conference rooms. Seeker, Manta Man, Armorman Jr, Magus, and Gale joined the General at the display table. “I need you decide if you will keep your teams together or will new teams that are designed to specific threats be created.”

“We need teams to attack these threats:
·         The Chariot.
·         The Minor Arcana Pentacles squad
·         The Major Arcana guarding the Towers entrance
·         The Major Arcana providing air cover to the others

“If you see anything else we need to address please mention them as well.

“Please work together to devise your battle plan, feel free to invite any of the other heroes to help if you think it will be a benefit. I will need your plan within the hour.”  With that General Samuel left the conference room

Thomas,

Very Nice, I'll respond, didn't see Darkstar's xp, John's not leaving the group is he?  I guess I could ask him, but I thought you might just be doing him separately, so I didn't want to say anything in case it was an oversight.

Jon Hammonds

PS, Loved the gathering of hero's pic, I'm going to have it laminated and hang it on my wall. :)

Jon (Adamas)

Several of you have asked what happened to DarkStar. His story was separate but he is with your PCs at CHESS HQ.  Here is his story

Tom
--------------------------------------------------------------
Great Issue, Tom! For some reason I didn't see the mission ending as fast as it did - not that I mind - I just expected a knock-down drag-out brawl spanning half way across The Domain before we managed to escape back to Earth for some weird reason lol

Completely AWESOME ending by the way - TOTALLY did not see that mega-team-up thing coming - very cool! I do have a few questions though . . .

1. Did John/DarkStar leave The Quest? I ask because I didn't see his name on this e-mail, and I didn't see Experience Points listed for him.

2. Will we be able to talk with the other PC members of the other Megalopolis games IC? If so, could you give all the teams a list of all the various players in the different campaigns and their players e-mails? Maybe one big e-mail?

3. Who is going to lead this Avengers/JLA type team-up team? C.H.E.S.S.?

4. As for level advancement, you wrote "With every level increase, a character may add the equivalent of ½ of a full Super Power. The character’s attribute can be improved by 7 points ( i.e. Strength increased from 16 to 23 ) or two attributes can be improved by 3 points each." - does that mean we get the equivalent of ½ of a full Super Power AND the chance to raise a character’s attribute(s)?

Talk to you guys soon,

-Kev (Magus)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. John is still playing with DarkStar. Since the majority of the issue he was separate from the Team, I created him a separate issue. I sent it to you.
2. Will do, look for that email
3. We will role play out who gets leadership
4. No, it is OR. So if you choose to increase your attribute(s) as your 1/2 Super Power you will get either 7 or 3 & 3 increase.

Gauntlet walked over to DarkStar. "I like you arm bracers. They look nice do they also have a functional purpose as well?"

Serena walked over to Adamas. "I am looking for Agent America. I wanted to ask to try to find Telecom."

Shatterman walked up with Condor and Red Hawk to Black Orchid and Starbolt. "Hi I saw you walk in with the Crusaders. I am a former team member. I am Shatterman. This is Condor and Red Hawk."

Skylark and Dreamweaver introduce themselves to The Cure, Elwood, and Magus.

Enforcer stood next to The Wraith. He eyes looking forward, "Nice suit."

<DarkStar: IC> (After having been thankfully healed by the lovely Cure and checking the condition of Cybil in a special vault underneath the StarCorp Tower, Joshua teleports back to the Doctor Avery's mansion and finds himself sitting with the Team in the meeting room where it all began two years ago.) "I was all set to go with Nigel's suggestion of the Fellowship from last year when I heard The Assembled mentioned. Honestly these are all great team names. It might come as a surprise to some of you who have known me for a while (insert self-deprecating smile), but I have to admit to a bit of egotism. I want our name to have a strong appeal to it. We are the strongest (oldest) active group of heroes  (player characters) assembled for Megalopolis and I think when people see our name they should associate that with this world's mightest heroes. Is there anyone else who might have something to add before I vote?"

OOC: Headed to my folks for dinner but will vote later tonight assuming all things in the universe hold together. Been one of those weeks today. Promise to read any replies before I vote. Have resisted temptation to read Quest Issues so far as hope to get a little RP out of the deal :) Was very fun issue for DarkStar Tom. First time I really felt he was in potentially mortal danger - LOVED IT

I've got a few more questions for you, Tom - sorry

How did you want to handle Magus coming up with new spells? Inventing? Level-Up's ( new spell = his 1/2 super-power )? Something entirely different maybe - role play it out somehow perhaps ( e.g. spending a couple of weeks/months studying with Dr. Arcane in-between adventures )?

Would learning new Skills be an option as well for leveling-up, or did you want to role play that out or something?

Can we 'buy down' a Weakness as well during leveling-up instead of acquiring a 1/2 super-power or something?

-Kev (Magus)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
No problem on the questions, bring them on.

How did you want to handle Magus coming up with new spells? Inventing? Level-Up's ( new spell = his 1/2 super-power )? Level-up for 1/2 super-power. On occasion you could use Invention points but then it would be 1/4 super-power and time will have to be spent studying with Dr. Avery.

Would learning new Skills be an option as well for leveling-up, or did you want to role play that out or something? Yes new skills are part of leveling up. Each level you can add about 3 new skills or increase the effectively of existing skills. I should have mentioned it in the prior email but I forgot.

Can we 'buy down' a Weakness as well during leveling-up instead of acquiring a 1/2 super-power or something? Yes, a Weakness is a choice for leveling up, so it can be done instead of acquiring a 1/2 super-power.

Best

Hey T

Seriously +7 on a stat? Sign Big Blue up for gymnastic classes at the local Y for his Lvl  advancement ;-) (or not lol)

Onto more fun stuff. For the reply to Gauntlet and his general RP style, I need to know if Cybil passes all her diagnostic test Mr, Paranoid runs after getting her home. I plan on writing DarkStar's first Side Shot in ages and as always he works best when he has his trusty electronic sentient sidekick to bounce thoughts off of and run research and analysis.

OOC: Tom and friends, I started with both characters initial responses and took a couple liberties. Please adjust as continuity would dictate. I left a hint for us to build on the other project we spoke of, and really tried to work in a Maxima reference. I’ll just have to leave that for later it didn’t feel natural to add it yet. Otherwise I’ll have to say batter up. Condolences on your Rangers demise pal.

[Gauntlet walked over to DarkStar. "I like your arm bracers. They look nice do they also have a functional purpose as well?"]

<DarkStar IC: Response and Actions>

*Whoump*

Arriving with the team at the coordinates they had been given, Commander Rose takes a second to survey the crowd, and being almost a foot taller than most the individuals in the auditorium made that fairly easy to do.

A few of the heroes needed no introduction and the slim athletic man walking toward him was such a man. Gauntlet … a veteran of the business. The story the Commander of GIANT had shared with him about the man’s exploits with Stormbringer was enough to warrant his instant respect. “It’s a pleasure to meet you sir … my bracers?” A small smile slips from DarkStars lips. “Yes they do, but not one you might think.”

“Cybil say hello to the Gauntlet. I believe he’s an acquaintance of the Commander. Gauntlet, meet my almost constant companion and most trusted colleague … Cybil for Cybernetic Interactive Logic-system. Cybil let’s show Gauntlet what you can do. Would you please tap into Scion and generate a holographic real-time representation on the downtown area around our current location?” Almost instantly, DarkStar’s ever ready AI projects a small but easily discernible three dimensional image of a three block radius around the CHESS headquarters.Looking closer Gauntlet can see the tiny automobiles moving up and down the city streets.

[Shatterman walked up with Condor and Red Hawk to Black Orchid and Starbolt. "Hi I saw you walk in with the Crusaders. I am a former team member. I am Shatterman. This is Condor and Red Hawk."]

<Red Hawk IC: Response and Actions> Red Hawk keeps behind Dennis and Brian. He didn’t want to intrude and was distracted as he noticed a couple of the New Super Society team members looking this direction. They know. A friendly nod toward the two new Crusaders, he leaned over and shook hands with the spearhead of the team that had taken down the Crushers. “Nice job putting away Mocker.” The irony that the sonic-villain was an artificial life form like his self was not lost on Chris.

Red Hawk tilts his head, trying to give his auditory sensors a better angle. I swear I heard … Looking into the auditoriums ceiling, he zooms his visual focus and adjust them for the low light levels. Hmmm … nothing. I thought for sure I saw something. Turning back to the small group, Chris listens to the confidence that the shining Starbolt speaks with and wonders if he’ll ever ‘feel’ that self-assured.

DarkStar reply IC: Thoughts of the bio-tracking program spring into Joshua's mind, and his current exhuberance is tempered by the too brief encounter with Maxima, "I looked into adding that particular feature, but the DSH informed me that I might end up being in violation of a number of civil liberties if it ever became known I were doing such a thing." Laughing at the idea of Cybil ever ordering pizza DarkStar good naturedly claps Gauntlet on the shoulder "Why order pizza, when you can teleport to Palermo to Juliette's for real Sfincione"

You wouldn't really let DarkStar boost any of his stats by 7 would you? Ouch LOL

LOL. gotya. So a graduated scale with diminishing returns. I think DS and Archer (alpha version) have been great lessons for me as a GM on how to NOT to do or allow certain things in character creation. I'm looking forward to getting to re-play the rebuilt Archer.

Speaking of ... I never could find the full skill list he had. The one with his ninja like skills. Want me to submit a ret-con of skills I'd like for him or just reuse the old ones if you can dig them up?

Getting some nice response from everyone in CHESS hq. although I'm not sure what Jon was getting at with the kids and posters. I need to retread it maybe

"Hello, I'm The Black Orchid." She shakes hands with any willing to do so. "I was called in to help with the Crusader situation, but I'm not a member or anything like that. I've been working directly for CHESS so far. Starbolt is much more involved than I am. Now I've heard of you and Condor, before and..." She notices Red Hawk looking up and looks up herself. Not really seeing anything, she continues the conversation. "Well anyway, I guess I'm a little confused as to why we're all here again. It seems we took care of most of the Crushers threat although we might have missed somebody. I feel like I missed something or somebody there, but I'm not sure." She shakes her head for a moment to clear her mind. "So do you like working on your own now instead of being part of a group?"

Starbolt navigates the room introducing himself to the assembled heroes either singularly or in groups. The Stellar-Powered Sentinel will be cordial and respectful to all that he speaks to. To himself he thinks, "No way this is small. You don't gather this many heroes for something unless it is BIG."

Tom,
I have been going back and forth on the power aspect. Thinking Cosmic awareness or some sort of sensory enhancement or solid illusions. What are your thoughts? I want my character to have something that would be useful to the group and not step on any toes. I would like to bounce some ideas off of you.

Thanks,
Jamey (Starbolt)
-----------------------------------------------------------
Gladly, I would recommend against Cosmic Awareness because it is very disappointing as the rules are written. Sensory Enhancement or Solid Illusions would work well. Let me know what your ideas are

Tom
------------------------------------------------------------
I was trying to think of which would be more beneficial to the group. What do you think. as far as sensory probably something along the lines increased detect danger or hidden.
Sincerely,
Jamey (Starbolt)
----------------------------------------------------------------
I am thinking the ability to create Solid Illusions would be more beneficial. There are several characters with high detect danger or hidden. It would also fit Starbolt's protect other first style.  I am thinking of Solid Illusions that work as Barriers and Walls.

If you like the idea I have some ideas of how to do it using the Solid Illusions rules and the Force Field rule from the V&V 3.0 draft rules.

I like it. It fits in with his Quasar/Green Lantern inspiration. I know he has that Captain Marvell look, But he was inspired by Quasar, Green Lantern, StarBrand, and Mar-vell.

OOC: I was a little surprised with the abruptness of the exit from the Domain.  I was not planning on leaving without Agent America, but I realize sometimes things happen for a reason, and I know Jeff needed to take a break, so I’m just playing this out, not complaining at all.  All top notch! Can’t wait to see what you have in store for us.
For Level Advancement, I hate to waste another level on sight enhancement if it’s never going to work.  I’m already reviewing micro-organisms on the ground from space, but if another level will allow him to see our invisible friend, I’ll go with it.  If not, I think Adamas will begin working with Doctor Arcane and Magus to see if he can reduce his weakness to magic… at character creation, I hadn’t realized what a liability that would be, and I think it makes sense that they would be able to help him.  Magus doesn’t have that weakness, so maybe it was something that wasn’t completed in Adamas creation, or some mystical portal left open…
IC:  Adamas stood away from the crowd, his face stoic.
He had just found the WCTV van when Serena walks up, snapping him back to his present location.

Jon (Adamas)
----------------------------------------------------------
Let go with reduction of his weakness to magic. I will think about it this weekend about what that would mean.

While we could increase Adamas' vision it would not benefit him as much as the dealing with his weakness.

Also I don't want to diminish Larry's PCs any by having another PC besides Elwood being able to see Harvey. It is the core of their characters.
Tom
--------------------------------------------------------------
Adamas will find Jessica inside a different conference room where CHESS is allowing select reporters in for a briefing of their own.

Let me know if Adamas will talk to her before or after his briefing.

Tom
--------------------------------------------------------------
I reviewed his character sheet. For his level advancement we can remove the weakness to Magic on his Invulnerability leaving only Mental damage.

Here are my thoughts on how it work for Adamas. He was made by magic so his protection from harm didn't protect him from magic. Simply he was made by magic so he could be unmade by magic.

To remove the weakness I was thinking that Magus with Dr. Arcane's help could use magic to reshape his Invulnerability "wards/protection" to protect against magic itself. I was thinking Kev might like to write up with you of it happening. It would occur the evening or the next morning before the Guardians leave for CHESS HQ.

How does this sound?

IC:
"Hoo ha ha!

Elwood, clad in his typical brown tweed suit, walked over to Skylark and Dreamweaver who were introducing themselves to Magus and Mary.

Who is this Harvey you refer to and where is he?
Tom
---------------------------------------------------------------
IC:

OOC:
Tom, I could do this all day long so go ahead and edit down as you see fit.

Thanks,

---------------------------------------------------------------------
Tom

I am undecided on what to do with the level advancement so I thought I would run some ideas by you to see what you think.

Broadly speaking, my goal is to either make Elwood a well liked person (the way I see Jimmy Stewart) or to make Harvey's powers reflect my image of him from the movie (he seems to know a lot and has a way of effecting people).  Here is how this could happen:

Raise Elwood's charisma to make him even more likable.

Give Harvey a limited version of telepathy to allow him to hear other's thoughts but without the ability to use any of the other typical benefits.

Give Harvey the power of "suggestion" allowing him to influence others.

Increase Harvey's intelligence.  This is my least favorite option.

What do you think?  Since I think you enjoy these characters as demonstrated from some of your ad-libbing with them (which I have very much enjoyed) I value your opinion.

Thanks,
Mike (Harvey & Elwood)
---------------------------------------------------------------------
I have taken time to think on it. Here is the order I think.

1. Limited Telepathy
2. Power of Suggestion
3. Elwood's Charisma increased.
4. Harvey's intelligence increased.

I think Elwood is very likable based on how he is role played. There hasn't been a situation when he is trying to influence NPCs I really rely on your role play more than I do a dice roll. So Elwood is extremely likeable.

I think both Telepathy and the Suggestion powers are good. It makes more sense for Harvey to be able to read a NPC's mind and then use that information to influence him (when he gains the power of course).

I agree that Harvey doesn't need his INT increased.

I will write up his Probe ability this week to see how you like it.

FISH DEBRIEF

IC:  Magus provides the FISH agents with a thorough and detailed report of The Guardians trip to The Domain. He also explains that the rescue of Agent America is his top priority at the moment, and that after he and his team have had a chance to rest and re-equip themselves; they were headed back to The Domain as soon as possible.

CHESS HQ

Kevin OOC:
Mike and Tom,  I hope you don't mind ( I'm pretty sure you won't ), I'm going to have a little fun with this - we can 'undo' this of course if either of you don't care for the way it flows.

Mike IC:  "Hoo ha ha!

Kevin IC:  As Skylark and Dreamweaver approach The Cure and Magus, Magus nods his head slightly as if bowing before the two superheroines and says, "Good evening ladies". Standing before Skylark and Dreamweaver; with The Cure at his side, Magus continues, "Please allow me the honour of initial introductions, the young lady to my right is The Cure and I am Magus".

Kevin OOC:  Skylark and Dreamweaver introduce themselves to The Cure and Magus.

Kevin IC:  "Splendid, It's truly a pleasure to . . .", before Magus can finish his thought, Elwood suddenly stumbles upon the small group of heroes.

Mike IC:  Elwood, clad in his typical brown tweed suit, walked over to Skylark and Dreamweaver who were introducing themselves to Magus and Mary.

Tom IC:  Skylark and Dreamweaver both look at each other then at Magus and The Cure. Dreamweaver said "Sorry, no bar. This isn't happy hour. We are waiting for the last arrivals then the briefing will start. Who is this Harvey you refer to and where is he?

Kevin IC:  Knowing full well in which direction this conversation has the potential of going; in an aristocratically posh demeanor, Magus dips his head a bit and places his hand over his face as he whispers aloud, " . . . oh dear lord".

Mike IC:  Without any disappointment in his voice Elwood looked over Dreamweaver's shoulder and said, "Sorry buddy.

Kevin IC:  Seeing the look of utter confusion and disbelief run across both Skylark's and Dreamweaver's face, Magus immediately steps in and readdresses the small group, " . . . err . . . yes . . . well . . . wasn't that just lovely . . . well, brilliant  . . . thank you once again for those introductions, Elwood". Before anyone else has a chance to question Elwoods sanity or make an inquiry about a bartender, Magus suddenly looks towards the front of the room and explains, "It would appear as if they're going to start with the mission breifing". With his right hand extended towards the path leading to the front of the room, Magus turns to look at each member of the small group and asks, "Shall we"?

OOC: Larry, Mike. Tom - if you want to keep this going / modify it / etc. - go for it!

Talk to all of you soon,

---------------------------------------------------------------
OOC: Larry's IC response was simple and sweet thankfully! I mixed his IC response into what Mike and I have already sent out.
Kevin OOC:
Mike and Tom,  I hope you don't mind ( I'm pretty sure you won't ), I'm going to have a little fun with this - we can 'undo' this of course if either of you don't care for the way it flows.

Mike IC:  "Hoo ha ha!

Larry IC: Mary nods her head simply, waves hello to the two superheroines standing before her, and says plainly, "Hey."

Larry IC: As Elwood approached the small group of superheroes, Mary said with a sigh, " . . . oh jeez."

Mike IC: Warmly Elwood slouched a bit and said, "Well hello there friends. My name is Elwood.  Harvey is quite impressed with your choice of garb.  Quite appealing and smart I would say.  Would any of you care to join us at the bar? Harvey is parched and has his furry heart set on a chilled martini. There is a bar here, isn't there?"

Larry IC: Seeing the excitement in Elwood's face, Mary turned to Magus as asked sarcastically, " . . . really?"

Before anyone else has a chance to question Elwood's sanity or make an inquiry about a bartender, Magus suddenly looks towards the front of the room and explains, "It would appear as if they're going to start with the mission briefing". With his right hand extended towards the path leading to the front of the room, Magus turns to look at each member of the small group and asks, "Shall we"?

Larry said a PR reduction from 8 to 4 sounds great!

My apologies for my lateness.

I'll save my advancement.  In the room full of heroes and all around strange, strange people, The Wraith feels uncomfortable.  Does he want to join this group?  Any group?  After his assault he's had trouble trusting....anybody, really.  He stays in the background, even in the shadows if there are any, trying to maintain a low profile.

But for now, he is staying.  If there's trouble this big, requiring this many heroes, he wants to know what it is.

Thanks,

Greg

Just noticed something,

Not sure how DS will handle Magus being "named" team leader. Not only is he the 'neewbie',  his weakness could translate to a team weakness if played fully. Which I would expect of Kev. I would if I was him

I actually I think Cmdr Joshua Rose would have the least trouble of them all. Just like in the Navy or MEDUSA, new Officers are assigned to units all the time; some of them are the least experienced individual in the group if not completely green. He might grumble under his breath but that would be it, wouldn't it.

Thanks
Tom
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Morning guys

I see why you'd think that Tom. If Rose were still in the military and this was a military operation you'd be right on target. As Dr Arcane is fond of pointing out this is not a military operation. And where does the government get off thinking they can name the new guy team leader? Who do they think they are, the BSI?

Like any meta-team the Guardians are purely voluntary, on a day to day basis. As a character Rose has two problems with Magus taking over. Magus has shown almost no experience or expertise for the job. No experience as a "hero", no experience with the team, and as of yet shown no experience in his background that qualifies him for leading a special ops style combat squad.

Secondly his attitude/persona. A big one is he wouldn't consider the option of a disguise because it was dishonorable and during the Domain adventure the character would shout orders after Adamas already had given instructions to do something. The first indicates a character that won't utilize the best tools in the box to get the job done and the second is confusing and dangerous in combat. Not team leader material.

Regardless what he thinks of me, I think Kev is a good RPer and expect him to play that Low Self Control to the hilt. I would with my character, and it would make my character just as dangerous team leader.

. . . and DarkStar thinks Adamas did a great job. His personality is one that brings people together. He likes Adamas and there isn't a lot of people he can say that about. So for now at least government be damned Magus is a figure head for the pencil pushers. Until events make it otherwise DS will follow Adamas lead when the situation calls for team work.

It's okay though. Wolverine didn't think Cyclops was much of a leader at first either

Late you two
John
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Okay, thanks, this makes sense. I keep thinking that DarkStar wants to leave the superhero world and get back the military way of life because of how quickly he always gets back to it. His entire approach to entering the Domain was military based not superhero based.

Unfortunately part of the problem with the leadership change is my writeup. The reason Adamas is not leader is because of his weakness not bigoted Earthers. DarkStar notices a significant change in Adamas when they return. His confidence is lost. He is having difficulty understanding all the FISH agents are saying (English is like his 3th language), in fact he doesn't even speak to them.

This leaves Magus or DarkStar to lead. Magus has a Charisma of 19, is Dr. Arcane's protege, and fully understands Magic. DarkStar has Charisma of 15, is a man of science and commerce, and rejects being a superhero (as evidenced by his wearing para-military [StarCorp] attire). Who do you think F.I.S.H. would look toward leadership?
I received my last players turn yesterday so I still have time to get a response from DarkStar on this issue. I would really like to get this in. Basically DarkStar wants to see Adamas lead but is shocked at the change in Adamas on his return and the obvious relief that Adamas has that the FISH agents are looking to Magus for leadership and not to him. Basically Adamas is glad he is no longer leader and it shows (to DarkStar and others close to him).

Jon, if you want to throw something in as well that would be awesome.

Also DarkStar sees the FISH agents notice his attire and are not pleased to see it. Also it might be fun for DarkStar to try to talk a little science to them and for DarkStar to feel like he is being talked to by Adults who think of him as a Kindergartener.

To help you get in a frame of mind. Think of how DarkStar would react if a Wizard entered his lab to do an experiment. DarkStar would start down the path of scientific research (hypothesis, observe, test, correlate, replicate) and the Wizard ask "Why are you doing this. All you have to do is bend the elements to your will. All you have to do is want it bad enough, use a reagent, say the magic words, and it happens as you will it" Before joining the Quest wouldn't DarkStar have treated him as a child who believed all you would have to do is "Wish it and It will come true."  That is the same attitude that FISH agents see scientists.

Simply DarkStar can secretly support Adamas as leader and wait for Adamas to lead but he will become frustrated because Adamas won't. His weakness won't allow him to. No more than DarkStar can heal without sunlight.

Tom
----------------------------------------------------------
Well spoken, that's pretty much spot on for Adamas.  I had never intended him to be the leader, but was OK if it was needed.

Kevin will do a great job I'm sure, he never does anything half way.

Jon
------------------------------------------------------------
I'm sure Kev will have great fun with the role :)

no experience with the team, and as of yet shown no experience in his background that qualifies him for leading a special ops style combat squad.

This is why I keep thinking that DarkStar is thinking in military terms. This isn't a special ops style combat squad it is a Super Hero Team. They are very different.

A big one is he wouldn't consider the option of a disguise because it was dishonorable

Another interesting fact (which I don't know whether DarkStar would know or not) is that Disguise don't work with Magus. He can instantly see right through them. So it is natural for him to not consider taking an action which will automatically fail if it was done to him. This will be interesting to see how this plays out.

That's cool Tom I think it's just we look at playing the game from a different PoV. Hope my half baked post during lunch explained my thought process a little, but in reality I like the fact you think I have DS in a groove and plan on keeping him there for the most part.

DarkStar would not know and if he did Im not sure it would affect his idea that it makes Magus potentially bad leader material. He will wait and see if it continues to affect them team effectiveness. ie How kev plays it, lol   I'm sure it will make for fun RP in the Machinst/Rampart nature (if he wants)

Keeping in the Groove

Hey Guys

My phones not suited to this kind of reply. Later I'd like to explain why I compare special ops and hero teams. It's a POV thing I think. Regardless I perfectly understand the FISH thing and don't have a problem with Magus OOC. IC I'll try and keep the friction fun RP. Ask Kev if he minds I play wolverine to his cyclops. If he's not up for it I'll keep it even more subdued. Don't want to play that up if he’s not into the idea. I'm good either way. Ill craft some stuff tonight before basketball and have it in before 7pm Tom

All is well

--------------------------------------------------------------------
Hey All

I thought I'd share a PoV of how/why some/all of my characters respond to some scenarios like they do. You all know I was in the Navy.  So most of my ideas are the result of second hand information or personal study. I've so played various tabletop war games over the years that I'm sure influence my thought process. I'm sure if I had Dom's background I'd be better at the analogy

That super team tactics should closely resemble small combat squads.

I'm just talking organization and tactics in combat. Outside of combat it's a totally different story.  In combat though ... whether it’s a family team, a govt team or a team of misfits, in combat they should want to operate as effectively as possible. Effective depends on the mission. Extraction, infiltration, o straight up combat some aspects are universal and must be addressed.

Transport
Communication
Application of force

Whether it’s a quintet a transporter or flat out hoofing it. You always want to have the edge of Manu stability.

The team needs solid communication to act and react effectively to the situation as it progresses and changes. Telepath. Comm-links or hand signals. Communication should be short precise and follow a chain of command. Too much communication in combat can be as dangerous as not enough. It's imperative for the squad to react with speed and timing.

Application of force and the variables that entails is a bit much for lunch post but needless to say it never hurts to prioritize your targets or to have a heavy weapon expert ie Thor, Hulk, Superman etc. also things like Combined Arms can be applied ie combining air support (Storm) with ground troops (Cyclops) and Recon (Wolverine) is another aspect for later.

My characters like DarkStar and Rampart are ex military and will always apply the lessons they learned in the military when approaching combat. The thing is taking their an their team mates special abilities and trying to apply those principles to make the team a better fighting force. Which is what super teams most often do.

Many of the principles of combat tactics are utilized the same regardless o if it's military law enforcement or in many ways fire fighters and field medics. So even if superheroes are civilians. When they join a team and that team is engaged in a combat situation they should borrow tactics from those they resemble closest. Combat Squads. Generally consist between 5 to 7 men. About th same as your average superhero team.

Or that's at least partially my take on super team combat. Best I can do on my phone at least.

Good day friends

Does DarkStar change clothes before going to CHESS? Is he still wearing his StarCorp security fatigues/para-military attire?

Tom
------------------------------------------------------------------
Hey Pal

If he knows/learns the meeting at CHESS is about the Domain he will change into fresh StarCorp fatigues. At this point it seems government got their head out of their backside and finally realize level of the threat the Domain is. If he is not made privy to the nature of the meet, he will change into his 'hero' uniform. Will also call for increased security after learning the number of 'players' at the 'game'.

Hope that works

Okay, thanks, this makes sense. I keep thinking that DarkStar wants to leave the superhero world and get back the military way of life because of how quickly he always gets back to it. His entire approach to entering the Domain was military based not superhero based.

DarkStar, saw the Domain adventure as a military behind enemy lines style rescue operation. I've thought about this a little more. Depending on the nature of the "mission" DarkStar is assigned/involved in/takes on. If he is going to be battling in the public eye he will be in his "hero" uniform. If he is doing espionage, commando, stuff he will stick with the StarCorp battle fatigues, Mainly because I think it’s cool you went to trouble to make the image. He uses the hero image because its expected and good for the corporate image. He will always be more comfortable in boots, jeans, flannel shirt and a cowboy hat Close to what I said earlier I guess just more thought out.

Man I wish we had the time to have played some of this out, but will go with the flow ... reluctantly (lol).

Basically Adamas is glad he is no longer leader and it shows (to DarkStar and others close to him).

DarkStar IC: Not bothering to hide his frustration with the government sticking their nose in the Guardians business, Joshua focuses his thoughts through the Amulet to Dr. Arcane. "What the hell is going on her Doc'? The F.I.S.H. suddenly decides the Domain's a threat worthy of their omniscient attention and they're the ones deciding who leads the Guardians? . . . and a damned rookie with one battle under his belt at that? I see Adamas is relieved, and Magus is your boy, but he's got some big ass boots to fill ... and in a hurry from the sound of that request from CHESS. If you think he's ready Doc', I'll give him the same kind of support I gave AA when you named him team leader. FISH can kiss my big blue butt though. This has always been you're creation. The day it starts becoming a government operation, I'm out of here.

DarkStar IC: Walking to his roof to change his uniform back at StarCorp Tower, DarkStar sees the FISH agents looking at his attire and are not pleased to see it. "Kiss off." (OOC: He's in that kind of mood after returning from the Domain and losing AA. So much for the science talk - lol - he knows by now how people like Solomon, Pietor, and the like think on him. Unless it's Doc or Adamas he just doesn't care.)

To help you get in a frame of mind. Think of how DarkStar would react if a Wizard entered his lab to do an experiment. DarkStar would start down the path of scientific research (hypothesis, observe, test, correlate, replicate) and the Wizard ask "Why are you doing this. I feel he's picked up on that with his conversations with Donnah and Doc. He gets that he'll never really "get it" and he's okay with that. It's the one thing he realizes he'll never understand. He doesn't even need to rationalize like AA did. His attitude is more along the lines "It works like this? Okay let's move on then"

Simply DarkStar can secretly support Adamas as leader and wait for Adamas to lead but he will become frustrated because Adamas won't. His weakness won't allow him to. No more than DarkStar can heal without sunlight.

That's the plan. DarkStar is really about supporting his friends. Once through RP it becomes clear Adamas is happier this way and Magus proves he can handle the job then DarkStar's attitude will adjust. It won't just happen magically (or overnight) though ... or maybe it will (lol)

There you go Tom hope that's what you were looking for. I'm really amped about the next set of Issues.

Knock knock.  The Titan of transport opens up the CHESS administrator’s office door. Looking in, he sees a table surrounded by the best minds in the business.  Appreciating the diligence these men were putting into organizing this gathering of heroes before mobilizing a group that surpassed even the Super Forces. "You guys about ready? Troops are starting to get a bit restless."

OOC: Just kind of came to me and had to play that up a bit buddy. Take care and have a good weekend.

I kept getting confused why DarkStar keep thinking that FISH made Magus the leader. I went back to read last issue as I was writing up this issue.
---------------------------------
Last Issue:
Agents of FISH were there as well. Dr. Avery introduced the newest members to FISH. He indicated that Magus was the new leader with the loss of Agent America. The lead agent asked Magus for a debriefing on their trip to the Domain.
---------------------------------
Now I understand. In the sentence I wrote the "He" meant Dr. Avery. Avery indicated that Magus was the new leader not the FISH Agent deciding on a leader.

Do you want to keep the misunderstanding or straighten it out before I write the new issue?

Thanks
Tom

{GM Note: Adamas weakness has come into play. The officials of Earth will not recognize him as leader.. In Earth’s dimension Magus is now the recognized leader of The Team}

I "assumed" FISH's refusal to recognize Adamas as the Team leader (due to his weakness) was the reason Dr. Avery gave Magus the title of "leader". If that "assumption" is correct . . . then what you have is DarkStar feeling FISH needs to "mind their own damn business."

Now that assumption and DarkStar's reaction is as much a result of the GM note as anything else. I wish we had time to have role-played through the post-Domain, but like the Pietor becoming Doc Apoc it just wasn't feasible. I feel comfortable that even though it is a "GM note" it is information that would have come out through role-play given the opportunity. If you agree then keep everything as it is. If you think I played off GM information incorrectly then please by all means delete it and we can just go with the flow from here.

I'm good with whatever you think makes for a more interesting storyline Tom
