Crusade: Issue 89 - Following Stormlord

Enforcer reached into his pack, pulling out a second pistol. Once the pistol was checked and both pistols were reloaded, he said, "Okay, frontal assault on the base is the plan, right? StrikeForce, I will put my forcefield around the aircraft as you land on the airstrip. We charge out while Adamas provides air cover. I will lead a group toward the building where Patty Plus said the Doomsday Robot is being built. Any Objections?"

Enforcer paused, since there were no objections, "Okay Lock and Load everyone. Keep your head on a swivel!"

StrikeForce said “as the pilot I will be last out of the aircraft. As the team charges ahead with Enforcer, I will bring up the rear, looking around to ensure that no one is attacking our rear.”

Powercell watched as the other New Crusaders failed to respond to StrikeForce's and Enforcer's plan. "We could fake a plane crash. This would give us a day or two to recover and perform surveillance, since it appears not everyone is ready for a full-on assault", the reformed supervillain said.

"I don't know if a plane crash, fake or otherwise, would have an impact on how the inhabitants react. Good security protocols would require a reaction, regardless." Erdbeben replied.

"I think we should just hit the robot factory and, in so doing, remove half of the threat on the island." He finished his comment by raising his eyebrows and asking, "Thoughts?".

Patty said, "As for pretending we've crashed, I'm not in favor of that since we've already had fireworks on the way in. They know we're here."

Blizzard said, "Two in favor for the assault. I know that Enforcer and Patty Plus will attack the building where the Doomsday Robot is being built. I will stay and protect the aircraft. What other targets will the rest of you attack?

Closing the hatch he used to board the plane, Adamas said, "I could use a few minutes to prepare for an extended battle... I'm looking for Annihilator, but he's bested me once, and I'm not looking to get into an extended battle without being ready for it."

Likewise, Erdbeben will take as much rest as possible before the next skirmish begins.

Deny let his head back summoning M.I.S.H.A. while intending to listen to the song he recalled.

Hitting his PLAY button there came the initial beat of the song that quickly dove into a deep and quick low down to stop.

<<????>>

"What the...?"

Looking at his Sony Walkman Demy caught red battery light faded to black.

"OH, COME ON, MAN! SERIOUSLY?!

Not cool, YO!" At no one in particular...

"OK, yeah man, it's ON!

            I'M READY TO HIT THESE GUYS!"

<<DELICIOUS ANTICIPATION>>>

He went back to preparing M.I.S.H.A.s presence on the landing platform ready to jump out and charge any target that comes by land, attack with canon if by air, or defend at a distance out and start patrolling in a widening circular pattern around the craft.

Patty tilted her head until her neck popped in that oh-so-satisfying way.

"Hey, I'm ALL ABOUT a frontal assault on the robot factory, it's what I've been recommending anyway to choose the fight's location instead of just reacting. Even if it goes pear-shaped, knocking out the Doomsday bot thingy is worth doing."

She cracked her knuckles.

"And a good plan is always better than a perfect plan that never comes together."

The Black Orchid chimed in "I agree with Patty. Hitting the robot manufacturing area will probably draw them out like flies. I do recommend we hold a few of us in reserve and keep an eye out for a magical attack as well. If the good doctor is right, and there is a concentration of magic here, our greatest threat will probably come from that angle."

"Now, about Adamas...Wait a moment..." The Black Orchid could tell Adamas was looking more exhausted than she'd seen him before, then she thought about Demy's dead batteries. "Recharge batteries... Physical energy, electrical energy... what flows in one direction can flow in another..." Then she looked at her hands and the power that could emanate from them. "Yes, I think that could work."

The Black Orchid’s mind started racing about how she could cobble together a "Revitalization Ray."

"Demy, I need your Walkman's batteries! Patty, can you get me the emergency defibrillator? Erdbeben, I'm going to need a little help on the biology side. Enforcer is there a basic repair kit on this vehicle? Strikeforce, be ready to call Adamas over here. I've got an idea. They may think we've depleted our resources, but I think we can keep the pressure up."

"If Dr. Wildman were here, he might be able to figure out a way to tap into this magical energy as well' But that might have to wait."

Blizzard replied, “but the batteries are dead.”

“The batteries are the inspiration! They’re out of power much like Adamas is out of power.” Black Orchid replied.

Hearing Orchid's call to action, Demy's hand twitches, slaps, and fumbles for his Walkman in his lap as he's leaning back eyes white and "looking" at the up as he continues his summoning.

The Walkman taps Orchid’s thigh, "They're all yours....", referring to the two (2) AA batteries it uses, "Knock 'em dead, kid..." he mumbles and appearing barely conscious.

Patty finds the defibrillator in the First Aid compartment and pulls it out.

"Yeah, this is getting scary enough we probably will need this before everything's said and done. Good thinking ahead, that's why you're the boss!"

The Black Orchid constructed a device allowing her to use her Vacuum blast on herself or another willing person. Instead of losing the energy, the energy is funneled into a "battery" which can then be transferred to any willing participant. She was able to create the device, but it was limited by the receiver’s endurance and recovery ability. The device only held 5 charges. After it used all 5 times it would be worthless. Black Orchid used it on Adamas, Erdbeben, Blizzard, and Powercell

{INVENTION: Healing Device; 5 healings per use (27.5); Gear (-5),Chrg=4, Reduced Chrg (-7.5); Rng=T; Modifier: Energy Recharge Double (0) 2x healing rate for power points per use; 2-Handed Gear (-2.5)}

{Adamas gained 39 Power Points, Erdbeben gained 30 Power Points, Blizzard gained 20 Power Points, and Powercell gained 32 Power Points}

“There we should be good to go”. Black Orchid said.

At the Island where Dr. Wildman has followed Stormlord

            Willam could sense the intertwining fields of magic across the island. He could see why the recently self-styled ’Dr. Apocalypse’ had chosen to reside here. The island was clearly some sort of eldritch nexus, a rare location indeed. Stonehenge and the Pyramids of Egypt were the only locations he was personally aware of, and neither of them had the potency of this place.

            Dr. Wildman concentrated to see if he could sense ’The Green’; the idiomatic title of mystical energy he drew upon as a Druid. He reached out with his senses in the hope that he might be able to bolster his enchantments if necessary. He wasn’t able find anything which will provide a boost.

            His Gull form would have little value in a lift shaft and so where once a seagull perched - now a small bat rapidly beat its wings as it descended the shaft. Acute hearing and echo location were more useful tools here.

            Dr. Wildman pursued his quarry stealthily to see what Stormlord is up to and prepared to respond to what unfolds as any survival expert naturally does.

            He followed Stormlord in the limestone cave. It had been formed by the eroding effect of the underground streams that flow through the cave. He is led through large tilting tunnels, filled with stalactites and stalagmites into the bowels of the Earth until they link up with a se one set of elevators.

            The elevator was a wire cage that led down to the lowest level of the caves. Stormlord operated the elevator. He did not see the bat following him above him as it followed him down. The elevator stopped at its lowest point approximately 150 feet below the surface. The entire cave floor was electrically illuminated.

            In the middle of the cave is a large platform. Dr. Wildman scans to see who is sitting in the command seat. It is Dr. Apocalypse. {Dr. Pietro Apoucalos from Quest Issue 1; became Dr. Apocalypse in Quest Issue 24}.

 Dr. Wildman watched as Dr. Apocalypse weaved an incantation over many crystals and orbs. Dr. Wildman realized it was a massive magical generator. It draws the latent magical powers of an individual and amplifies them into a super - powerful mind control ray capable of maintaining full control over thousands of individuals once they have been initially exposed to the spell.

            Over on the opposite side of the cave are container tubes for holding the subjects whose magical abilities will power the crystals and orbs. They are all currently occupied by the members of the oceanographic expedition and a man in a blue and black costume with gold arm bands. Dr. Wildman thought they were a type of bracer or gauntlet. With a shock the Solar Druid realized those were Star Bands. The wearer is Starbolt. {Jamey’s PC from Crusade Issues 1 to 26 and Quest Issues 32 to 53}

Their minimal, latent magical abilities are being used to test the incantation as it is being established. The five members of the oceanography team and Starbolt are in a semi-comatose state. There is magical Leyland that led from the containers into the cave wall.

            WHOMP! Dr. Wildman saw two people appear on the platform. He immediately recognized Annihilator. {Last seen in Crusade Issue 79}

He didn't recognize the other man, the teleporter. He wore garb from the region of Borneo. There were skulls on his shoulders, chest, waist, and face. The skulls on his belt were glowing with magical energy. Finally, the Solar Druid remembered who the man was when the man walked over to a few servants dressed like him. He is the Headhunter. Headhunter is a powerful mage with an ancient arcane artifact: the Head-Axe. The Head-Axe gives the wielder the power to absorb a person's powers and memories. Striking the victim with the head-axe absorbs their powers and memories into special crystal skulls. It takes more than 1 strike but with enough of them, the victim is left powerless without any memory of the attack or the attacker that robbed them of their power.

Did Headhunter steal both Starbolt's and Darkstar’s powers?

            Before the Shapeshifting Shaman could reflect on it, he was distracted by a ghost-like figure floating down into the cave. He immediately recognized Hauntress. {Last seen in Crusade Issue 14}

Stormlord joined the others. As he thought about how to approach closer, he noticed a bright light coming from the tunnel on the opposite side of the cave from where he came in. The light was as bright as a star. From within the glowing light Dr. Wildman could see the faint form of a man. As the glow moved closer to the platform the light diminished until Dr. Wildman could see the individual. He was sure his eyes were playing tricks on him. The man was wearing the costume of Skyhawk. But how was that possible? Skyhawk was one of the Fallen Heroes of the Battle of Stonehenge during the Domain Invasion. {Crossover Issues 1 to 13. He had been caught in a tank explosion and disintegrated or so the world had thought}.

Now how was Dr. Wildman going to get the Cowl of Storms back from Stormlord? {Crusade Issue 56} Even though the Cowl of Storms had transformed into the StormScepter, Dr. Wildman knew it instantly. {This arcane artifact transforms to best reflect its wielder’s personality. It was StormBlade with the hero Excalibur, Cowl of Storms with Dr. Wildman, and now StormScepter with Stormlord. You can its history as explained by Dr. Wildman in Issue 88}

             As the Solar Druid focused on his problem, Stormlord spoke to Dr. Apocalypse. “The thunderstorms should be covering the island soon. The electrical activity should scramble Cyberdoom’s sensors he has placed along the coasts and inland. Are you sure the New Crusaders will be smart enough to take advantage of it”.

            “I am sure” was the Sorcerer Supreme’s response.

            “Now I must provide a little misdirection myself”.  As he said this, he waved hand at a giant view screen. On the screen came the imagine of Cyberdoom. {First Issue Codename: Redhawk Issue 1, First Appearance in Quest Issue 43 Red Hawk Special Issue, and Last Appearance Crusade Issue 62}

Dr. Apocalypse spoke with sarcasm in his voice, “Greetings, how goes the creation of your robotic army? I hope the setback caused by New Crusaders when they destroyed your doomsday robot hasn't put you too far behind schedule.

            “Ha! As if you care.” Cyberdoom said with equal sarcasm,” It was a major setback when your minion allows my supply of parts to be stolen when the New Crusaders raided your building! “

            Dr. Wildman was shocked by the animosity he heard in both of their voices.

            {GM note: this situation is exactly like the Marvel Super-Villain Team-Up comic books or the Death of Captain America Graphic Novel where Villains team up to defeat a stronger opponent but don’t have a common goal and considers themselves superior and their partners beneath them.}

            “Destroyers’ HQ doesn't belong to anyone but the Destroyers!”, Annihilator yelled back in reply. “I lead the Destroyers! I am not one of the Four! The Destroyers defeated Adamas twice! {Crusade Issues 15 to 17 & 73 to 79} Unlike you who ran away as fast as his jet boots would take him! {Crusade Issues 61 to 65} How did the New Crusaders know that the Destroyers were involved at all? If it wasn’t your robot and androids, then who was it?” {Crusade Issues 67 to 69}

            “How dare you speak to me that way, Alien! Don’t look so shocked! I know where you come from. Earth is not the backwater planet you think it is, especially Russia, the greatest country on this or any other planet!” Cyberdoom replied. “You owe me my parts. Now I would suggest you hurry and retrieve them now!”

            “You scream as if you have any power. Your power is as fake as the mechanical army you command. Yes, I do owe you payment for what you have cost me! In turn I will show you what true power is!” Annihilator said as he flew at top speed out of the cave.

            Dr. Apocalypse’s laughter filled the cave. “Cyberdoom, once again your arrogance will be your undoing. You might hide in your underwater base, but you will be useless there, robotic puppet master, because Annihilator will cut your electronic strings as he destroys all your communications arrays and sensor devices installed on the surface of MY island. I hope the AI you built into your robotic servants can defend themselves without your guidance.”

            The screen went dark before Cyberdoom could utter anything other than a scream in frustration.

Over the abandoned military base

“Hold off exiting the plane, Adamas” StrikeForce said. “I think I found us some cover” He pointed to the storm clouds ahead. “Black Orchid, what do you think?”

Black Orchid studied the clouds. She agreed they would work to cover. Quickly a plan formed in her mind. StrikeForce flew the plane into the thunderstorm. He flew in a path that kept them in the storm clouds until they reached the abandoned military base. Black Orchid created a Darkness Shape exactly like the plane. She flew it in the other direction of the plane. “Let’s see them track multiple bogeys”.

After Adamas exited the hatch, Enforcer surrounded the plane with his shield. Adamas flew next to the plane.

Adamas saw in the far distance near what appeared to be a tracking station site of some kind. Annihilator is flying toward it. He was flying fast toward it. Two 9 ft tall Cyberions exited the building and launched themselves into the sky by firing rocket thrusters from their feet. It appeared that the two Cyberions are attempting to intercept Annihilator. {Cyberions last seen in Crusade Issues 59 to 65}

Black Orchid was exhausted from creating and managing her shadow bogeys. She used her Revitalization device on herself. Since all the charges were used up, she put the device in a storage compartment.

{Black Orchid gained 80 Power Points}

StrikeForce landed the plane in the area next to the building where the Doomsday Robot was being built. StrikeForce as the pilot planned to be the last out of the aircraft.

Patty charged right in with Enforcer. She's kind of got a crush on his let's lock and load and go attitude. Powercell was behind them. The three of them charged through the building door. There they found 8 Androids. They were assemblers and unarmed with weapons. They faced the New Crusaders prepared to fight with their tools. {Building G on map. Their tools are the equivalent to Large Clubs from the Standard Weapons chart}

M.I.S.H.A jumped out and started to defend at a distance out and started patrolling in a widening circular pattern around the craft. M.I.S.H.A. saw four androids running into the building on the opposite side of that Enforcer, Patty, and Powercell had gone. {Building H on map}

Blizzard climbed on top of the plane, ready to defend it from harm if it is attacked.

StrikeForce planned to be the last one out of the plane but Erdbeben, Black Orchid, and Rubicon didn’t exit. They stayed inside the plane. He wasn’t sure why they had stayed on the plane, but he couldn’t stay with them. As half of the team charged ahead with Enforcer, he had to bring up the rear. As he exited, he looked around to ensure that no one was attacking their rear. He engaged his senses to help him keep track of any potential threats. He equipped his escrima sticks ready to engage. StrikeForce saw that a Cyberion was charging toward them from the direction of the Docks. {Above Buildings E and F on map}

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Just to clarify, The Black Widow no CPs to allocate based on last issue, correct (0 remaining)?

Marc

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tom, the aircraft has VTOL capabilities, correct?! StrikeForce as the pilot will be last out of the aircraft. If the team charges ahead with Enforcer, he will bring up the rear, looking around to ensure that no one is attacking our rear. He will engage his senses to help him keep track of any potential threats. If the team takes a defensive position after exiting the aircraft, he will fall in behind Enforcer, also using his senses to detect any potential threats. Either option will also see him equipping his escrima sticks ready to engage.

As for now he will hold onto his points.

Jamey

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Marc, correct Black Orchid has no CPs to use for advancement but now has 14 IP to use at anytime.

Jamey, correct the aircraft has VTOL capability.

Tom

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thanks Tom. I thought so, it should make it easier for StrikeForce to land the aircraft. The Enforcers shields and Adamas flying cover should really help as well.

Man, I had no idea I was soo low on Power Points... Adamas needs a quick recharge... anyone have any electrolytes.

"I could use a few minutes to prepare for an extended battle... I'm looking for Annihilator, but he's bested me once, and I'm not looking to get into an extended battle without being ready for it."

Adamas will land close to the Robot Factory and begin a short rest... just looking around.  I don't think his heightened vision/senses use any power.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As usual, I am the (way) tardy one.

The Black Orchid chimes in "I agree with Patty. Hitting the robot manufacturing area will probably draw them out like flies. I do recommend we hold a few of us in reserve and keep an eye out for a magical attack as well. I would like to have The Black Orchid use some inventing points to cobble together a "Revitalization Ray"

The basic idea is that The Black Orchid will construct a Device allowing her to use her Vacuum blast on herself (or another willing person, although she would never ask that of anyone else). Instead of just losing the Power Points, however, they are funneled into a "battery" which can then be transferred to any willing participant. I'm thinking a 30-50 PP transfer to Adamas will keep him in the fight a lot longer. I think she would probably know if this will work or not before trying it. Also if the tempo of the battle is such that this is not needed, she may still try to invent it for this battle but not use it immediately.

[OOC: needing the batteries is just something they would do in the comics for dramatic effect. I'm not sure how they would really help. See: https://www.quotes.net/mquote/1193948]

Dr. Wildman is not there.

Demy's Walkman batteries are dead.

Do you want to ask for something else?

The batteries are the inspiration! They’re out of power much like Adamas is out of power.

I think I'm more excited about this next issue than normal.

Greg

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am glad Greg. This issue is taking longer than usual as all of you threw me a curve ball or 3. I am trying to sort it all out and put the issue together without taking away too much player agency.

Thanks for your patience.

Tom

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tom,

No worries on my end. You have a lot of players and have had a lot of moving parts to deal with the past few issues.

I just appreciate you doing it at all!

Best,

Shane
